I was talking to my downstairs neighbor about the upcoming Daytona 500 race, and the topic came around to road races. I told her that I would much rather watch a road race than a oval race -- too boring on the latter.

Anyway, she started telling me that Dale Earhardt Jr., was asked to race a course marked out on the streets of NY. My mind started racing as to the implications. She told me that part of his course took him past the Rockefeller Center. During his racing (about 10 laps or so), he blew out 2 windows on the NBC building too!

By now, I am frothing at the mouth!! She gets done telling me about this -- and I ask her where she found out about it. She went on to tell me that she read it possibly at NASCAR.com, or maybe somewhere else on the web. At this point I couldn't control my excitement anymore -- I tell here that GT4 is introducing a NY Road Course. I told her the general layout is Washington Circle --> Time Square --> 42nd St., -->then making it's way over towards Rockefeller Center and up to SE Central Park, then back over to Washington Circle.

She went on further to tell me, that he was asked to do this as if he were running a regular road course (like Watkins Glenn, in upstate NY), and that he was just doing it for a test.

As I sat there pondering the possibilities, it started to make logical sense, that he MAY HAVE BEEN doing it for GT4. Think about it, a real race car driver is asked to run a road course on the streets of NY, run it like he would any other road course -- and it just happens to take him past Time Square AND Rockefeller Center. To me, all of these things add up to it. She is going to do some digging (as well as I am) and see if we can confirm any of it. Look at the map in the Wallpaper section of this site, and pull up the NYC track -- then blow it up to see the street names -- too many similarities to pass out of hand!

I doubt it. First of all, GT4 is done, so testing right now, especially with a car that won't be in the game (unless PD has a surprise in store) seems pointless. And secondly, NASCAR has already done this before, where they drive their cars in downtown New York.

I live in NYC and I've never heard of, nor seen, of any streets being closed for a NASCAR (or any other) "race"/demo. NASCAR has been here with promo events but the city would never close streets to make a circuit...for anyone. Especially in midtown.

Not to mention it is Columbus Circle, not Washington Circle.....

First of all, whoever you are talking to is either an extravagant liar or just stupid.

Being an avid Nascar fan, the only thing that happened in new york similar to what you are talking about was the top 10 chase drivers (points finishers) paraded around the city, before the award banquet that night.

Dale jr did not blow out any windows in new york..lmao

I think someone has been watching too much italian job..

If this kid believes this BS then I have a bridge in brooklyn or a nice statue out in the harbor to sell him cheap....

I can almost see Jr. coming around into Rockefeller Plaza, dodging tourists from Iowa as he opposite locks the car infront of the Today show windows and take two out....

hahahaha.

I know Jr. is a gamer. I remember seeing a story about him last season on Speed on how he races anoymously online in some NASCAR and other SIm PC race games.

I'm suprised that no one mentioned the fact that NASCAR was horrible;)

Whoa, whoa, whoa...what is your problem dude? "...NASCAR was horrible..." Man, you really need to check your facts...NASCAR IS horrible...geez...people these days...

breaking windows by driving a car beside it....
i wonder how fast a car takes to do that without breaking the sound barrier.. :)
0 MPH ...

To break a window, you would only need the exhaust/engine to be loud enough at the window's resonant frequency, which you could do in Neutral at 0 MPH ...

Personally I think nascar is boring. Sure you hold in there and watch it because your secretly waiting for a crash. I like redline racing on public streets illegally better ;) .. just as long as their arent neons involed

I can corroborate this story, I was there when it happened (on top of the WTC) I distinctly heard the characteristic sonic boom as Dale passed.

Then I woke up.

No offence, but I doubt they would be able to close that many streets off just for Jr. to race.

DO you know how much traffic has to pass through those streets to go to work?

There is NO WAY that streets would EVER be closed in midtown for race cars without everyone in a 200 mile radius feeling the effects in traffic.

RE: NASCAR sucking....

I love road racing. I'm an avid F1 fan and follow the DTM, FIA touring cars, JGTC, etc etc. Even SCCA racing. I also follow NASCAR and a little bit of IRL. Ovals have their charm, though I do much prefer road racing. Oval racing is a very different beast all about slipstreaming and drafting...both very valid skills in motorsport.

and to Overclocked412;

If anything 'sucks" (and I hope you are kidding about what your street racing comment) it is stupid f$#@s like YOU who think the street is a race track and you have the right to endanger others with you street racing. .

With that attitude. You don't deserve the privilage of a driver's license, or insurance coverage...or even ownership of a vehicle. You have alot of growing up to do little boy.

How interesting can the race be when the track is just 1/4 mile straightaway?

Do NOT quote this! I do enjoy drag racing. This was directed at the post above this one as sarcasm.

Ugh, I hate NASCAR ...

1) While it's untrue that "NASCAR requires no skill," the car setup is much more important to doing well in NASCAR than skill, IMO ... That being said, many LeMans champions haven't done too well in NASCAR (e.g. Ron Fellows) and vica versa (Dale Earnhardt Jr.) ...

2) Oval tracks are so boring ... I don't really enjoy watching a car go around in a big circle for 2 hours straight ...

3) NASCAR fans ...
They ... cheer ... crashes ...
It's just sickening ...
Finding crashes entertaining is one thing ... but to actually encourage and cheer crashes is another ...
Also, their anti-import beliefs and refusal to accept that a car with more torque isn't necessarily faster is quite frustrating to me ... Physics is their enemy :P

It was Overclocked412 that made the Street Racing comment. People like him need to have their drivers license taken away. 👎 Before they kill someone.

Though he definitely could've blown out a window or two at 2.32mph in NYC in traffic (the city *does* sleep, BTW - it was dead at 4:00am when I used to drive through mid-town to get to work - I guess he could've done it then), he didn't.

We would've heard about it, because about 18 different housing boards, the tenants, nine businesses and the city of New York would've already filed lawsuits. ;)

Street racing is retarded ...

Unless of course you enjoy needlessly endangering the lives of innocent people for completely immature and reckless "reasons" ...

We don't need to start a flame war on this guy, we all know it's illegal and righly so and the point has been made. Arguing the matter here won't change anything.

Actually, the power of the cars is different from the car drive. It isn't exactly easy driving with a crowd of 180Mph with 43 cars on course such as the one course in Nascar that is very small. (Bristol?)

And BTW, Earnhardt Jr. actually did do well in the Rolex 24 racing the LeMans Corvette. The team won 1st place.

But the Rolex 24hr isn't the LeMans 24hr which is what Jmac meant. I agree NASCAR requires a lot of skill and balls, but like many over this side of the pond, I can't watch it, it's not interesting enough imo.

..keep in mind theres a HUGE difference between "stupid" and just plain boring to watch...

yall hate it.. yes it can be boring but that doesnt make it a bad sport, people spend tons of money and time to win those races..

there was a nascar parked at time square few days ago, i saw it from far away but didnt go up to it coz i was rushing to get to 9th period

They did it for Tom Cruise...Vanilla Sky? Remember? If your a celebrity, there isn't much they won't do, if the right amount of money is involved :)
