Is it me, or is Adele Overrated?Music

i agree with Scaff too, that it's not necessarily the artists fault to being overplayed on the radio...

That wasn't the point I intended to make. However, now that I have a chance to bash radio 1, I had the misfortune of having to listen to a song called "stars in their eyes" by an "artist" called "just jack" four times a day for three months. :ouch:

Her music isn't really my cup of tea and I did feel that she was overrated, especially the way the radio kept banging on about her and playing tracks non stop.

The thing that changed my view was seeing her live performance at the royal albert hall on TV. Even though its not really to my taste hats off to her for having a great voice which really conveys the emotion (at least live). I still find the change from singing voice to talking voice quite startling, its like suddenly Alan Carr's on stage

Robin.

I think her voice is rather nice, actually. To be honest, I only heard of her last week.

Decent range, but I don't listen to enough radio to assume it's overplayed yet. (I'll have to guess that with a thread about her here, it probably is. Can't fault the artist for that.)

I dont like her songs but thats because of the style i like. Her voice is amazing!

-Pupik- how have u not heard of her!? You must live under a rock

Sometimes, when I hear it, I think that she has formed into a werewolf and is howling... her voice is kinda annoying after a while. Or, maybe I've been playing too much Skyrim..

In my opinion, the only reason that she is being played on the radio is because her voice is kinda impressive and because its different from the LMFAO crap. However, I have found her style not to be unique to be kinda similar to 30 Seconds to Mars..... Not saying that 30STM is bad, but every artist should have their own style.

First time I've heard 30 Seconds to Mars and hopefully the last. His voice is annoying as hell, that whole singing in a whisper is over done. Music was dull too.. Adele is meh for me, she has some interesting rhythms but its not the kind stuff I listen to on a daily basis.

Her voice is fantastic, but she is definitely overplayed. As is Florence & The Machine lately, which is a real shame as I've seen her live and it was stunning.

Lana Del Ray is also at risk of becoming overplayed now that her album is out. It's a very very good album though, as are Adele's albums.

...how have u not heard of her!? You must live under a rock

Radio is convenient device that has an AUX port for my iPod.
TV is a box for watching F1 races, football, and basketball.
Internet is a device for adjusting GTPlanet and a few other sites.
Movies are things I don't have time for anymore.
Video games are a thing that lets me shoot birds at pigs on my phone.

I don't get out much, pop-culture-wise...But I do travel, and have a family of my own.

Ah, the joys of members not realising that people have families and not everyone listens to pop music! I only know of her because we're forced to listen to pop radio at work.

Yes a Dell's is overrated, HP's is where it's at.

Oh wait you mean the singer. I wouldn't say she's overrated, maybe overplayed but not overrated. I think she sings decently well and her songs make some pretty good remixes, actually I think she'd be pretty good for vocal trance if she got hooked up with a DJ.

I also never really understood why people instantly hate something that's mainstream, I mean that the bases for hipsters and hipster do not make any sense what-so-ever. It's actually kind of nice when someone goes mainstream that can sing straight up without auto-tune or whatever else digital altering they do.

I do wish they'd start playing more of her songs though instead of those two that are always on, having listened to her lastest album I think she has songs that have way more potential then the ones out now.

I'm feel sorry for you :indiff:

I don't mind pop music really. It gets annoying when the radio overplays one song but I'm not a music snob and I quite enjoy a good bit of pop music to sing along to!

Yeah, they are playing her non stop and although I like her music the radio is doing its very best to make me get fed up of it!

Strange as it may sound, Dave Grohl agrees with you

I feel sorry for you :indiff:

I personally hate mainstream music because most of it is stupidly overrated for something that requires no talent, IMO.
Then hate stupidly overrated, no talent music.

I've never understood hating an entire genre or subsection of music based on how some of it sounds. Take country music, most of it is (to my ears) utter dross, written to a formula designed to shift units. However if you dismiss all country for that, then you miss out on Johnny Cash, and that alone should be a reason to be a little more open minded.

I think that's been part and parcel of the music industry for years; why play the most of the album for free over the airwaves when you need to sell quantity?

There was a phase of this with some artists, I recall Janet Jackson had something like 6-7 number one hits from a single album, some 20+ years ago. That just won't happen anymore, and the music distribution models changing towards releasing a single(s) between albums, it's even less likely than before.

That doesn't mean I don't agree with you, but I think record labels prefer to pigeonhole artists somewhat.

Personally, I don't believe in music made after 1983. It's just not what it used to be. So today you can talk down a mic, and become famous. No musical instrument talent needed. Hoorah. Back then, if you pulled that crap, you'd be kicked out on the street!

Just my 2 cents

Your missing out on a lot of damn good music (all with people playing their own instruments) in that case.

Just glad I don't feel the same, particularly given that plenty of music pre-83 was just as poor.

How often do you see the LEAD SINGERS THEMSELVES playing an instrument in the modern day, now eh? How often do you hear of good lyrics instead of some chick whining because her boyfriend left her?

Sure, there are some modern people out there with musical talent left. The majority doesn't though.

Uhh plenty.

Radiohead
The Black Keys
White Stripes
Jace Everett
Jack Penate
Alter Bridge
Hugh Laurie
Snow Patrol

And that's just the stuff (well at least 3/4 of it) that's sat on top of my turntable right now.

Most of that is rock, I think the discussion here is pop

All of that (Except Hugh Laurie, which reminds me I need to listen to his new album) is played on Radio 1 daytime to my knowledge. I'm quite sure that makes you "pop" regardless of what other genre you could place them in.

They play this song on the radio,
Again
And again
And again
Again
Again
Again
Again
:banghead:

And there's this other one that sounds like her and it sounds like her but I don't know the lyrics or name. Which gets played even more! Radio has like 6 songs!

To tell you the truth...I have no idea what any of that means...

No the discussion here is music made after 1983, as you said...

Oh and you would have to stretch a lot to to describe these....

Radiohead
Jace Everett
Jack Penate
Hugh Laurie

as rock. A lot.

Bloody great album, if you've not yet got it, go for the limited edition as the DVD is well worth watching.

Also look back now, I said MOST. You only named a few, and there are a heck of a lot more bands than that.

50% of that list is not rock in any way and a few of the others would be borderline (Snow Patrol in particular), none of which changes what you opened with....

...a blanket statement regarding all music post 83 (which does beg the question why '83), and seriously I could post a list of bands post '83 that display a huge level of "musical instrument talent" that would quite frankly be embarrassing.

To be blunt you've dug that hole, keep going if you wish.

The simple truth of the matter is that no matter what decade you pick, the majority of mainstream music has been bland formulaic dross, post 83 is no better of worse that pre 83. More than enough musical talent has emerged post 83, that you don't wish to burst this bizarre little bubble is a shame.

What sort of music are you into and maybe we can suggest some stuff that might change your mind.

That's too true, I like old music, even do woop from the 50's.

Back in the DAY music. I'm 16. I hate most rap.

Radio 1 is a BBC radio station, aimed at 15-29 year olds. In the daytime it is mostly light talk-radio and mainstream music. In the evening it has shows aimed at unsigned bands, dance music and varying genres of Rock.

I think the issue here is your ignorance of contemporary music and using that to form your opinion. Never a good method.

Do 16 yr olds still do that thing where they worship Kurt Cobain for 6 months, exhaust Nirvana's discography and then decide they like contemporary music again?

Classis rock is the only thing I believe in...

The Gaslight Anthem's third album American Slang may well do the job. They all play 'real' instruments (yes even the lead singer), with a solid set of lyrics and some solid riffs in the vein of classic rock.
