High School

I'm on the Votech bus right now. Just found out that someone got expelled and arrested for having drugs on him. Apparently he tried to get away but got tackled by an officer in the school. I never bothered to get to know him, and reasons like that are exactly why.

Hopefully people who are more or less like him with straighten up a bit.

It's just a cash grab for an already broke school
You can thank Messrs Abbott and Pyne for that. The Gonski reforms were good, solid policy that would have brought about meaningful long-term change, but wouldn't you know it, it wasn't a coalition policy and therefore had no redeeming value, and so it was binned without a second thought.

Work on Holidays really makes me miss going to School. I'm most excited to do Japanese when I get back, especially knowing that its a small class everyone who chose it are either my friends or people who aren't annoying :).

Its cool that you have Japanese as a language class; we have to take either Spanish or French for two years (or longer), and thats the only foreign language classes we can take.

Really? In our system, you can study practically any language you want. It's usually Japanese or French - depending on the school - in junior years, but once you get to the senior years, just about anything can be done from modern languages through to classical Greek and Latin. Of course, you're limited by the availability of resources, and only the big private schools have large language faculties, but come the final exams, it's not unheard of for one person in the state to be doing a particular subject.

Ordered my senior shirt today. Have to say that they honestly didn't do a very creative job unlike last years. But, whatever. I just want one so I could remember this year. On the the other hand I have a three day school week next week. Thanks to having Monday off to civil rights day, after that I have three days of finals/midterms. Because of my schedule I have a study hall Friday and the block after is my math class (which I have an A average) so I don't have to even come in. The next two quarters are going to be interesting since I have three study halls and three classes.

How many hours of community service are you guys required to do a year and what do you guys do?
None for actual school, 6 hours a month for Honor Society and 12 Hours total as a part of the Government project. I like to help out at the local church when they hold dinners

My high school required 80 hrs. in order to graduate - 20 a year. I volunteered to help teach kids from ages 5-12 basketball. Around 4 hours every Saturday. Then Sunday I would spend all day at the hospital.

Plus tutoring in English and Algebra for grades 9 and 10.

I procrastinated so I did all my hours in my senior year.

Got my 80hrs done pretty quickly. Ended up with around 130hrs.

Also, you can volunteer at your parents' jobs. Or find something to do in your community, ie; clean-up.

My first day of school is on a Friday:indiff:
I go back on that Tuesday. Then Years 7, 11 and 12 start on Wednesday, and Years 8, 9 and 10 go on Thursday. Then you start on Friday.

So what are you whinging about?

None. Our system doesn't have mandatory community service as a prerequisite to graduation.

Excuse my American mind, but how does that work? Why does certain grades/Years start on a certain day?

We like to introduce Year 7 to high school life quickly, but without overwhelming them. It gives them a chance to meet everyone, learn their way around the school and get all of the information that they need. So Years 8, 9 and 10 get delayed by a day.

As for Year 11 and 12, they're in their final years, and time is of the essence. One day might not sound like it will make much of a difference, but Year 11 is only three terms before they start the Year 12 course in Term 4 (the final exams take six to eight weeks, given the range of subjects on offer, so the Year 12 course is brought forward by a term to give them enough time to do everything in time for university placements).

Oh, I'm required 80 hours in total or 20 hours every year. I just signed up to volunteer at the town library. Hopefully I'll have enough time to get 20 hours.

Really nervous for my midterms and finals (in some classes) tomorrow. After studying all weekend I still feel like I'm a bit unprepared for them. Then I have my SAT's on Saturday at my rival school. Not looking forward to that.

Tomorrow is the first day of the third grading period for my school, which also is the first day of the second semester. This year is absolutely flying by like a Lamborghini.

I obviously can't predict the future, but I'm hoping for things that go the usual, average way. The only change in schedule I have is the end of gym class for the year, and in place of that, all the Votech guys and gals like myself leave for Votech earlier, but we go back at the normal time.

What Lamborghini?

Tomorrow is also the first day of second semester for me. The classes (that I know for sure that I have to take) are Trigonometry Honors, Chemistry 1 Honors, Gov. and Econ, and Spanish II. At no point will I get a break of work from any class; I also have to worry about the ACT which is due in April, college scholarships and applications, and maybe the SAT if I really wanted to. My birthday is coming in March and by that time, I'm considering getting a job at a nearby town (a 20 minute drive to and from).

Shoot me.

What Lamborghini?
One moving at top speed, I guess.

Wow, that's pretty damn tough

Quite. I was having an anxiety attack just thinking about it weeks ago.

I'll make it through... somehow. All I know is that if I can make it through that, I'm set for college then. Also will make the senior year a whole lot easier to get through.

I don't know if it will, but telling yourself either that its easy or that high school isn't meant to be easy might help.

I'm actually worried a little bit about the senior prank this year. I have no idea what it is, since I don't get involved with that stuff, but I hope it doesn't affect me. People in my grade are... idiots... to say the least.

A lot of the Juniors in my school are known troublemakers. I'm fearing next year's prank over here the most.

Regarding senior pranks:

I've not heard one single story about them in my school, although in two years, there'll probably be a HUGE one knowing some of the current Sophomores. :nervous:

My school is so small that we're all pretty much in on everything , I've helped out the Senior Class doing the prank before, and I don't think our class has planned anything yet. We're still waiting on where we're going for our Senior trip

In our school, the Grade 9 students are troublemakers. They act like American gangsters and the basketball players are the worst.

In our school the Year 7s are the evil bunch. Seriously when I was in Year 8, the Year 7s I knew in public school changed drastically they are like totally new people.

Though most of my Year has surprising have not changed from there Year 7 ways, most classes are a nightmare if you are lower then the 2nd Highest Class in your subject (which luckily for me science was the only one). We were the first year to cancel our Year 10 formal (though I wasn't going anyway due to my disliking of formals).
