How Important Should Daily Driver Cars be in GT5?

Is one of the problems with daily drivers recognition across the different markets? Certain cars are common to Japan, Europe & America, whilst others are iconic and recognised in all markets, often as a result of films and television.
I've had a look at the GT5 wishlist, and have no idea what some of the cars on the list are, or why they would make a good addition to GT5. I would say the majority of these are the American domestic models. I'm sure I could name a number of European cars which a lot of non Europeans would not recognise.
Faced with the probable large car line up in GT5, I doubt I will drive every car in the game, so how can I be encouraged to drive cars that I don't relate to.

I enjoy the daily driver cars, but wonder at a selection criteria.

Events are what would make these cars shine... In the end, there are only so many times you can run a car on the Nurb against a ghost before you get bored... Also, simply taking a look at how many units sold world wide should determine their popularity, or at least how likely they are to be popular.

very important to add daily driver cars, i live in the uk and would love to see some uk cars in here, cars i lusted after when i was younger, these are probably gonna fly over your heads but cars like the:

ford hot hatch range:
xr3 1600cc carb
xr3i 1600cc injection
rs1600i rallye sport derived meaner version of xr3i
rs turbo series one and two - (you can see a two on google video wasting an evo mitsi, not a good start i'll give him that but its front wheel drive, and only 1600cc)

click on pic to see bigger series 2. 1990 model

these cars all took on the mighty golf gti mk1 and 2 and created millions of sales for ford uk! they were only 1600 cc but were brilliant handling cars and have huge fan clubs keeping them on the roads, considering they are at most 25 years old!! the rs turbos were just awesome!! we need cars like this in gt games!!

spud

ps, im not a ford driver, drive an e30 325 1990

-> I like to see some distinct car from Asia too like:

basically there are so many cars in GT4 that should not be in the game and so many cars that are not in the game that should be. Take out all the rubbish 70's and 80's slow Japanese saloons and hatches and put in some worth while cars from the same era such as Mrk2 escorts and stuff. also take out all those **** little people movers from Dihatsu and other makers. what happened to the Noble cars, old bmw m3 and escort/sierra cossy. what im saying is there are so many useless cars that are crap to drive no matter how you tune them so why are they on there. Because of these cars so many cars that hace changed the face of the auto and motorsport industry have been missed.

👍 too right, there were rumours about the cossies being in gt4 but they were silly dreams of forum people i guess, would love to see the old (first) m3 in there and have it pitted up against the likes of the rs cosworth and rs500 cosworth like they used to be head to head in the british touring cars, great battle of turbo vs na!! but sadly we have to make do with a zillion japanese cars, dont get me wrong, todays technology breakthroughs mostly come from japan, but do we really have to see every spec of every gts/r model skyline made? i only tend to use 2 models myself, r33 gtr and r32 gtr, but the rest just dont get bought, i spend most of my time driving cars i would use in real life without going to rob a bank, things i could afford to buy!!👍

they should do more research into how many forcasted sales they want with this next installment, if they promised a shed load of european/uk cars then i'd be first in the queue!! mayeb if they got in touch with some of the massive forums like this one and actually asked people what they wanted, surely its easier and cheaper to model an 80's hot hatch rather than tracking down an old lm car from the 80's to model?

-> As what I said before, smaller cars (like Daihatsu Midget I and II, BMW Insetta, Subaru 360, and Fiat 500) deserves to be in smaller race courses (like Autumn Ring Mini, Motorland, etc.) to ease out the gripes of power-hungry, supercar loving GT fans here.

->As much as possible I don't want get rid of all the cars that are already in the GT universe, like PD has been doing for the past decade (by eliminating Vector, Venturi, [R]Honda Accord Touring Car, etc.). Add cars as much as possible by balancing all the cars that will be suitable with all the tracks available. (:

having daily drivers in gt is a staple of the series that makes the game interesting. but it needs better choices for that area. Early 90's cars should make more apperances for japanese cars, the sentra se-r for instance and the mazda mx-6, and mx-3. This game always needs more american and european cars, I would love to see a grand prix gtp or opel astra.

^ I think you mean to say US-based Japanese cars, like 1999 Honda Civic Si Coupe, 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX and 2003 Mazdaspeeed Protege Turbo.

