Handling complaints due to default tunes

So...

We have a big divide of those who say the handling is 'broken' and floaty and all that, and the other side that says the handling is great and working fine.

There are many comments in the 'disappointent' and 'praise' threads, but no specific topic:

I believe all of the issues are down to the default tunes of the cars. As many who've actually got into the tuning have found, the lag and 'soft' handling can be completely removed with a bit of tuning. Unfortunately most of us have no proper idea of what exaclty we are affecting when messing with the tuning, so won't be able to fix it ourselves and leads to frustration. That and in the races that provide a car you can't tune it anyway.

It seems to be down to two things: the suspension setup is way too soft. The diff is set to no slip at all.

It's been proven in the telemetry that the game is receiving steering inputs practically instantaneously, but is being delayed from there.

Who else here thinks that if they just redid all of the tunes on the cars with the patch to be tighter a lot of the complaints would go away?

From the modders who have pulled apart the physics files already, they have found there is a bit of incorrect data here and there, especially with added downforce, so hopefully that will be cleaned up too. Otherwise the physics engine underneath seems very much an advancement on everything else.

I've had the game for a couple of days now, had my first proper long session on it last night.

I was cursing about the handling (or lack of it) for a long time - then I started tuning....its a night & day difference.

Instead of driving a sofa around a track, with a little tuning to the suspension, you can drive something that actually reacts to controller input & is capable of following the racing line accurately.

I think there is still a bit of lag in there, but with tuned suspension, the game is playable & great fun to play.

PS3 - DS3 (steering assist enabled)

The default tunes are all very soft, intentionally so as we need all cars to be able to handle all tracks. This makes them sub-optimal on the flatter/less bumpy tracks. Given the almost infinite variations available for the cars defaulting a setup per car, per track, per upgrade level wasn't possible.

A few tweaks in the setup menu can make all the difference.

Well, a default setup per car, per track, per upgrade is indeed to much.

But I would expect at least for the street cars to have a setup that makes each car handle like the real ones. Talking about suspension, turning radius etc.. Those parameters should be the same as when the real car leaves the factory. That shouldnt be to much to ask.

I've found that turning steering assist on (using a controller) really helps to "steady" the handling for most cars. I have messed around with the tuning, but that was because I was getting my butt kicked on the Retro event Ebisu course!

Standard showroom cars in spec trim tend not to be taken racing that much. The suspension is 'road soft' for the lower powered cars. Turning circles are set for ease of gameplay. The steering lock is fully adjustable of course (later along with things like castor, toe and diff settings which also affect the turning circle to an extent).

Quite a few people seem to say the same thing about steering assist helping. I somehow found it the exact opposite though. Didn't like steering assist one bit.

Haven't even tried any suspension tuning yet other than ride height but I see a couple of very distinct handling characteristics between the input choices I use - DS3/HKS and a cheapo Logitech Driving Force Wireless.

With the DS3/HKS the steering inputs are very tight requiring the mastering of very small adjustments - especially without steering assist. I have tried many laps with different settings, Novice through Elite, and with/without steering assist. If you are very adapt with your thumb for control then this game can be great fun. Note: I don't get the so-called "floaty" feeling with the DS3/HKS controllers.

With my wheel, the inputs are much more granular. Much easier to stay in control BUT I get a somewhat more "disconnected", "lighter" and sometimes "floaty" feeling. I have noticed the "floaty" feeling is directly related to the steering lock setting - this wheel the max is 200 and reducing this exaggerates the floaty feeling.

For me I need a wheel as I am much more consistant and in control. I just am not fond of the disconnect feeling.

I can overlook the control deficiencies and can enjoy the game. Any patches EA could provide though would make things that much better and more approachable for those less forgiving. I believe patching would also translate to increased sales - EA you listening to everyone?
