AUTHORITIES in Alabama say a gunman has opened fire in a hospital, wounding an officer and two employees before being fatally shot by police.

Birmingham Sergeant Johnny Williams says the officer and employees suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Mr Williams says police were called because a man with a gun was walking through St Vincent's Hospital overnight.

When he was confronted by officers, he started shooting and wounded one of them. That's when the second officer shot and killed the man.

Detectives are still working to determine why the armed man was in the hospital.

ANOTHER shooting? Can't this all just stop? 👎:yuck:

I'm in no way for guns being banned (blame the person, not the weapon), but these incidents are happening more and more. Unless they are just getting more publicity, of course.

Guns should be harder to get thats a start.

Can't you get Handguns, Shotguns, Automatic Rifles, Crossbows, Longbows, Body Armour in a gunshop?

Highly publicized violence generally leads to more violence. Many are inspired by the carnage and media coverage.

Depends*, Yes*, No, Depends, Yes, Depends.

*After a background check and waiting period. Assuming you are not a felon, minor, or mentally unstable.

Correction, diagnosed mentally unstable. There's every chance there could be something that nobody had picked up on before, which may or may not lead to a tragedy.

But what is with the shooting? A copycat incident, capitalising on the infamy?

Nobody died and the perp got a bullet in the brain. Good ending.

Is there a mental screening done?

Actually, the man involved in the Connecticut shooting was pre-screened before attempting to purchase guns, but was denied access because they believed he was mentally unstable. He then proceeded to use guns purchased by his mother at a prior time.

Now where could one get a bunch of box-cutters and a couple of fully-fuelled jets?
Guess one could start with the box-cutters from Wal-Mart.

I think it's not what we can get . . . but what we do with it is what matters in the end.

Alarming incident for sure, but I also think it's more heightened awareness by the public, and also on gtplanet.

I hope the officer gets well soon, and glad that only person who was killed was the bad guy.

Mostly unrelated, but big news here in Oregon before the Clackamas Town Center Shooting was a eleven & seven year old attempted armed carjacking.

I think they said that kid took the handgun from the ex-con father, who was legally prohibited from possessing a firearm. Second part of this story had this idiot of a dad greeting the police officers with profanity & baseball bat. He was hauled to jail.

No Walmart around where I live carry firearms, except one.

It's still the most affordable place to buy ammunition however.

Are guns not illegal to own by people except cops in japan?
There are extremely limited number of hunting (long)guns issued in Japan, but they are pretty much non-existent. Outside that, it's just the authorities, military & outlaws who have guns.

I take it sports like shooting are also count as a reason to have one.

I've never even heard of that one, but I know that they have shooting teams, so I guess they must.

Unless the teams consist of police & military members.

And nobody really uses them that much, by the looks of things.
Absolutely true. I even noted somewhere that average citizen will never even see a firearm that wasn't on the hip of a police officer.

I've always supported gun ban in Japan, where after living in the States for many years, I've come to the conclusion that effective gun ban is pretty much a delusion in the U.S.

Culturally, Japanese public never needed firearms. It is also difficult to smuggle firearms into the country, and impossible to manufacturer them illegally there.

In the U.S., firearms has been around since the birth of the nation. People protected not only the nation, but also themselves & their family with firearms. Smugglers are very active along the borders of this country, and there will be people who will have relatively easy time manufacturing firearms secretly.

It doesn't get anymore apples & oranges than gun control in Japan & the U.S.

Japan being a technological country may end up seeing guns, but they will be made from plastic.

Bullets on the other hand are another question.