-> And also not just American and European cars, but also Austrailian and Asian (southeast asia) cars too. (:

Yes, but the Civics and Eclipses are just as important as the MX-3s and Sentras, so they should keep appearing in the GT series.
Although, as good as the '95 Eclipse looks (it's the only one in the GT games besides the additional 2000 model in GT4), they need the '97-'99 ones.
Like this 1997 model (the best style to date, IMO):

I'm curious as to what I classes as a slow car, as here are some figures for Mk1,2 & 3 Escorts

Mk1 RS1600,120 bhp @ 6500,110 lb ft @ 4500
0-60 8.9 , 0-100 32.3 1/4 Mile 16.7 Top Speed 113mph

0-60 8.7, 0-100 27.9, 1/4 Mile 16.7, Top Speed 118mph

Mk3 RS Turbo 1, 132bhp @ 6000, 133lb ft @ 3000

0-60 9.2, 0-100 23.0, 1/4 mile 16.8 Top Speed 125mph

I'm not slagging off these cars, I would like some/all included in GT5, but its just to put into perspective how much power acceleration & top speed have increased.
It also shows the video link that spudboy posts is to a seriously tuned Escort, and we don't know how or if the Evo was tuned.

the biggest flaw in gt is that while their are some very interesting daily drivers they have a tendancey to get carried away and add to many versions of the same car. yoiu really do not need six versions of a miata that each are only slightly different. same goes forthe suggested escort mk-1

While I see your point I see no reason not to include variations of the same car, and as many of them as possible. The fact is that creating a car that looks the same as another takes little effort since all the modelling can simply be copied from the identical or nearly identical model and altered in accord so the variation models arn't replacing anything, you can argue disk space but there was far, far ore than needed for GT4 and with blue-ray I don't think we'll be seeing one of thoes full before the next gen media is on the horizon at least.

well i really just want to see more cars in gt. while i do not mind more daily drivers i would love to see the return of certain cars. some more caddys would rock along with the return of the vectors from gt2. I loved those cars:dopey:

yeah the escort was tuned, dunno if the evo was? dont know what power the escort had but i'd say about 300bhp, which is about the same as a standard evo give or take 30bhp, but the escort s2 is an extremely basic car, down to the gearbox/engine set up, even i can work on them!! :) but the money you put into both cars produces different results, you would get 300bhp out of an escort for about 2.5 ish grand, say 1k for an engine, 600-700 for a hybrid turbo, 300 for an ecu, intercooler upgrade and water inj an stuff, 2 grand wouldnt even buy you a top spec turbo for an evo. the engine in the escort is virtually unbreakable cos of its simplicity, i ran several escorts and orions with the cvh engine and didnt kill a single one :dopey: the escort is only a 1600cc engine that dates back to about 1982!!

oh and just for the record, the escort driver is crap, really bogged down in 2nd, tut tut! :scared:

I would definitely like to have everyday drivers (more of them). They add to the challenge of the GT series. I remember playing GT4 when I was bored of racing the Nissan R89C (I think) and getting myself a 1990 Infiniti G20 and making have a nicer suspension over bumps. Sometimes I like to see just how boaty I can make a car. A few of the cars they need more variety of. One of which is the Honda Civic. (I know you're thinking...what, they already have tons) Not once, has a 1998 Honda Civic EX coupe been in this game. My dad had one and it was a great very good looking Civic. And I know, that right off the lot, a Civic does not do 130 or 140...my dad tried getting that Civic going as fast as possible, it did 109. Well obviously thats because of the limiter, but they need to add in more tuning options such as taking off the limiter and putting on larger wheels.
I've always wondered what driving my car, a Suzuki Forenza Wagon, against a Toyota Camry would fair, but i've not yet been able to do that. It'll be a neat day when they got a 1995 Toyota Camry Wagon. :P I hope that PD will add more of these because as I said above, it adds more of a challenge.

Some vehicles i've wanted in the GT series:
Toyota Camry (Wagon)
Hyundai Sonata
Hyundai XG350L
Suzuki Forenza (Wagon)
Suzuki Grand Vitara (2006)
Toyota Avalon
Smart (All models)
Kia Spectra

Again...these add a challenge that fast cars can't give. Actually being able to drive that boaty little Kia around the track and beat the Honda in front of you!

