Carol?

Bet I'm right!

EDIT: Bah! I'm sure that merits a "D'oh!"

And a fine, upstanding gal she is, right? Compared to her sister Mia, who seems to put out for everyone...

Congratulations on the purchase. You have now officially joined the insufferably snotty clique of Mazda owners worldwide. Now all we need to do is get a rollbar on your car and get it on a racetrack...

Here's a pic of the new semi-purchased, by the way (I've only paid a deposit, as yet) all the way from ebay:

Proper pics including GTP fansign-type ones up as soon as I actually take delivery. It's known as Danger Mouse, apparently, so I'll also give it a DM sticker when I can! I'm glad it's a white one anyway, most of the NAs you see are either red or blue, with the occasional green or yellow for imported V-Spec or California editions.

I'm undecided on the alloys. They're in reasonable nick (though it definitely needs new tyres and the alignment doing), but I quite fancy putting it back on the OEM wheels and enjoying a slightly better ride, or at least wheels of the same radius as the originals. It'll also be getting a full service as I got it for a good price and can afford to splash out a bit.

Oh, and it's a UK car, not a Eunos import. At this price point there seem to be about four Eunos for every one UK car.

Nice NA8C. Looking good. That white's gonna be a horse crossed with a mule to keep clean, though.

Thanks 👍 Yeah, the white will probably be a bit of a git to keep clean but I don't do many miles anyway and this car is getting babied compared to the Fiesta. At some stage, if I can find one at the right price, I'm even going to try and get a hard-top for it, as I can imagine it'll be a little more pleasant in the winter. It's a big "if" though, as they seem very expensive. I'll see how much I have left in the budget.

The first post has been updated as a kind of summary of all the test-drives I've had and things I considered.

I just remembered when looking through the thread too that I mentioned at one stage about a "secret plan B" in this post. Now that I've not gone through with it, I can reveal it: I was seriously considering buying an old Mini, to the point where I even went to have a look at a couple, though unfortunately never got to drive one. As I live in a city and I'm not a big bloke, it made a lot more sense than you might imagine. In the end, the fact that I couldn't find a genuinely good one in my budget pushed that idea out of the window. They're expensive little buggers, those Minis...

Epic win on the NA MX5 choice. Solid cars, amazing to drive, easy to work on... The list goes on and on. I share the sentiment on the wheels, they seem a bit out-of-place on a while car. Maybe a bit too large. Couldn't be hard to find a set of OEM wheels, I'd say do it, that is, if you have the cash.

Excellent! you will not be able to baby it for long, though. As soon as you will see a nice backroad in front of you, the speed will rise with the revs. :mischievous: believe me, I know few people who own MX-5's, and they never can resist the temptation.

Congratulations H4S, excellent choice. I know you've already driven one but you will enjoy owning it, you won't be able to ignore a nice winding road. Soon you will find yourself going out of your way to detour just to have a fun drive.

So. When are you coming by next? :D

A word of advice - if you join the MX5OC, don't bother with the Tyne-Tees region. They all drive Mk3s and on a drive out on "fun" NSL roads to a meet, I was losing them unless I dropped my average speed below 40mph. Yorkshire Ridings is where it's at (they meet at Blakey Ridge from time to time :D )

Good choice HFS 👍

The wheels don't look too bad on it - aren't they NB items anyway?

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it?

I thought they were from the NB, so that confirms it. They knacker the ride a bit though so they'll probably be swapped for something smaller eventually.

Paid a smidgen over a grand for it, so I'm extra chuffed with that. It does have a few black marks in its history that I'm aware of, but none of them affect the insurance (I've checked) and the car is none the worse for wear for them either, indeed it's better than any of the other MX-5s I've viewed.

Yes, it rather looks like they've put rubber bands on them to keep the rolling radius. You might want to drop to 15s and I think a 185/50 tyre will keep you within a percent on the speedo.

We have an open house for MX-5 owners, particularly first timers. Our next (and there'll be a next) will be our fourth :D

Is this the 10th Anniversary one you're getting next? I'll definitely try and pop down again at some point as long as uni work doesn't get too heavy in the first few months.

We ought to be getting Annie (the 10AE) soon and maybe Ashley (an '03 Splash Green) also. I need to sort out Ranulph and Don too.

Oh and the rule is that if it's raining, the roof can come up.

Splash Green is an excellent colour. What are Ranulph and Don when they're not an arctic explorer and a mafia boss?

Oh, and don't worry, the roof will be down a lot...

Ford Explorer and a trailer (Don LaFontaine :D )

I need something to pull a trailer and Explorers are awesome.

Plus there's a side-bonus of the dogs going into the Explorer's boot.

I need something to pull a trailer and Explorers are awesome.

Explorers are only awesome if you're a prosecution lawyer in the States. Wouldn't something like a Landcruiser be a better proposition?

What do you mean, "if it's raining"..? You guys still live in the UK, don't you? :D

I don't want to jinx the recent weather so I'm keeping schtum.

Nono, Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins. Need a tow vehicle, get something that can PULL!

It would pull... right up to the end of the street and then not be able to get around the corner...

Well, maybe a (UK) Ranger with the diseasel would do better. Anyway, trucks pull better than Suvvies, typically, and diseasels better than petrol.
