Hey guys! I'm new to this wonderful site and would like to ask everyone, how would you rate some of these fine actors in the scale of 1 to 10, and if you can be bothered then tell a reason, why you rated them that way too, ok here goes:
Morgan Freeman(Shawshank Redemption)
Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking, I Am Sam, Carlito's Way)
Brad Pitt (12 Monkeys, Kalifornia, Se7en)
Denzel Washington(Malcolm X,Training Day, Philadelphia)
Tom Hanks(Castaway, Philadelphia, Saving Private Ryan)
Jimmy Stewart(It's A Wonderful Life, Vertigo, Rear Window)
Russell Crowe(Insider,A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator)
Marlon Brando(The Godfather, On The Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire)
Robert De Niro(Taxi Driver, Raging Bull)
Edward Norton(Fight Club, American History X, Primal Fear)
Al Pacino(Scarface, Scent Of A Woman, Godfather)
Kevin Spacey(American Beauty, Usual Suspects)
I put some films in there too, in case someone doesn't recognise the names.:-)

Morgan Freeman 10
Sean Penn 8
Brad Pitt 7
Denzel Washington 9
Tom Hanks 10
Jimmy Stewart 10
Russell Crowe 8
Marlon Brando 10
Robert De Niro 10
Edward Norton 9
Al Pacino 10
Kevin Spacey 10

Thats how i would rate them, what about you guys?

Too hard to rate on your scale - great idea though - I admire all these actors, except:
- Tom Hanks doesn't do anything adventurous (he needs to do some arthouse stuff)
- Brad has done some fantastic alternative stuff (he was fantastic in Snatch, but who can forgive him for Meet Joe Black)
Denzel Washington is pretty reliable
Russell Crowe is, in the last four years, very consistent - he's like Denzel, he should have won for the previous year's role (he was briliant in The Insider and A Beautiful Mind)
Ed Norton's okay but a little one characterish - his best work in American History X was ruined by the hopelessly characterised film
Al Pacino is reliable, but a bit one characterish
De Niro is great when he tries - but the last two films he tried in were 'Heat' and 'Goodfellas'
Kevin Spacey is brilliant, and generally pretty picky with his films (except Pay It Forward)
The older actors are hard to rate - Brando was fantastic in his early stuff, but you see him in Apocalypse Now and realise he's a fat drug addict - and it was all downhill from there. Jimmy Stewart is from a completely different era - but you see him in 'Rear Windown' and think, gee, he was pretty versatile.
Morgan Freeman - he's generally pretty solid, but he needs a really decent role, he seems to be a black actor who gets shoe-horned into 'token senior black roles' like than in 'Deep Impact'

Good question! Welcome to GTP. Here's my answer:

Morgan Freeman (9): Generally great, always good for a performance of a reliable, dependable, seen-it-done-it, looking out for his fellow man kind of person. Really good in se7en and Outbreak, exceptional in The Shawshank Redemption.

Sean Penn (no rating): Can't really comment as none of his performances stand out. Does a very good Dustin Hoffman impression in the I Am Sam trailers though.

Brad Pitt (5): Really variable quality of performance, but very good in Ocean's Eleven.

Denzel Washington (7): Good at what he does, but limited in what he does.

Tom Hanks (8): Fairly one-dimensional, but what he does he does very well. Excellent in Saving Private Ryan.

Jimmy Stewart (no rating): Don't think I've seen any of his films.

Russell Crowe (9): Very good in Gladiator, but haven't seen him in anything else. Good voice!

Marlon Brando (no rating): Don't think I've seen any of his films.

Robert De Niro (10): Excellent. Quite versatile but best when being bad. Heat is a simply awesome movie, but then in Analyse This he was funny too. Only Meet The Parents was total garbage. But then Awakenings was simply fantastic.

Edward Norton (no rating): Was he in 15 minutes? If so, I liked him, but not really sure about who he is!

Al Pacino (10): Excellent in Heat, pretty damn good in Donnie Brasco.

Kevin Spacey (10): A wide range of parts played, from the cheeky Irish chappie in Ordinary Decent Criminal through Mr Disturbed Mid-Life-Crisis in American Beauty to Kaiser Soze in The Usual Suspects. Great actor. (Always confuse him with Kevin Pollack though!)

May I also respectfully suggest the following candidates for rating:
Gary Oldman (Leon, Fifth Element)
Alan Rickman (Robin Hood, Die Hard 3, Harry Potter)
Harvey Keitel (Pulp Fiction, The Piano)
Dustin Hoffman (Outbreak, Rain Man)
Robin Williams (Good Morning Vietnam, Good Will Hunting, Awakenings).

Sorry i have to disagree about Edward Norton :) What is he done, like 6 or 7 movies in the curse of his career? I think he's played pretty large variety of roles, from nazi skinhead to preast in Keeping The Faith to geeky insomniac in Fight Club to card-shark loser in Rounders. I think he still has time to really prove himself though.

To answer the second question that was asked, i don't know if you ment 15 minutes or the Score, but Norton was in the Score with Marlon Brando and De Niro, Edward Burns was in 15 Minutes though :)

I'll abstain from voting due to the fact that i'm extremely biased in the subject.

I just think you all are very nice.

I can think of times during each one of these actors movie's that they did something wrong or off from their character, so i don't think any of them deserve a 10, considering 10 would be a perfect actor. a couple would get 9's but a lot would be around a 6 IMHO.

These all seem to be "face" characters. What I mean by that is they have a certain hitch or trait they give all of their characters.

If I had to say the best of the bunch, I would nominate Spacey. though he is a face player, he hides it quite well.

You could say that about every actor alive then. If you know an actor who isn't "a face character", i would gladly hear about him :)

I think everyone has certain caracteristics to them that is impossible to entirely shake off. For instance people sometimes accuse De Niro of playing the same character too often, but he's done so many movies in his career, that at the end of a day it's invetable and he's bound to repeat himself, but that doesn't take anything away from him as an actor...i don't think.

Morgan Freeman(Shawshank Redemption) 10

Brad Pitt (12 Monkeys, Kalifornia, Se7en) 5 (dont like him  )

Kevin Spacey(American Beauty, Usual Suspects) 10 he was great in negotiator

I don't have enough time to answer this in full, but Hanks (aside from MJFox) is the best actor of all time in my opinion;

Ed Norton and Kevin Spacey are also great. Also, Denzel Washington is great; "The Bone Collector" is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen (I was alone! It was dark! Stop looking at me weird!)

Morgan Freeman 10
Sean Penn- no rating, i don;t think i know him
Brad Pitt-5- girls like him too much
Denzel Washington-8-he was good in the hurricane and Malcom X
Tom Hanks-10-great in Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Cast Away.
Jimmy Stewart-no rating-don't know him
Russel Crowe-9- very good in gladiator, he looked strong even though he's got kind of a gut
Marlon Brando-10-great actor but he should not have been in the godfather. is he italian? if he is his name doesn't sound italian
Robert Deniro-10-love all his movies but Meeting the Parents
Edward Norton-9-good in fight club, seem like a hard part to play
Al Pacino-10-talented actor, very good in Scarface
Kevin Spacey-10-i guess he diserves credit, don't really know him though
