Is it me, or is Adele Overrated?

No doubt, she has a great voice, but it ends there. Her style isn't really anything new, kinda sounds like 30 Seconds to Mars and an American Idol competition shoved together. Her lyrics aren't that good either and after a while, you would think that a wolf is howling through your speakers. Your opinions? Am I just weird, or do you think she is overplayed and overrated?

YES. No her voice is terrible. I hate her "noise" and IDK how people can listen to that stuff.

She is indeed overrated. I do radio presenting for a living and after listening to her songs drone on and on, I'm sick of her.

That noise. That 1 track they keep playing, it's one long moan. That was absolute torture, glad it's fallen out of the charts. Let us never hear it again, any and all things adele.

All she does is make me long for the days when a crap load of good music came out of England(Not that the U.S. is any better cough*Ladyman Gaga*cough).

I for one think she's good, this is coming from someone who mainly likes metal, my favourate bands being Alterbridge, A7X, one minute silence, ect.

If you listen carefully to her album it is very good, the problem I think is what I call the 'nickleback effect', how many of us loved 'how you remind me' before it was played over, and over again until we all hated it?

That's my theory

She makes me grateful that more than one radio station exists - long live Planet Rock! She does my head in with her music for dramatic housewives, absolute trash at it's peak.

Don't really much care for Adele. But you could find A LOT worse than her. Actually, as far as top 40 goes, she's probably one of the better artists on the charts.

I'm not a fan of the kind of music she writes and performs as I like bands such as Avenged Sevenfold or Rise against, but as much as I don't want to admit it, she has some absolutely amazing songs and a beautiful voice. If anything, I think she is underrated by many. Even after hearing "Someone like you" a billion times it just doesn't get old for me for whatever reason. I'm not a fan of "Rolling in the Deep" though. :yuck:

The only time I ever really heard her was when I was at a bar and it was karaoke night and one of the bartenders sang Rolling in the deep.. She wasn't bad although I was drunk.. Oh wait were talking about the music? :P

I had never heard any of this Adele's music. I just listened. It's different, and she has a different voice, and it's not something I'd recommend or regularly listen to. But she's alright. Her higher notes are a little strained of lack a little in power. But that's only in one or two lines. At some points she needs to be louder too considering the notes she is using.

She's probably overrated but I don't know.

Hopefully like Gabrielle Cilme or whatever her name was, she fades away never to be heard of again, it took ages for her annoying & abused track to go away too.

Yep, she's definitely over-rated.
And please, no offence, but don't mention her in the same paragraph/thread/topic/site as 30 Seconds to Mars. :D :D :D

Ditto.

One reason I switched to classic rock is so I don't have so many people's talentless voice clogging my mind up...

LMFAO is also stupidly overrated with their weird "Party Rock Anthem" thing, can't stand that song.

I completely agree, I monumentally hate that song. :grumpy:

I like Adele, but can not say why.

I agree her songs are not a great revolution in music.
I agree her voice can be annoying (actually I read she does not like it herself, she likes Beyonce).

So yes, people generally portray her in a way I think is overrated, but for me the radio is better with then without her.

LMFAO with "Party Rock Anthem" I find refreshing as well.

Both are not my favorites, but I'm OK with them.

You cant lie, she does have a voice. Hear is how i think of some artists, especially the Top 40 ones. I dont care for the music played on radios in general, i like to wait for some of the artists i like to do a remix of those said songs. :D

like, a dubstep remix lol

Flat as in voice wise.

Why what were you thinking I meant? :odd:

Uhhh - don't agree with that at all.

I wouldn't say she's overrated at all, but she is certainly overplayed.

Musically some of her stuff is also very interesting to play, in particular 'Don't you remember', great chord progressions and a nice key change at the end.

She is constantly flat- which in itself doesn't sound bad due to the consistency, but every so often she hits a note that really grates on the ear due to the fact that she is flat.

She can certainly belt out a good song, but there are some far more technically superior artists out there.

Just my opinion though. 👍

Well personally, I hate mainstream music to begin with. I had heard a song of Adele's but didn't know that was her. When I was at my dad's on New Years day, he turned on the tv and she was on it.

My brother in law made some stupid comment about how "A girl that age can sing so well" to which I replied that there are classically trained singers that can sing far better. Then there are opera singers, so a pop singer in general is not impressive to me. Certainly not anything special anyway.

Back to Adele, I despise pop music and she is no different. At least it's someone who can sing without the need of autotune though. In my opinion, she is overrated like the majority of popular music. When people look to idiotic dj's who only play their station's pre-approved playlist to tell them what's "cool" then it's a bad sign as far as I'm concerned. I've been subjected to the likes of radio one at work before. This is radio one fodder and doesn't interest me in the slightest.

You are aware I take it that Adele has effectively been adopted by the mainstream only after here last album. Prior to that she was pretty much ignored by them and at the very least is not the product of a TV show.

Getting her record deal after a friend posted three tracks on myspace for her.

Just because something gets airplay doesn't automatically make it dismissable, that kind of approach is not better than only thinking something is cool because a DJ says so.

Dislike something for a real reason, not just because it gets played on the radio, an act that is very often not within the artists control.

Sometimes, when I hear it, I think that she has formed into a werewolf and is howling... her voice is kinda annoying after a while. Or, maybe I've been playing too much Skyrim..

In my opinion, the only reason that she is being played on the radio is because her voice is kinda impressive and because its different from the LMFAO crap. However, I have found her style not to be unique to be kinda similar to 30 Seconds to Mars..... Not saying that 30STM is bad, but every artist should have their own style.

I was not aware of how she broke into the mainstream. But my point still stands. Whatever the mainstream crowd buys, I generally dislike. Her music is not my cup of tea. My judgement is not based on the fact that she is a mainstream artist, Iron Maiden are still one of the biggest bands on earth and I love them. However, her music does not appeal to me, like the rest of the stuff you would find on a radio one playlist. I'd rather listen to her than Chris Moyles though.

That's different to how your original post came across, which was a blanket dismissal of anything that got onto mainstream radio, and while I would agree that the majority of 'popular' music is just poorly packaged noise (and this is the way its always been).

Your comment originally came across as from the 'now they are in the charts I hate them' school, which is a concept I can't abide, now that you've clarified things I can rest a bit easier.

With regards to the OP, Yeah i do think she's a tad bit overrated... not saying she's talentless though, i agree with Scaff too, that it's not necessarily the artists fault to being overplayed on the radio... but in general, i tend to hate pop music (also can't stand radio 1 and it's ilk), i think a good example of why i feel this way about pop music in general, would be for me to give an example: i used to love the early 'Black eyed peas' stuff (1st album).. but as they took a more mass appeal approach, i felt the music integrity suffered for it, basically can't stand them now...

As for Adele.. can't say i hate her style entirely, but i much prefer the sound of Zaki Ibrahim or even Nikka Costa... both remind me of that style of singing in a way (though i'm sure many will disagree).
