White smoke risen at 7.06pm...

From www.dw.de

White smoke has been seen emerging from the Sistine Chapel chimney in Rome. The traditional signal that a new pope has been chosen officially marks the end of the election process for the Church's 266th leader.

White smoke was seen billowing from the Sistine Chapel's chimney at just after 7 p.m local time, marking the end of an historic papal electoral process to replace Benedict XVI, who announced his desire to stand down in February.

The smoke, produced by mixing the smoke from burning ballots with special flares, signifies one cardinal has received the required two-third majority, or 77-votes, needed to become the new head of the Roman Catholic Church.

After accepting the position, the 266th leader of the Church's 1.2 billion followers will shortly be dressed for the first time in papal clothes before making his way to Saint Peter's Basilica where he his identity will first become known.

Between 30 minutes and one hour will pass between the white smoke appearing, the ringing of the Basilica's bells and the new pope making his appearance on the central balcony of the church where he will address those gathered in the square and television audiences.

It`s the Argentinian canditate.
From Latin America, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76 years old, born 17th of December 1936, Buenos Aires

Now Pope Francesco I. / Francis I. / Franziskus I.

I learned: Because there is no other Francis yet you don`t use the extension I. - He will be called Francis I. when there is a second one in the future to make clear which one you mean.

Tom Pope already plays for Port Vale.

He'll have his work cut out commuting from the Vatican.

^^^

I would like to take his papamobile for a ride. Guess Surely it`s a Mercedes-Benz.
And I bet nobody with hybrid knowledge can build it.

Why so much care over this topic? It's all over my news feeds, the media is abuzz with updates.

They should make the new chosen one abseil down from the chimney. Pope on a rope would be great to see 👍

I've been through this three times now . . . and the world has changed a lot before my eyes.. . .

But I had a similar thought last time about the ages of these Popes.

Edit: He's about to speak. Doesn't look old, though - very energetic.

The devil made you do it? ;)

Well, he looks pretty kick-ass for now - so I'm hoping he's going to make some positive impact.

Your birthdate is listed as April, so it'd be four - John Paul and John Paul II in 1978, Benedict in 2005 and now Francis.

Incidentally, this isn't the first time an Argentinian has been gifted by the Hand of God.

It's nice to see a Pope not from Europe, specifically Italy, but many of his views are rather extreme when it comes to homosexuality. I don't expect the Pope to say that the Catholic Church supports homosexuality but as Cardinal Bergoglio he was more or less related to having views that were "medieval".

His views on the Eucharist are kind of interesting though, he says there are a bunch of people not worthy to receive it. That doesn't really seem to follow in the path of Jesus since he befriended people who were considered unworthy of anything.

He does support the use of condoms to prevent disease though, which may help slow down the HIV epidemic in Africa, so I guess that's something.

I see him attempting to do some good for the poverty in Latin America too, but like anything, time will tell.
