Is the nurburgring too narrow?

I guess i'm losing sight of what we are duscussing here, is it that the 'ring is narrow generally, or that it is narrower than it should be in GT5? Because it is clearly not a wide track in "real life", it's narrow as hell in some places.

Also is it used much as a racetrack anyway? Or was it in the past? What type of races are/were run there?

I guess i'd figured it was pretty much a test track, and an awesome one, agreed.

**EDIT** And I am referring specifically to the Nordschleiffe, I am well aware of the GP track =)

The original question was about GT5 vs real life, but it's evolved into a general discussion about the track.

As for info on the track itself:

Nurburgring Nordschleife

When talking about the narrowness of the 'ring, would it not be sensible to say that it is actually how it should be in real life. Seeing how PD digitally map the whole track inch by inch there is not really any way to say that it 'too narrow' or is any different to the RL track.
If you're talking about the screen image or the way it's imposed on the TV then this post is not to be taken notice of.

It only seems narrow online, when everyone seems to always drive in the middle of the road. Especially if they're slower traffic.

The funny thing is ... I think the Nordschleife is perfectly done in GT4 as well as GT5. To me, it looks exactly like in the videos. If you look at the side-by-side comparisons, it looks on the spot correct.

And yet, when I was driven around the Nordschleife for the first time not too long ago, I noticed that the whole track seems wider to my eyes than it is in the game.

I think what you ned to remember is that a cars dashboard in real life will look/seem wider than on the game as well and it's all down to the picture being condensed down to fit on your 42 inch or whatever size tv screen. To get the feel exactly right you'll need a perfectly sized tv screen and you'll need to sit the perfect distance away from it

I didn't know that. Would explain that but I think the OP is more on that the track is narrower in game than it is in real life.

You know, you might be right. Also, the track seems to be about 20% cooler in real life versus the game...tires grip like no other, I don't think it's like that in Nurburg.

The nurburgring is a very demanding track. The surface appears to be too grippy in the game for sure.

Not when on Comfort Mediums/Soft with all aids off, seems just right to me.

Just a thought...the Nurburgring was built for motorcycles originally which would explain why it is too narrow for some cars.
No, it wasn't.

I believe the first race was a motorcycle race but the Nordschleife was made as a home for the ADAC Eifelrennen races which were motorcycles one day, touring cars the next, and racing cars the next day. Up until the Nurburgring track complex was built, those races were held on public roads. So the Nordschleife was designed for both cars and bikes.

Nordschleife width = perfect on PS3. Looks waaaay to wide on Forza 4. GT5 has the most accurate Nurburgring track of any racing game

You're probably playing with grip loss set to low and not realistic. The track isn't very wide in real life as I have watched many videos of cars driving across it and it's actually a two way road and the width varies throughout the entire course. This is a road and not a race track, so it is not uniform, has lots of off camber turns which cause cars to be skittish under throttle. I love tearing around that course on SS and lower, you really feel nervous as you don't have overwhelming grip like the Race tires.

Nurburgring is pretty close to real life, from the on board videos I have seen.

Forzas seems too wide, GTs seems a little too narrow. GT is probably closer though. Either way, the Nordschleife is very narrow to begin with so making it narrower won't spoil the simulation as much as making it wider to be honest.

IMHO the narrowness is just right for racing. The length along with the narrowness of the track makes it great for exploiting another drivers mistakes when behind and forces you to drive flawlessly or risk having your mistake exploited when in front.

Along the lines of "if it's too loud you're too old," "if it's too narrow you're too slow."

Since 2010 i race the VLN championship professionally and its held twice a month at the nurburgring and i can assure you, that GT5's version of Nordschleife is the most accurate version i have seen in a game!

Well, since you're a man who's been around the circuit properly nice to know you think it's accurate.

Bet the 4hs isn't accurate though. I mean, you didn't see any S2k Turbo's in the lineup over there, right?! The 24hs race is terrible in GT5, you get LMP's for top competitors rather than GT3 level cars. Speaking of the 24hs the Manthey Porsche wouldn't be bad to add to the game (not that it can be added of course being a Porsche :indiff:)

Nope, I think it is very close to real thing. Kaz has driven there and they spend lot of time in getting the details right. It is verry accurate

Oh great video

RE: Forza's version. It is too wide, but Turn 10 said it was and didn't hide that fact. Basically, they wanted to make the track fun to race online so widened it slightly.

And they call themselves sim developers. Pfffft. Well, this is what the track si like, very demanding. Do you think the track is too tough for players? Yeah, lets widen it to help them. If only real life worked like that.

It is quite narrow in certain spots. My least favorite race in GT5 was the Nascar race at Nurburgring. If there are two Nascar stock cars side-by-side, one of them most likely has two wheels in the grass, lol!

It makes passing on that track very interesting...

Funny.....that is actually my FAVORITE event. But I'm a NASCAR fan, road courses have always been my favorite NASCAR races to watch, and I've been racing NASCAR cars on road courses (and short tracks) since NASCAR 98 on N64. It's such a shame that Watkin's Glen and the NASCAR layout for Infineon aren't in GT5. Those would be all I race, but since they aren't, I have to deal with the tracks the game has.

Luckily Suzuka is actually a track NASCAR used to go to in real life back in the 90's. SO I can tell myself that's a NASCAR track irl at least. But NASCAR cars on the Nurburgring, to me is just incredible. A really great race. And for people who don't know NASCAR , stock cars are actually REALLY good on road courses, not just in games but IRL as well. Hence Marcos Ambrose and Montoya not doing very good on ovals (tho they're getting better), but every time NASCAR goes to a road course they're up at the front. (Tho JPM is WAY too hot headed and ends up wrecking people and himself)
