There was a news thing yesterday saying that the Police Force here has bought some Mini Coopers, and they showed some camera footage of them...They look small, compared the Commodores and Falcons...;)

i wouldn't say that. anything with more than two inches of rubber can't qualify as a cool wheel :D

I believe he is refering to the WHEELS, not the tires (:

"Back in the day" the Texas Highway Patrol used to use 5 Liter Mustangs. All the US Goverment institutions use American vehicles - I think it's required but I honestly don't know. Can anyone verify?

But back to Italy, do none of the Italian manufacturers make something in that class of car? Well, nothing worth having anyway ... it's quite odd that they'd go to Japan to supply goverment vehicles.

They do run Alfas and Fiats, but from the articles I've read Italian cars in the sizes they need (i.e. the Legacy) just don't have the speed or handling.

Given GM's involvement in Fiat and Subaru, there is a tenuous corporate link, but whether there's anything to that I don't know, I'm probably drawing a long bow there).

They're using Imprezas and Foresters as well.

Well you need a car that is fit for almost any condition. You dont want a small, light car or the guy your chasing can push you out of the way.
You dont want too big of a car or it can be just to troubling.
Not too fast but not slow either
Has to have power, considerable amount
suspension, sometimes you go offroad
better breaks

lots of factors, also matters where they are at (desert, snowy, etc)...

American government organisations do not need US-produced vehicles. Chicago, Denver, and New Orleans each owned several Toyota Priuses for city government business (probably just to be seen 'conserving') and I remember Denver had several late-'80's Camrys. US Government vehicles can be anything. I've seen US Government plates on everything from new Camrys to Ford Aerostar minivans at the Smithsonian. I've never seen a non-US police car in action, though.

well yeah but so was i. you know as well as i do that the appeal of a wheel goes hand in hand with how much rubber is on it. wheels on an suv that are 22" but have 5 inches of rubber on them wont look as cool as 19" rims with 2mm of tyre heh. just like women, if britney were to suddenly shave her head and be bald, it would still be the same package but she wouldn't be sexy anymore... hehe don't try to draw any more inferences from that, it was just to help me explain :D

Well, it's a police car...they aren't supposed to be all Razzle Dazzle.

I saw on patrol a few years back here in the uk a Porsche 968 with blue lights etc they also had a Lotus Esprit as well:lol: . They were more for show than go though although as I said I did see the porker waiting to nick some poor speeder.

the highway patrol here in cali uses BMW motorcycles and police use harleys...i;ve also seen CHP in Volvos... and when i went up to Colorado i saw a cop car.... it was a SAAB...

here in the good old RS of A, the hiway cops use 328is and 540is - the previous models that is

Ive noticed one or two impreza wrx sti models running about on the motorway, must be used for high speed chases or something, there the frog eyed model, i couldnt beleive it when i saw it, normally i see astras, omegas and vectras. The subaru sure was a shock, no more speeding around this area i tell ya.

On TV one night a few years back there was one of these fly-on-the-wall type shows on the traffic police and they used all sorts of cars. 2 of the detectives used to dress in plain clothes, sweater n baseball caps etc.... and drive around in a black Sierra RS Cosworth waiting for people to race them and nick them...

Cops use literally anything these days watch out.
:mischievous:

They did (do?) but they replaced the standard WRX speedo gear with their own custom stuff. Apparently it wasn't designed for AWD correctly and as a result the speeds recorded were off. There was a big shindig about it and the government had to pay back a bunch of fines.
I can't recall whether they're back on Highway patrol duty or have been relagated. The standard NSW cars car falcons and commodores and they're in the middle of being replaced with newer versions. I suspect that the WRX will go out with them. Also, Victorian state police also used WRXs at some stage, but always as undercover cop cars. Not sure on the status of them, either they were all pre-MY01 models, too.

I Think the Italy Police should, drive TVR`s Ferraris and the 1000BHP Bughatti. Also i bet soon the UK Police will drive Lotus Jagaurs TVR`S and Aston Matin`s also, a Ford Costworth or Focus RS would be great for them.

If you're referring to the Skylines, 300Z's, and 3000 GT's; they only use those for high speed chases on the Wangan.

I'm surprised they chose the Legacy, and Station Wagon versions nonetheless, do they need the extra room so much I wonder?
Imprezas, even station wagons, are more expensive yes, but definitely worth the extra dough.
I'd like to see some Lamborghini cop cars like in 'NFS High Stakes'. :D

IIRC The UK cops have a bunch of evos as 'hero' cars.
