Great idea Joey đź‘Ť. It will be fun to put some more personality to the members of GTP. What special connection does a Mini Cooper have to GTP?

I think we should get a selection of cheap cars for GTP to vote for. I know what I would vote for :D. Maybe make the restriction as FF and below 200bhp.

Most of the time a wheel is faster then a pad, and if I would have let one use the controller of their choice people would be complaining it was unfair. Either way you can't win.
Lets look at this another way (Thanks for the idea Thatman) if a celeb turns up and it's wet, they can't win either, but they still get to drive the car to the best of their ability. On TG, why isn't everyone forced to drive in the wet?

There are some users who use automatic gears in GT. Are you going to force everyone to drive in auto? Manual users have an unfair advantage in the same way that wheel users do.

I'm sure it says "discussion" thread up there. This is a great idea, but you do seem to be making big decisions with not much, if any, consultation.

The thing that sacres me is that in this track list video from the game, the Top Gear track is not listed at all. I see over 70 other tracks but not the top gear track.
I haven't owned any GT's before though so maybe I'm just not understanding it correctly.

I worried that PD did something bad. I mean the stig challenge is gone/replaced, i hope the track is still drivable in arcade mode and not just with Samba buses.

I think we shouldn't forget that this isn't meant to be a strict racing league; this is GTP fun! We shouldn't be locked down to using a controller or Auto gears, this is for fun!

Keep in mind also that some people who use a wheel have gotten so used to it that they can barely drive with a pad now. I know 2 people who used to drive the wheels off the cars using a pad but after 2 years using a wheel they can not even come close to holding a line with a pad so it would place a huge disadvantage on people in that group.

Personally I can drive either way though I find it harder to drive with the DS controller than with the others I use. On Forza I find that I am slightly faster on some tracks with a wheel and slightly faster on others with the controller yet most of my friends who use a wheel very well would get smoked if they were forced to go back to the controller.

Obviously the Top Gear Test Track has to be unlocked. đź’ˇ

GTP's Star in a Reasonably Priced Car

Format:
Each week a member will be selected for an interview and to take a lap of the Top Gear Test Track in GT5. The lap will be recorded and submitted to me via some file format that I can read. I will then post the video to YouTube and post a text based interview. A leader board will be kept up as well as an archival thread.

Guests:
Guests will be chosen based on many criteria, more well known members will probably get first dibs, but leaders of WRS's, photomode comps, tuning garages are another focus I'd really like to have too. The first guest has been chosen, and all I will tell you is that is he is a long term member who lives where the weather is epic.

You will have to willing to share some information about yourself, if you are uncomfortable doing so this probably isn't the best thing for you. If you are selected you can decline the interview and you will have no backlash from myself. Privacy is something I'd like to respect.

Date:
The segments will be released on Sunday at some point throughout the day, probably around 9-10pm EST.

Car:
The car has been decided and confirmed as premium content for the game. It has been unveiled to premium users but won't be fully revealed till after the game's release.

I can tell you that it's FWD though and has a special connection to GTP...and it's not a MINI Cooper. Oh and it's red.

How Does The Lap It Work:
The car will be ran with out any assists, on N2 tires, manual transmission and in cockpit view. Users will also have to use the gamepad during the segment, no wheels will be allowed to keep it fair for everyone. You my however setup the gamepad however you like for the run.

Each person gets 5 practise laps in the car and one timed run that will count towards the leaderboard. Corner cutting will be discouraged. If you spin out on your timed lap, then you spin out. You will not get a do over.

If you are found to be cheating you will be put on the List of Shame, you will however be protected by the AUP. No personal attacks will be made against you, you'll just be black listed.

Special Notes:
This is not really a competition, it's more of a way to get to know your fellow forum members. My goal is to connect the members to the game.

Original post from 17 December 2007

This is an idea I threw around a couple weeks ago in a dead thread.

Since we all know that the Top Gear track is going to be included in GT5 I was wondering how the forum would feel about running our own Star in a Reasonably Price Car. Each week we could have a small interview of a couple questions that's posted and if we have the ability to save our replays and host them online, a video of the lap. So what do you guys think?

Yes I do realise this is a ways off, but it's better to get the planning stages out of the way early.