Continuing my Enthusia experience, I recently reached the %25 completion stage of Driving Revolution. I ended up picking up more cars in Free Run. Here are some more Daily Driver-type vehicles:

ENTHUSIA CLASS D:
Volkswagen Touareg
Cadillac Seville STS (some of you know my feelings on Cadillac)
Mercedes-Benz G500L*
Land Rover Range Rover
Toyota Celsior
Audi allroad quattro
Nissan Elgrand
Toyota Alphard
Subaru Forester
" Legacy Lancaster 6
Mitsubishi Pajero Short
Audi 14 3.0 quattro Sport
Honda Odyssey Absolute
Peugeot 406 Coupé
Renault Avantime
Nissan Primera ZOV
Jaguar X-Type 2.5 V6 Sport
Chevrolet Astro
Toyota Voltz (Pontiac Vibe in America)
Mazda Atenza (Mazda 6 in America)
Mazda Atenza Sport 23Z (Mazda 6 Five-Door in America(?))
Hyundai Tiburon Coupe
BMW 2002 Turbo
Mini Cooper S
Renault 5 Turbo 2
Mazda Roadter RS-II
Toyota Vitz RS Turbo
Nissan Wingroad
Toyota MR2 'G-Limited Super Charger
Toyota MR-S V Edition
Peugeot 206cc S16
Toyota Corolla 1.8 Luxel
Mazda Eunos Roadster S-Special Type II
Citroen Saxo VTS
Daihatsu Storia X4
Peugeot 106 S16
Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA
Honda Fit 1.5T

Lot of them, eh? There's plenty more in EPR's D-Class lineup, but I wanted to focus on daily drivers or at least vehicles not really on a sportscar level. Forgive me if any of this info is outdated. I've had this thing pre-typed a long time ago and just releasing it now.

I love having normal production cars in the game. Normal cruisin is fun, especially if you have the DFP. Also, I love tuning these little weak cars to be absolutely amazin. Maybe not super fast, but crazy fast enough to make Nurburgring a challenge.

Recently I just tuned a new MR-S. Now this car is a bit sportier compared to most of the cars of the same class. For you muscle heads, its just a little 1.8 inline four. The beauty of this car is how light it can get as well as all the little Japanese cars. But, I've been able to compete against Ford GTs, jaguar xj220s and some amg benzes on level 10. Normally I can only compete against high powerd cars in technical courses (i.e. deep forest). But, I've been able to compete on high speed courses too (i.e. Tokyo). Normally I get creamed on high speed courses cause I always use an underpowered car.
Too finish off, I love seeing the cars I own and the cars my friends own in a game, where we can tune it up with money we never have and race them.

My 2 cents

One of the things that appeals to me in the Gran Turismo series is that I have the chance to drive the cars that, short of winning the lottery, I will never get to drive on a day to day basis. However, that said, I think the "daily driver" cars are just as important. There are countless 'common' cars I love driving, some more then the big sports cars. Example being I love driving the later MR2s, they're sports cars yes, but they're cheap in real life (should know, dad has one), and they're some what more satisfying then driving say the McLaren SLR or RUFs. Then there's the Trueno SS Version, due to the Initial D connection, satisfies me more then an RX-7. The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 350 satisfies me more then a Corvette Z06. Ok the Sting Ray isn't exactly a common daily drivers car per se, but it's cheaper and some what less powerful.

So I'd say keep the super cars, and the race cars and the overly priced sports cars in the game, but more importantly keep the daily drivers because, whilst the slower ones do jar me off from time to time, it's nice to drive something normal.

The daily drivers are the MOST important part of the GT series. Need we remember the original GT. It brought to light the possibilitys of daily drivers, and brought knowledge of many cars most Americans knew next to nothing about. It also pioneered non-sportscars in a racing game.
GT2 to it to another world.
GT3 was crap. (car-wise) But still kept the daily drivers around.
GT4: The return and additions of many DD's, and as such, is a far superior game to all previous GT's.

GT5: Must include DD's, should be more, without them, it wouldnt be GT.

