Does the iphone have native flac support yet?
It doesn't look like it - that .50 cal did a pretty good number on it. :P

FLAC isn't listed in the supported formats but it looks like there's an app for that.

Thanks, just wasn't sure if it was native or via an app.

Cheers Shaun.

If an iPod could do it...

Correction. iPod plus body armor. :D

I'm sure this has been mentioned before, and in excruciating detail, but I got my first taste of Apple Maps.

Dear God is it inadequate. It can't find anything! Inexcusable, considering the guys who programmed it are supposed to be second only to Garmin in terms of map software.

Meanwhile, on Android, you can get free maps that work very, very, very well.

Yeah, the search in maps is pretty pathetic right now. Honestly, the mapping errors will probably all be fixed in the next update, but it's gonna be a while before they can compete with Google's search ability. It's still better than the stock nav system in my Civic was, though, haha. That thing was ridiculously bad, it'd have multiple branches of the same chain spread into 20 different categories and you'd have to search them all to find the one you were looking for. (Like with Costco - you'd have to check "Groceries", "Department Stores", "Gas Stations", "Shopping Center", "Wholesale", "Retail", "Retail + Tires", "Retail + Groceries" and a whole bunch of other similar things, and each category would only have two or three Costcos in it!) It was, however, awesome for finding all the Ramen places in the South Bay area of LA. (Honda USA is based in Torrance, haha.)

At least the good news is that Google Maps is coming soon as a download, and I bet it'll have turn-by-turn. So we'll have to option of using which one we want. I will say that I was pretty pleased with the new Maps app as a navigation app once you've found your destination - it's incredibly fast to come up with a route, accurate, and the directions are clear and logical. I hear it's hard to look for upcoming directions but I generally don't mess with nav while driving.

As for FLAC - I hate to admit it but I don't really get the point. High-bitrate MP3s and especially AACs already provide sound as good as most moderately-priced headphones can deliver. It's nice at home with high-end phones and a good amp but on a mobile device, with background noise, and especially when played through a car stereo, it seems like overkill, and takes up a ton of storage space.

Pretty much this, but here's the catch for me. I have hundred's upon hundred's of cd's and lp's ripped to flac. I don't want to convert them all again to listen to them on my phone (good news you can now on iphone via an app). I simply drag and drop them onto my phone and I'm good to go.

High quality music on the go isn't a priority for me, so much so that I just use the crap earbuds that come with my phone. It's a convenience thing for me.

Home is a different story though, the difference between flac and mp3's is there to hear, well for me anyway and I never listen to music at home through headphones.

Cheers Shaun.

Did you guys hear about the big scratches that people were getting? Ooohhhh...

Ya I saw a vid where a lady gave her kid keys and just told her to hit it and roll them on the back of it. She wiped it after and there were scratches everywhere. Someone emailed apple about this and one of the head guys emailed back just saying is coated aluminum and that's a normal thing that happens when it gets scratched. The worst pry is its not even a scratch its takin off the coating but underneath is shiny metal so all your scratches will shine. Makes it so obvious. Still better than the glass since it can't break and is stronger but having it all scratched from day to day things like putting it on a table or carrying them in your pocket with other stuff isn't really that great.

Agreed. If I search for Luton (a fairly large town) then it gives me Luton in Devon, a tiny village. And searching for Luton Airport gives me the central bus station in Milton Keynes. Useless thing.

Yeah but, how many people won't use a protective case of some sorts!

I absolutely hate cases on my devices, so I certainly wouldn't get a case. It sounds like something in the chain of command got mixed up at Apple regarding this coating though.

You can download free maps that work really well on the iPhone too. I never thought much of Google maps on the iPhone anyway, it always showed me some off the wall route to get somewhere. I use MapQuest, it works like a charm.

I will agree though the Apple Maps are horrid.

This is how I am, one of the nice things about the iPhone is it's design, I don't really want to add any bulk to it.

I don't like case's all that much either, but if I were to get one for my 4S it would be one of those thin ones that mainly protect against back scratching.

Anyway, mine normally goes naked.