1) Leaderboard as you stated
2) Not a competition as you stated? Then why leaderboard:dunce:
If the competition only allows gamepad then take my name off the list as I'm willing to place a bet that I can't do a lap under 3 min with a pad if I can even do a clean lap.
A driving game (a real one) at least in my mind means driving a car not point and move with a controller.
If you would try a wheel with a "real driving game" you might change your mind. The gamepad deal is more of a handicap than you think.
If you're still stuck on a gamepad then make it only the pad that comes with the PS3, because I'm sure some gamepads are better than others:sly:đź’ˇ
Also what is the reason for "in-car" view only. That view is bad in GT5P not sure what it'll be like in GT5.

I have to agree with the last part. I would like to use my wheel; I could never go back to using a pad.. I may not even get chosen, but I think many will be put off if you go for gamepad only. and the car better be a Fiat 500! Or a Citroen C4 ;)

The idea is just great! But i guess for a fun competition some of the restrictions are really not necessary.
There were rumours at some point that it will be possible to upload replays to YouTube. That would make it pretty easy to share (and verify) each weeks lap. Has that feature been confirmed yet?

No, it's not "completely" confirmed yet.

I think most people here own a steering wheel, don't they?

I suggest you to make another poll to decide this thing about steering wheels, camera view and stuff. Keep in mind that if you allow only cockpit view, Standard cars can't be used.

Nothing is going to be 100% fair, as I've stated I drive with a pad, in chase cam, with assists and an automatics transmission, yet it's going to be pretty much the opposite for that.

It's supposed to be the exact same setup for everyone so the times are all under the same conditions. Plus if you get a bad time it's not like you are really competing. However, since I see no productive discussion will take place unless it's changed I'll go ahead and let you use whatever controller you want but there will be two lists.

Maybe we should do what Top Gear does when someone drives in the wet. Put (Pad) or (DS3) next to the people's times who didn't use a wheel, instead of having two lists. Because the people who mainly use a pad will have a decent time because they are used to that setup, and the wheel users the same. It would probably end up being more fair that way

This is a fantastic idea, I've always thought about becoming a premium member may his is the right time do so.

+3 You have very good point.đź‘Ť

I agree as well. Let people use what they are used to. If it's just for fun, don't force them. If the leaderboard doesn't matter so much, why ban wheels? Making rules just for the sake of it?

Rules are there for consistency. If you just let people use whatever then there would be no point in a leaderboard and it would just be an interview thread.

Consistency as in handicapping the wheel users? Sorry, you can't expect me to be anywhere near as good with a controller as a wheel. I speak for many on this, which means your leaderboard is no longer consistent.

Perhaps you should read through the thread again.

Really it doesn't matter if you are good or bad, if you think getting the top time is the point to this then you're doing it wrong. Skills level is meaningless here, the lap is just some way to bridge the members to the game in a fun format. However it seem like a handful of members want to suck the life out of the even before it begins :indiff:.

And please don't speak for others, they have a voice and they are free to use it.

One thing should be certain, and that is the car should be FWD.

ps. we have similar screen names.

This sounds like a great Idea and I wish I had run across it earlier. That there in lies the problem. This needs a new thread or sub section with rights to you so you can lock the thread (Yes or no) but still It needs to be some place where it can be found.
If you cant find a home for this let me know, We might be able to work something out. PM me Im always lurking around

Will you ever reveal What car this is going to be?

He will unveil it when puts the first "episode" up(which should be sometime soon as the first person has supposedly just submitted his lap).

I won't spoil the fun for those that don't want to know so I'll put a clue in spoiler tags.

It has 4 wheels

...This needs a new thread or sub section ...

I tried posting a new thread (complete with car suggestion!) and the thread was quickly locked and I got scolded for not searching...

I am not as interested in interviews, but more as a standard benchmarking of skill.

For the record, I suggest the Suzuki Swift Sport '07, $16,300 from the dealer. 123 hp, FF, similar to the SX4 used in Top Gear USA, no good analog for the Kia Cee'd they are using in TGUK right now.

I would say either no mods, or just the chassis reinforcement (on the show the car has a cage installed, which would reinforce things).

The car has been picked and the first person has ran the course. I'll process the video and do the questions tonight-ish. First segment should be up Sunday.