Variations of cars are as simple as this: you want to quote my post. you only want to quote 80% of it. you have 2 options: 1.you can type my post yourself, in a response, leaving out what you don't need. Or, 2. cut, copy,& paste. Now delete what isnt necessary.
We would all rather see 1000cars, with only 1 variation, than 350 cars, with 3 variations each.
But that's not the same amount of work. even though the latter is 50 more models, it is about 50% of the work.
this may not concern you, but it concerns PD, they are running a business, and can't spend a gazillion hours, and a gazillion dollars, and only produce 1 game, every 5 years. Don't we have to wait long enough?

Honestly though, and this is strictly my opinion, but I'd rather lose all variations, (300ish) just to gain 50 new cars. but that's me. And ONLY if they're the right cars. which is where the problem lies. what cars? it never ends. DD's, Supercars, both, racecars, trucks, everybody wants something different.
I say DD's, and the big 3, makes me 1 satisfied customer.

Ford Mustang Mach 1.

I have a friend who drives one every day. But yes, plain jane cars are the core of GT. Always have been, always will be.

Toyota ist (think of the Scion xA.)
Toyota bB (think of the Scion xB.)

Well, both of them are in GT4, under those names. They even appear in standart races... The Toyota ist appears in the Compact Cup (Professional Hall), and the Toyota xB (it also looks exactly like a Scion xB) appears at the Sunday Cup.

Question for the Enthusia gamers. How does Enthusia's inclusion of daily drivers and not-otherwise-raceable machines compare to the variety of machines in Gran Turismo games? I think the combination is unique in Enthusia. Who would road race (not road rage) a Toyota Land Cruiser aroun Marco Strada or Tsukuba? And do you think PD can learn from Enthusia about including more daily driver cars in GT5?

Yeah the variety of daily driven cars are unique in Enthusia. Personally i dont really race with them but more to have fun, its nice to know they are there.

OT -> I played Enthusia, but without the D-pad (only the Dual Shock only) is kinda annoying, I have to play it with the DFP (but i'm one of the unfortunate people who doesn't have one). But enough of that.

BT-> I was enraged when EPR has the MBZ G-Class and VW Touareg with some Minivans the GT that wasn't feartured. In fact that EPR has more trucks and minivans on average than GT (surprising, I know!). As my sig says, I want more cars in GT especially DD cars. The Mitsubishi Airtrek Turbo has no direct competition in GT and the Subaru Forester 2.5XT (featured in EPR) is a worthy opponent to the Mitsu. :(

I finally BOUGHT Enthusia instead of renting it all the time. I will be able to go straight to Enthusia for discussions in just about any racing game.

Small confession of mine... I'm strangely addicted to the Mercedes-Benz G500L. Maybe because it's so boxy or old-school like. Just like racing it in Free Run for some strange reason. I think I even tried it on Enthusia's version of the Nürburgring Nordschleife. And as you would imagine, I wasn't happy with its performance even despite the fact a Lexus RX-series hybrid SUV raced last year's 24-hour event. I think Enthusia had the concept of "something for everyone" a bit further ahead than the Gran Turismo series. I usually consider SUV's as trucks, but only GT has pickup trucks. Only GT. Not Forza. Not Enthusia. GT has the pickups. Enthusia has a little of everything for a game in which even 60 mph is exciting with all the fancy speed effects. Vans and such are rated as "Multipurpose" machines in Enthusia. One game picture of Enthusia featured a Mercedes-Benz G500L rallying on the sands of Mirage Crossing. The G500L isn't the most powerful of the G-Class SUVs. The powerful G-Class SUV honor goes to the G55 Kompressor AMG. You know what you're getting from Mercedes-Benz when you have a vehicle with AMG loving tender care. Here is perhaps the big difference:

G500: 292hp from a 5.0 liter NA V8 - G55 Kompressor AMG: 469hp from a supercharged AMG V8

It almost seemed like whatever PD could do with daily driver cars, Enthusia went to some unfathomable level. Who would dare race a Chevy Astro around a technical street course? Who'd try to drift out a Nissan Elgrand (it does have an RWD setup) around Dragon Range? Enthusia probably upstaged GT in respects of daily driver cars in competitive motorsport. They normally wouldn't and shouldn't be in these conditions. But who said they were relegated to being stuck in traffic or hauling groceries or kids? It's just crazy devotion, GTPlanet. Some people are like that.
