I've just went thru my last three controllers, and now I'm wondering how many other people have broken since hetting their PS3.

Zero. I thought I was wearing through my Sixaxis for Fallout though. The X button stayed down every once in a blue moon.

My current controller is about had it, I guess. Both sticks... stick. It's very frustrating using the Sony controller, since the analog sticks are HORRIBLE. I hope there's a better controller made, 'cause I'd like to buy it.

2. Call of Duty is notoriously hard on the left analog stick. If you want to sprint you hold down L3 and forward. Naturally you wind up doing this A LOT, resulting in the stick staying up after letting go.

Do they still use L3 to run in COD5? If they use it in MW2 I will be quite annoyed because they could pick a 'less weak' button to use! Like one of the triggers.

The best would be Battlefield: Bad Company style. It is almost the same except you don't have to hold L3 as long as you're running, just press it and hold forward.

None so far... though I have had to "repair" my white DualShock 3 about 3 times and my original Sixaxis once.
What really annoys me about controllers with triggers (original Xbox, Xbox 360 and PS3) they can sometimes develop a squeak which drives me absolutely mental when I'm trying to concentrate.

None, all (2) are in full working order and I play alot of games. Although my L trigger feels a little strange (it's very soft) it still works fine.

Mr.Grandorifto, I think you really need to re word the title and question of the poll to ask how many controllers have you had to replace... as clearly some people have been voting for the number of controllers they actually have:

Given the fact that so far, you are the only one who has posted saying they have ever had to replace a controller, let alone three of them, and with only Solid Lifters saying he may very well have to replace his due to some problems with his sticks, it seems the poll isn't entirely reflective of that, thus may indeed need to be more specific otherwise, anyone just reading the poll results may very well be mislead.
Any way, you can add me to the ever growing list of those posting in this thread that have said that they never have had to replace a controller:
I use the original SIXAXIS controllers the most as I prefer the light weight, and rarely care about rumble. I can't even imagine trying to calculate how many hours have been logged on them from myself, my wife, our kids, relatives, neighbors, and friends. In fact, anyone who has very young kids (under 10), knows the ultimate reliability test is from the abuse these things get from kids, of which we put them through on a regular basis, especially when they invite the neighborhood kids over for game nights on the weekend.
One time in fact, a friend of my son's got angry and threw one of the controllers across the room and slammed it against the fireplace. The only damage was some scuff marks on the controller and the case was partially snapped open. I fixed it by simply removing the five screws on the bottom of the controller and snapped the case back into position. 👍
I have just recently noticed this happening on a few occasions. I suspect this is build-up of dare I say, skin cells and dust, working their way down to the contact areas of the button mechanism. I suspect all that is needed is to take it apart and wipe clean around that mechanism. I haven't personally bothered to do that , as it happens so rarely, but if it gets worse I'll probably do that. If I do, I'll be sure to let you know if it worked. 👍
Where did you read about the lifespan of the battery?
I have two controllers that I have had since the beginning, which was over two years ago that have logged countless hours of use with no signs of any kind of drop in battery power. In fact, unless a game has rumble that I want to use, I prefer using my original SIXAXIS controllers as they are so much lighter. 👍
That said, if you really had to, I'm sure you can change out the battery in a controller. I had to take one of my controllers apart after my son's friends threw it against the fireplace and partially snapped it open, and I'm fairly certain I saw easy access to the battery.
I can't recall the brand, but about six months ago when I wanted to buy an additional controller (from 3 to 4), I bought some 3rd party wireless controller as it was $10 cheaper than the PS3 brand... boy was that ever a mistake!
Not only was it not Bluetooth, so I had to use up a USB slot for the wireless dongle, but as you mentioned, the sticks and buttons just didn't feel right at all! I immediately took it back to Target and exchanged it for an official Dual Shock 3. I certainly won't make that mistake again!
I have not had any noise issues with any of the buttons or triggers, but for some games, that require holding down the trigger buttons for an extended period of time, I would have to regularly adjust my finger position, or else eventually my finger would slip off the end of the trigger... which is why I finally decided to pick up a set of these:
They work great, and this way you get the best of both worlds depending on when you want to use them.

I voted 4 by accident becuase I have four controllers. All of them are still working though

They just snap on right over the existing triggers making it easy to put them on and take them off depending on what you prefer, and perhaps the game you are playing. 👍
They work great, and this way you get the best of both worlds depending on when you want to use them.

Well, I have two Sixaxis, Sixaxi, Sixaxises 
and two Dual Shock 3s. All four are in proper working order.
Also, in PAIN if you are grabbing on to something that is moving, or you are hanging, over time your grip will start to slip. On a Sixaxis all you know is that you slipped. With the DS3 it begins to shake like muscles will do when they are straining. So, it gives you a five second warning to do something like Ooch (adjust) or let go and regrab.
And in LBP it shakes if you get close to something lethal, so that you get more than just a visual input on how close you can get without dying.
And I know a few games have used it to simulate a heart beat in a suspenseful situation, or when your life is low.
Honestly, when it is used well it is not just there to get your jollies off with. It can be a very useful aid. That said, it has been done very crappy too, like shaking non-stop when you die and only stopping when it loads you back to the last checkpoint/level/whatever.
This does remind me of how my dad used to blame my brother and I for breaking all the joysticks on our Atari and Commodore when he was the one that threw them down in anger.

When you are in a heavy firefight and dealing with muzzle flash in your eyes the red flashing indicator that you are getting shot is not apparent enough. I know in Warhawk the DS3 made a world of difference. It is really noticeable when you are in a vehicle or Warhawk and some guy is shooting you with a sniper rifle. On a Sixaxis your only indication is a slight ping noise and a flash of red, which is hard to see if you are shooting at someone already. With the DS3 that ping and flash is accompanied by a slight shudder, and that extra bit of sensory input is enough to grab your attention.

Am I the only one with pets that want to eat the analog sticks? I used to spray the bitter pet stuff on them until the day I went from a game straight to eat something and the bitter stuff transferred from controller to hand to food. I had recently washed my hands and didn't think five minutes on a controller that only I use would be an issue.

There have been comments from Sony about battery issues and them only lasting one to two years, similar to early iPods.
