Recently I've come to the realization that I need a hobby, and whats better then picking up my old one from when I was a teenager? I should be getting my tax refund any day now, and with that it gives me about $500 to spend on what I'd like.

As a kid, all my stuff was bought by my parents, so I never really got around to searching on my own, or moving on from the bass I had, as I had no income. With that said, I do not know what flaws I should be keeping an eye out for when purchasing one, so that is why I'm posting here. I originally had an Ibanez Semi-hollow body, which is still at my moms, but I handed it down to my little brother when I moved out. Right now I'm thinking of picking up a Epiphone Thunderbird, as its within my price range, and I've always wanted one.

I'm actually going to guitar center this weekend, so if anyone has any recommendations that are within my price range, let me know, and I'll check them out :)

Also check out the Squier basses. Great bang for the buck. For more upscale basses check out some active ones. It might be a hassle to have to buy batteries but I've played with one (can't remember the brand) in the studio and I was impressed. It comes with three eq knobs that offer great versatility and that thing has a great definition to the notes.

Also playtest a fretless if you have the chance, IMHO the learning curve is worth the smooth vocal sound.

Will do. I've been stuck on the Thunderbird for about a decade now, so its going to be hard to pry me from that. Still, that's the whole reason I'm going, To see what I'd like.

The learning curve is always what scared me about the fretless basses. I'm not sure how much of a problem it'll be but I don't know how to read music, I always just went off sound.

I'm a guitar player but I'd happily buy a fretless bass if I had the money. For example how can you not love this?

I think I'll stay away from that for now. I haven't played an instrumen since 2007-2008, I'd rather get back into the grove first.
