I tuned in to the live feed about a minute before the smoke appeared, couldn't tell if it was really white, partly cause I wasn't expecting a Pope to be elected after only two days.

It`s the Argentinian canditate.
From Latin America, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76 years old, born 17th of December 1936, Buenos Aires

Now Pope Francesco I. / Francis I. / Franziskus I.
Why did they change his name?

Why so much care over this topic? It's all over my news feeds, the media is abuzz with updates.

Well, he`s (definitely no she) only the leader of the Church's 1.2 billion followers.
I don't know anybody who actually follows it. As far as I can tell they just go to church on Sundays to hang out with friends or whatever.

I thought he was going to be the new pope...

Since his boss decided to return to the Dark Side...

Because saying pope Francis is easier than saying Berg-go-ogg-lio.

Not that Hard for people that have spanish as native language :sly:

Still, his new name is odd... But hey! If church needs that much of a change... 💡

Incidentally, this isn't the first time an Argentinian has been gifted by the Hand of God.

Indeed:

Lock up your children, new pope in town!!

Lock up your daughter
Lock up your wife
Lock up your back door
Run for your life
The man is back in town
So don't you mess around....

Not the reformist that many were expecting but a wise choice after all. Protestantism is galloping wildly on one of the most catholic places on earth, a latin american pope might help the church to get their message across the region more efficiently.

EDIT: Oh yeah, perhaps he can surpass Don Diego and claim the title of most sacred holyness in Argentina.

Why did they change his name?

It is traditional for a pope to have a different name. The new name is supposed to give some sort of idea of the way the new pope intends to run the church.

If everyone in Argentina cared more about someone's actions outside of the pitch, Messi would already be the new holyness. He is mine, already. :D

I wanted the Ghanaian guy... :(

He looked like such a fun dude, like the guy from the Red Stripe commercials.

A new Pope always chooses a regnal name of his own, which may (and commonly does) bear no relation to his actual name. It's usually for symbolic reasons - to reflect people they wish to honour or emulate. Some say that Benedict XVI chose his name because Benedict XV had a reign that lasted less than 8 years and he always intended his own to do the same.

Take the last few...

Jorge -> Francis I
Joseph -> Benedict XVI
Karol -> John Paul II
Albino -> John Paul I
Giovanni -> Paul VI
Angelo -> John XXIII
Eugenio -> Pius XII

Or visit some historical Popes, like Rodrigo Borgia (Alexander VI).

Just about every Pope since the 10th Century has chosen a papal name different from their own "baptismal" name.

That and it makes them more Pope-ular...

I guess there's not going to be a Pius XIII then.

I'm 25 and I've seen Diego's matches in his late years, watched tons of clips of his matches as well, since my father is a great fan of the man. I'd dare to say that he was indeed a bit more 'special' or dare I say more exuberant to watch than Messi, but not even closely as effective.

Diego was a Longbowman, very interesting, classic and lethal in his age, Messi is a rifle, better in nearly every single measurable way, bar the milonga. But I digress.

Looks like Francesco is a tough pope, he's open to discussing some taboos but still very conservative and willing to recover the church's historical values and how they convey to the people.

Evidently, the cardinals felt that "must be able to deal with sexual abuse scandals" was a higher priority for the new pope than "should bear a passing resemblance to a guy from a beer commercial".

That sounds like the kind of stupid urban legend that gets invented by people reading far too much into things.

As far as I'm aware, the only pope to have chosen his name primarily because it was a predecessor's name, was John Paul II - and that was because the first John Paul died after a month.

Who can say? All we know is he chose the name in honour of his predecessor and, for the first time in umpty centuries, voluntarily stood down to end his papacy early - his tenure closely following that predecessor's.

Papal regnal names are always chosen for the symbolism of the name. If it's the name of a predecessor Pope it's for reasons of honouring that predecessor - either through name or deed. JP2 did so for the former reason.

JP1 chose his name to honour two people who'd helped him to the papacy - John XXIII (Angelo) and Paul VI (Giovanni) - rather than for any "by deed" reasons, as he sought to move the Church towards more human roots that those two predecessors (JP1 refused to be crowned - John 23 was the last to use the full papal coronation while Paul 6 had a shorter coronation - and no Pope since has been crowned.

Benedict chose XVI as a direct reference to the WW1 Pope Benedict XV. He wasn't quite in a position to match him by deed - 15 tried to solve WW1 peaceably - but nevertheless aspired to the tone of his papacy. Made all the more symbolic by his own membership of Hitlerjugend in WW2.
