High School

You mean you don't?

The Australian system calls for a one-hour break every day, which is usually broken up into two parts. Most schools opt for twenty minutes for recess and forty at lunch, but I have seen it split into two half-hour segments before.
The key word is Australian.

The U.S. system (generally) is get up, endure one hour and thirty minutes per class four times with lunch near or at noon, and go home. Only when you are a senior (at my school at least) do you only have at least two class periods with the other two periods as open.

My senior year was the year that the district changed from an 8 period schedule to a 6 period schedule. When it was 8, we had 3 types of days- M days, A days, and B days. M days had all 8 classes with 45 minute classes, A days were the four classes listed as A (the odd classes on M days with 90 minute periods), an B days (the evens on M days with 90 minute periods). M days only happened on Mondays, A days were on Tuesday and Thursday, and B days were Wednesday and Friday.

The switch to 6 basically made M days happen every day with the exception of Wednesdays which had shorter classes to include a seminar period. I didn't mind the change because it meant that I had Advanced Gym (which contrary to its name, wasn't advanced at all-the class simply involved playing games) every day. Then I followed that with accounting which was fairly easy.

Well, I have seen half a dozen different models throughout schools. We currently have eight periods of forty-five minutes - two before recess, two between recess and the five-minute break, two between the break and lunch, and two after lunch. And despite having an hour set aside for lunch, teachers usually only get about fifteen minutes to actually have a break. I have a loading of twenty-eight classes in a week, plus two sessions of duty.

My system is an 8 period, 50 minute per period including lunch on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays
On Wednesdays we have 8 45 minute periods including the lunch, and a 45 minute advisory.

For seniors, a lot of us have bridge classes so that means like 4-5 classes. I technically have 6 classes, since I have two college classes but they are taken at the school.

After being sick on vacation, I really wasn't feeling like school. However, when I got home I decided to go through the mail and received a letter from my #1 college. I immediately got excited and opened it and I got in!!!! Going to start the financial aid stuff first thing tomorrow with my guidance counselor!

So, today was interesting.

First and last block my class had a substitute teacher, both of which I would say were a bit coo-coo. The sub for first block, precalculus and trig, had a hard time pronouncing words, which may not be his fault of course. But he treated the whole class, full of seniors, like we were in the third grade. The way he worded his instructions and eld a general conversation was obnoxiously simplified it made me want to stand up and remind him we were in fact adults. He also had a bit of a power trip at the end of class. See, at my school we have a separate building with all technical or innovative classes, so there is a separate bell to release students to catch the shuttle to the technology building. The substitute did not like the fact that four kids left the class at the time of that bell to catch their shuttle bus, despite multiple explainations that they did not just simply get up and walk out. He identified the four students that left and reported them to the administration for "insubordination," when they were just doing as they normally would.

The fourth block substitute was just loony. She legitly made me wonder if she was high on something. When I walked into class, she was freaking dancing to some 1980s music like it was modern day. Wat? Who dances in the middle of a classroom absent-mindedly? She also confused her own paperwork for ours and again, talked to us like we were 7. Now, I've had really strict and grumpy subs, but nothing of this level. It makes me wonder how hard it is to become a substitute in my state.

Oh, and one last thing. I was walking in the extremely congested halls today, getting to class, minding my own business when I hear a girl say "nice butt" and was promptly slapped on the rear. I didn't get a chance to see who she was as the halls were filled with students but it's not the first time I've been "stealthily complimented" on my hind. I don't even know how I shold feel about this. I guess it's a compliment. Not really much I can do about it, it's just something I'll have to deal with I suppose.

That is pretty funny! Usually at my school if we have a substitute, we just play Halo the entire time. And i still have no clue how ones butt is supposed to be better than anothers. I mean how does one fathom that?

Your guess is as good as mine. It's really not that big of a deal for me, I don't feel violated or anything. The administration, to my knowledge, does know of various incidents like such and is looking into it.

About the substitutes, I can't wait for our regular teachers to read off the "comments" from the subs. I'm sure they'll be as amused as we were.

I can't name how many times this has happened with my class.

That's funny... though I don't understand why girls would do that. I've had a female friend did that to me in my 4th block in 9th grade. I just went, "OK..." because I was partly out, but... why?

To my knowledge girls can be just as fond of a nice rear as guys can. Might've been the jeans I'm wearing, they're rather snug in the back. But the same happened wearing athletic shorts so maybe not. Enough on this though, not that big of a deal. I just can't wait to hear about the subs again.

I hate substitutes so much. Whenever you try to ask them a question, they stare at you like a dear staring at headlights. My biggest pet peeve with them is that they can never get my name right when calling attendance.

Sub: "Danielle?"
Me: "It's 'Daniel.'"
Sub: "Ohhhh."

