While I'm not a proponent of super loud bikes, Loud pipes on a Harley (or any big twin) serve a purpose.
I don't ride, but I have a lot of friends who do.
Quiet simply, Loud Pipes save Lives.
Bikes are hard to see, as evidenced by the number of idiots who make left turns in front of them, and end up getting plowed into, sending the rider flying over the car.
When you are thrown from a bike at 40MPH, your body doesn't care that you had the right of way.
It cares about getting to the nearest trauma unit, expeditiously.
At least if you hear the obnoxious rumble of a bike, maybe you'll look a bit harder for them in the traffic pattern.
I'd much rather hear them, and know to look for them, than to be surprised when I cut one off accidently.
And personally, I rather prefer Italian bikes, and British bikes.
There is nothing prettier than a big Laverda triple, or perhaps a Norton, or Triumph.
However, my mid-life crisis car will likely be some Mazda 6 in a loud color with the V6, A WRX, or (If I'm extremely lucky) and older Vette. But the first two are more in line with my "practical" lifestyle.