I would say the majority of people are just as excited to get a new case for their phone than the phone itself. There are a ton of cool ones I have seen however for me I don't see the point of a case. The front glass is strong and they made it as slim and light as possible and now you are gonna put a big case of it which bulks it up and makes it heavier as well as totally hides their nicely designed phone. This goes for all phones. How looks like I'll be forced to get a case for this iPhone since if I get scratches on it I will snap.

Luckily I found this site http://www.slickwraps.com/ which gives you the same stickers that they put on cars for racing stripes etc so it will protect from scratches and look good but most importantly to me not add any more size or weight

Also latest news for google maps is apple never told google they were dropping their maps and they found out when it was announced just like all of us. Also google may not have a app submit waiting to be approved yet as they didn't have that much time so a stand alone app may be out months from now. Finally apple liked google maps but wanted them to make it as good as tr android versions with turn by turn. Google declined so apple was forced to make their own version of maps. Google is reportedly working on their app to be a combo of google maps and google earth. Which would make it the ultimate maps tool ever. For those angry just go to maps.google.com and use maps there rather than a stand alone app. Basically the same thing.

Personally I only get a case if it stands out and looks awesome while protecting my phone from impact damage if there is that one day that I slip on the phone. This is the reason why I've bought a fishbone style case for my Nexus(they have a version for the iphone 5):

It looks cool to me and it most importantly makes the phone easier to hold in the hands with the black silicone and the white soft plastic to help avoid a drop.

I could only get about half way through it. The misspellings were killing me. Iphone, Ipod, Ipad and IOS, instead of, iPhone, iPod, iPad and iOS was irritating.

I've read it through twice and didn't even notice until you pointed it out!. have no idea how it would stop someone from reading the full article though, it's hardly a novel...

Well Iphone user have money usually, so if they really need a gps there is still stuff like Tom-Tom or other navigation system. As long as it's not the GPS chips that is not working proprely there is nothing to worry about really.

I've got a sat nav in my car but I use my phone if I'm on foot or if I need to look up a location. It came in very useful recently when my colleague's car got a flat in the middle of nowhere. We were able to find and navigate to the nearest tyre shop in a matter of seconds. 👍

My best friend just bought it for 800€ from the Apple Store next town.
Had a scuffgate

Oh, Apple. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the S4 (not starting an unneccesary 🤬 fight about Samsung vs. Apple, I like both phones)

Its simple,

Apple wants to have turn by turn and google wasnt ready to give it to them and so Apple decided to go thier own way and produce the dog that is Apple Maps.

I just kind of question Apple as they are wasting a years worth of licensing for use of Google Maps.

Are we sure that its Apple that didnt want Google maps ? Rather than google not wanting them to use it since now Android is related to Google ?

Honestly, the only thing I've really noticed with this update is that everything is taking slightly longer to load. Did I drop my phone on its head during the critical update development phase?

It's not that simple, the maps feature is integrated heavily into everything the phone does from recommending places to purchase items to cataloging photos, to notifying you that your friends are nearby. Google maps will help you navigate indoors, it helps you look up business phone numbers or email addresses... it very intentionally couples with many of the features of the phone.

One could almost say that maps are quickly becoming the backbone of the phone - which is why Apple wanted to take it in house. I think they made a reasonable long-term business decision on that, but they're WAY behind and their product wasn't ready for release.

Pretty sure I read that a large percentage of Googles income comes from iOS. Google even presents a popup to inform you how to put Google Maps on you home screen when you access maps.google.com from your iDevice. :D Even though it's just a link to the webapp, it's still a hundred times better than Apples attempt.

Apple wanted one of Google's main competitive assets available on their device, but without giving Google the benefits of the system that they would enjoy on an Android handset (Location and user information to enable targeted advertising, aswell as stand-out Google branding). They were trying to get Google to give full satnav direction functionality but weren't willing to compromise on anything else; Google tried, but they're not going to give it away without something in return.

What happened was a business negotiation fell through because either side was willing to budge. I can't say I blame Google considering the huge amount they have invested in the likes of Streetview. Apple still has the dominant market position, not by numbers but by prestige. It is still the most sought after smartphone and also the most expensive mainstream phone and flagship device.

Spot on, Apple wanted something Google wanted something in return, Apple didn't want to give it, Google said no to the other stuff. Just big children, but that's business.

My iPhone 5 has arrived.