Since I'm 18 now, I really want to get my name shortened to just "Dan," so that way, no one in the future will mistake it. I realize I'm being a little ridiculous, but people need to learn to read.

There was a kid who, one day last year, threw a knife on my bus. And did he get punished?

No.
Ugh. It seems that schools really need to pay more attention to stuff like this. Or students need to speak up or something. I don't usually have to deal with this. Might have something to do with me walking to school. IT'S THE ONLY WAY. Some take public transit.

In unrelated news, we started a lab in Chemistry related to our stoichiometry unit, which is apparently the hardest part of the course. I've had minimal troubles when we're not doing exercises involving the whole class. Mist have to do with the methods I use for calculations. Anyways, for the lab, we observed a double replacement reaction between two aqueous solutions, forming a different solution and a precipitate, and then we filtered the precipitate. Next class we'll find the actual yield of the reaction compared to the theoretical yield. The solutions were sodium carbonate and calcium chloride. The reaction formed a sodium chloride solution with a precipitate of calcium carbonate. I think the molarity of one of the solutions was 0.5M, the other 0.7M. I forget which was which, and I don't feel like getting up and grabbing my lab textbook to see. Yeah, I'm lazy. Also, I didn't bring my lab textbook to school, cause I omit textbooks I know I don't need, and the teacher decided to do the lab at the last minute. Good thing the person beside me, who is by default my lab partner, brought hers. Also, I've been getting 95 percent in chemistry. And I'm probably taking chemistry again next year, cause I find it interesting.

My school has a five-minute break in the middle of the day, but that's mostly because we use an eight-period system.
Huh. Where I go, they use an 8 period system with day 1 and day 2, each having four periods, or whatever people feel like calling them. I just call them blocks. Unless you meant eight in a single day. After the first block every day, we have a 10 or so minute "nutrition break", with a full 40 minute lunch break in the middle of the day. But we have to stay inside. It's not like recess back in elementary.

That's why we get casuals who know their content.

I've been there and done that. Although in my defence, I was trying to pronounce "Kanapathipillai".

I have four study halls and one of them falls during lunch. So my friends and I go down, eat than make our way back to the library. We get stopped by a newer faculty member (he arrived at the beginning of the year). He started yelling at us that we were skipping class and was going to give us detention. I told him that we came from lunch and we were going to the library. He than started yelling that we should have stayed in the lunch room. We had gotten permission from the principle that we could go back to the library right after lunch if you have senior privileges (which my friends and I have). He didn't believe that we had senior privileges and was bringing us to the office when the principle saw us. He wasn't thrilled with the person that didn't believe us. All I wanted to do was go back and finish working on my current event for civics lol.

Ok so we had a fire drill today, then bell rings and I go to my locker. I pack my stuff and almost shut my locker BUT the fire alarm starts ringing.... I'm like :indiff: But it's dismal time!? Then I'm like SOMEONE PULLED IT! I run out of school and I start laughing like hell then my friends join and we die.

This happened to me once too. It was so cold that anyone who could take a bus went inside it to wait out the fire alarm (myself included). We got to watch everyone else turn to ice cubes.

So it was like this, I come out of school laughing hard as hell then my friends are like you pull it? I'm like nahhh. Then we all start laughing historically and then we go on to our busses and I directed School Bus Traffic because Mr. Parry (Principal) wanted me to do it since I'm his favorite then we left school ten minutes late :P

Blocked classes were the best. Blocked cooking class? The best thing ever. All we would do is mess around and talk about stupid stuff. We would cook up random foods and chill out so hard. Just two hours of just awesome stuff.

Blocked gym classes were cool too. We would come from the lunch room right to the gym and we'd be so hyped up. Even though I thought high school was kinda *****, I now look back at it with good memories.

Bumming around around the hallways before class starts and having to sprint to class with your buddies.

Sharing lockers with friends and getting into pointless trouble from time to time...

I think my 9th grade of high school was the best. That was when I was still ultra laid back. Too bad my grades were terrible.

Ugh, high school was fun. Enjoy it while and when you can.

Might have a half day tomorrow, 1 inch per hour boiiii, then Thursday no school probably. But then the whole Parcc schedule is gonna be flooded up XD

I'm not too sure. Looks like a full day, with the possibility of a delayed opening on Wednesday.

Then again, I'm in a different part of NJ so it could be different for you.

I'm in Middlesex county, so Central Jersey is for me. We do get a lot Snow tho, but I'm by Jersey shore so yah

I know that I'm not from the north and that the northern school districts have different snows days compared to the South, but I would have gotten absolutely fed up with the amount of missed school days and school make-up days that I would have to do. I can deal with a delay, but not a day closing.
I only had a day closing because of an ice storm knocking out the power for most of the city, and we had to make that day up. Afterwards, it's been followed up with 2 hour delays.

I'll do a quick summary on my current spot in high school later.
