Have just got a G29 for Christmas and need some advice

Hi all,

I have been lucky enough to get a wheel for Christmas and this is my first experience using a wheel for a racing game. I have noticed that compared to the DS4 I am a lot slower at the moment, plus I am getting quicker lap times by enabling some assists. Is this normal?

I am aware that I need to practice practice practice but does anyone have any other tips for me that has been through the same experience?

Cheers all and maybe will see some of you on the track!

You nailed it with practice practice practice, it might be useful to do the drift mileage award on a road track, once you have some practice at drifting you should be able to stop yourself spinning when not trying to drift.

The main thing is getting used to the fact that you have to put some real steering angle on to correct a slide rather than the little flick of the thumb you could get away with on the DS4. It can become quite a physical process.

As you've said, practice is the key. Turn off CSA because it's stupid and won't help you improve. You can probably dump ASM too and just stick with a bit of ABS and TCS set to 2. That should be enough to stop you spinning all the time but you'll still need to countersteer in the more lively cars and it still relies on you being smooth and accurate with your lines. When you get to a point you feel the TCS is holding you back too much out of corners, try it without.

The drifting advise is good. It certainly can prepare you for thight situations and learn the grip levels. Of course, there are numerous combos available regarding cars and tyres. How about taking the BMW M4 with medium sports tyres and have a spin! You'll learn the wheel! 👍

When I switched to a G29 I could barely get round a whole lap! A week later things are much better :) +1 for using the M4 on sport tyres :) My wheel settings are 2 for force feedback and 2 for sensitivity, I found this a great improvement over the default settings. All driving assists off except ABS.

Does the default G29 setting in terms of force feedback and sensitivity an okay base setting for a beginner who just switched over from a DS4..
* And yes, been doing practice laps with the G29, but would love to get opinions from fellow G29 users to be used as a sort of base guide.

Suggesting to check settings as 7/7/3 and start from there, lock first 7 and don't change it later, adjust only second and third values if needed, prefer to try first changing last 3 to one lower or one higher if want to change something after those settings.

* Will give that a trial run after a short rest period.

Where do you check these settings? I have heard the 7/7/3 before but don’t know where to find this?

Also am going to try the suggestion of m4 with all aids off except abs and medium sport tyres with stock tune. Will do Suzuka east and will post a couple of times to see how I compare to others. Will give me a good benchmark of where I am at compared to others.

Thing is with any wheel you’ll soon be faster without even realising. Because you can put infinitely more accurate input in there’s never ever a really perfect lap. I played with a pad until a couple of years ago and was relatively fast, I always felt like I reached a limit of how fast I could go, it doesn’t take long to get used to the wheel, just practice is the answer.

It's only available in the in race options but I would take the controller sensitivity with a salt grain because I've been a G29 user for a couple months and the first thing I was advised to do was to turn it up to 7 and I did. Well last week sometime I lowered it to default and I was instantly faster and felt I had better grip, less understeer.

It will take a little bit to get used to it. I run my wheel at..
Steering Sensitivty = 7, -2 for carts
FFB Torque = 3
FFB Sensitivity = 7

I have some arthritis it the hands and wrists. Too much torque causes pain on longer races and when you have to turn quickly. I turned it down 1 setting at a time and now 3 seems like plenty. Plus less wear on the wheel motors and gears.

I'm going through the same process with my T150. Following with interest.

I have a T300rs, love it. You will adjust in a short while. Be sure to play with the Steering Sensitivity. If you find your having to turn the wheel too much raise the number until you find what you like.

I guess this is the thread where i can ask about the 1080(?) stuff, can it be lowered? I find myself having a tough time with some of the hairpins..
Not sure if you can adjust on the G29. I know you can on my T300rs, I just have never played with it.
Turning your steering sensitivity up will also reduce the amount you have to turn the wheel.

I run my wheel at..
Steering Sensitivty = 7, -2 for carts
FFB Torque = 3
FFB Sensitivity = 7

Will keep an eye on this thread. Just got a t300rs gt and my stand is late so still using DS4.

Never had a wheel, so no idea what the different settings actually do to the experience/handling etc or where to start! Drifting sounds fun mind

^ thanks I need to change my setting, I've been missing a lot of steering and had too much in the kart.

That would make sense as you were probably turning the steering wheel the same which would be turning the wheels so much to lose front grip and get understeer. you would need to turn the steering wheel less for the same amount of front wheel turn.
Like long and short steering racks.

Set the best possible time you can do with a DS4 on time trial and save the ghost, then load it up and try to beat it with the wheel. Turning down TCS will make you quicker straight away once you get the hang of it

Here I am, using a G29 since november.
Incredibly hard for me at the beginning.. i am now confortable with that..i could never go back to DS.

Exactly the same boat I'm in TomPyke! My stand SHOULD be here tomorrow. Can't wait to practice, practice, practice! :gtpflag:

I got one for Xmas as well. First few days I was consistently 3-4 seconds slower than I was with the pad. Now I am just as fast as with the pad and a lot more consistent as my lap times are not all over the place. For some reason I am also more careful with the wheel versus the pad....maybe my mind thinks I am in a real car versus the pad is just straight up gaming.
