Sounds like me , my last experience with painting (1:24 plastic kit) left me with a face full of spray-paint fog and a dripping model.

I didn't do that bad but the paint tore off whenever I picked it up off a surface. I need to make a stand.

Trying to do too much too fast. This kind of stuff takes time. Lots of time.

That would help, yeah.

Thats just bare metal. Plan is british racing green with the yellow nose + stripe.

Well either way, I can't wait to see the final product.

But I have to say that the bare metal looks good, maybe a "stealth" edition? ;)

Awesome job, guys. Looking forward to more work from everyone here. I guess I'll post the customs I've done, so far. Hope to have a new one done sometime next month.

Forgot about my first custom.

Just got back from the Hobby store. Went in looking for something close to British Racing Green and they just happened to have "British Green" so I bought that along with some Bright Yellow for the stripe. Got home to realize that my primer is dark gray, so I went ahead and sprayed it first, then did a light coat of flat white paint so that the green and yellow pop a bit better.

Just built this simple rig to hold the car while painting. 👍

Materials:

Skewer (used for cooking)
Battery clip

Well my first attempt at creating a stripe with paint didn't go over very well. The green bled into the yellow under the tape. So before I strip the car for a second time to re-do it, I'm going to try getting rid of where the green bled through by using a paint brush. If that doesn't work, then the car will just remain all green until I can find a decal or something that will work better than paint. :indiff:

Suddenly I wish I hadnt given my massive box of hundreds of Hot Wheels to my cousins. I have an old Hot Wheels Formula/Indy car that would look great in Red. Good stuff guys!

That sucks to hear. take some pics so we can see lol.

Also, if it really doesn't work try making custom tampos for it. It'll be complicated and you'll have to clear the car afterwards, but it might work.

What about that pinstriping tape thingy? The one where you can lay the tape as you bend it to your liking. I forget what it's called.

Wanted to do a wheel swap today, but it required new custom axles. Had some brass rods that I got from a hobby store a couple months back, so I put them to use. Here's the turn out...

The wheels just had to go.

The size I used.
IMG_3436.jpg

I used a hammer to flatten the ends.

The black tab on the base acts as suspension. If the axles are above the tab it gives the car a slammed look. If it's below, then it sits at normal ride height.

And here it is, low as can go, with BBS LM's. :D

And at normal ride height. All that's left to do is some minor detailing and it'll be finished.

Also made custom axles for the Aerostar. Now it sits on chrome 10SP. Should've blacked out the ends, but you get the idea.

This is probably another stupid question, but is there a way I can get some wheels for modifying diecasts? I don't have enough to take apart and swap wheels, so I'm wondering if there is another way to get some... :dunce:

The only way I know is by buying other cars or you can buy the HW's customizing wheel pack. But, I don't care much for rubber wheels, so I just use donor cars.

I know it has to be enamel but I can't find any white primer. Only gray. But I did find white lacquer primer. Would that work or no?

Edit: Found it. 👍

that's a pity. You could paint it again, clear it, then paint the yellow stripe over and then clear it again. The masking was pretty good.

I hardly ever clear my cars to be honest. Most paint is shiny enough, and it's pretty durable. I might wait for the green to dry all the way, then carefully re-mast and re-spray the yellow.

@Cano

You use the model spray paint right? How long should I wait between painting the primer and the first coat of paint? Also how long between coats of paint?

I don't use model paint nor spray paint, bud. I get my cars painted with a bud that owns a body shop, so it's all automotive paint shot with a paint gun.

BUT. I know that. Primer dries in like 15 minutes lol. Wait a couple hours after the final primer coat then shoot a first hand of paint, then let it dry for a good 24 hours, then shoot second.

Rubber Tires actually make the car feel super super good in quality. I don't know why.

If the base is plasitc, a cutter or some pliers will do. If the base is metal, you need to file them away... bleh, use your drill and carefully make out the prongs with the drill bit. CAREFULLY. Specially if you're gonna reuse the wheels/tires, if you as much as touch them the drill will eat them.

I wait about 15 minutes between primer coatings, usually 2-3 light coats.

Then an hour later I do the first light coating of paint. This is usually followed with 2-3 more light coats about an hour apart. You really don't need to wait 24 hours between coats. (climate has a lot to do with this too)

I have a friend who actually paints with spray cans, albeit high-quality stuff like Tamiya and Testors, and he always tells me that he waits a day between each coat of paint. His finishes are always out of this world for a spraycan, sometimes better than those achieved by my paint friend with a paint gun and automotive products.

If you have the time and patience, sure you can wait that long. But not really necessary. A lot of spray paints dry pretty quickly these days. Some are even branded to dry in less than 15 minutes.
