Exploration in Instagram

Instagram gets pretty bad rap, and I can kinda see why much of the time. It's hard to see the artistic appeal of taking photos of any old crap and slapping a filter on it. Or taking constant pictures of yourself. I also object to people who just use it as a scrapbook for any old images they find online, or people who use proper cameras, upload stuff to their phone, and then post it - it rather defeats the purpose of the instantaneous nature of Instagram.

I digress. I believe it's quite possible to put effort into phone camera shots and I've tried to do that with the ones below. Most of the time I shoot using the regular iPhone camera and then run shots through Instagram. Sometimes I'll use a different app and do the same. Sometimes I'll edit using a different app, or sometimes I'll just use Instagram.

It's the same as when people started post-processing digital photography: everyone talked about how easy it was to make photos look good and almost how unfair that was.

I don't agree. Good photography will always be good photography. And yes, some types of photography can be done simply with a cameraphone.

Obviously, there are cases where people (who don't really appreciate photography) will be blown away with some stupid, overcooked HDR or think that any piece of crap with an Instagram filter on it looks amazing; but that's just the way the world is, especially now with how easy it is to share stuff.

Anyway, in my opinion, those are great examples of some nice photography, no matter the medium used or the filters applied.
In fact, it's a great example of why Instagram should exist.
