K1 Speed Challenge GP: How I am preparing for the 2016 edition of GT Academy

I'm glad to see you getting out there and preparing sk8er, I actually had a similar idea myself (though more for my own amusement) to run in a league at my (currently) local kart place, Andretti's, but unfortunately my summer job made that impossible, as I had to work on the Monday nights that they held the races.

I've finally found some time to make this overdue post!

So a few weeks ago I visited a comparable indoor track in Haverhill, MA, called Checkered Flag Karting. Walking in, they had all my favorite tracks, in the form of those cool Track Sculptures, hanging on the wall. Then you enter in to the main area, full with an arcade and even food stand. It had similar top level racing murals, with F1, NASCAR, Indy Car, etc. all being displayed. So basically, just like K1, even down to the $35-for-3 races pricing. Big difference was the track was literally about a 12-15s lap if you were quick enough. K1, at least in Poughkeepsie, as I posted earlier, is closer to 20-25s.

So, the track was shorter, and I swear the karts were slower too. It could have been they put the karts on lower speeds though. Both me and the girl [I'm dating] were duking it out, but we still were 1-2s off the fastest people there. Even when we realized 95% could be taken full throttle, the pace wasn't there, and the karts just didn't feel quite as fast as they did at K1.

They even emailed me the results of each race, something K1 mentioned, but didn't follow through on.

Here's what they sent me. This is just from the 3rd race. They gave me this data on all 3.

Had a great time even though I wasn't the hotshot of the day.

My next karting experience will be either one of two things, maybe even both eventually. One potential experience will be renting out a SKUSA TaG level kart for an open track day. I found a local guy who sells them, and long story short, I'm just waiting for a call from him to tell me he and one of his karts are available. From there we'll work out a price (likely a couple hundred dollars) and a date (he mentioned Tuesdays). I'm really hoping this happens!

The other option is try out F1 Boston! This place has 2 tracks, and even has some fairly serious leagues. It's a bit more expensive, with the 3 race bundle running...$80! But I'm sure it will be the best indoor experience I'd ever get, at least for many years. It's not much of a trip (about 1-1.5hrs), so I just need to find a good weekend, and make sure I can take the increase of price.

Heh. I just made my way back up to the Boston area and I had eyed those two tracks previously. I think I might stop by F1 one of these days if I can make the trip. Those prices are no joke though.

Yes, with big city fun comes big city pricing! Even if the experience is similar to what you can get elsewhere, it will still cost you 2-3x as much! Only exception I know is if you go to, say a punk show or something obscure. Those small-time things tend to be reasonable.

Well it is racing, even karts aren't cheap.

Due to mechanical failure on the outlap, I got 4th. Should've gotten 2nd or 3rd.

Edit: but still, my best finish and best lap, and probably best average too. Ill update the OP 'soon.' It's almost 4 am right now though... So maybe tomorrow. :) I'll have pictures of me to upload too! I also have a scoring sheet from a public session, wow those drivers were bad!

20 hp electric engine sounds extremely quick and fun.
Good luck!

I have a good story about that today. :D My kart was lagging on the outlap, majorly off pace, then when I while I was cornering quite sharply, they turned off the speed limiter. The rear wheels lost traction in a ms, and I went 'slideways' around the corner before the start finish line.

I'm entering late into the Challenge GP as I've been racing at the Torrance location for a while. Trying to brush up for GT Academy 2016 as well.

I've been in a bit of a slump, but maybe the heightened competiton will help! 👍

I haven't won a race yet, I have bad luck with the karts... there's only one race for challenge GP left and I don't think I'll return in January.

Don't know how big you are vs. your competitors but even a small weight difference matters in karting. Back when I raced I was a couple of years older than my brother, and held 2 class track records in Ontario. First time out in my 2 stroke kart (he was in the slower 4 stroke classes), 25 pounds lighter, he takes 3/10ths off my track record without breaking a sweat. The lighter you are the faster your potential lap time and there's nothing you can do about it if they are of equal talent.

From someone who has raced karts for a number of years generally speaking 10kg is meant to be worth between 2-3 tenths if you believe what people say.

Well you can't change physics so more weight = slower time, assuming equal skillsets of course. Of course I immediately excluded the possibility that my little brother could be faster than me:)

Im pretty light, but I dont fit in the seat well, because I am long and skinny. It could be a weight distribution thing...?

Doubt it but you never know. Just wanted to throw the weight thing out there in case it's an issue. If you're 160 and the guy running the fastest times is 130, it could have a lot to do with why you can't close a 0.3 gap. Have to remember too, they are rental karts that get used and abused and they aren't all equal, no matter what they tell you.

@Neovre suggested I try gokart racer because they are more consistent. Then I found out they do 3 hour endurance races. :D im ready! Just need to put a team together lol.

I weigh 125 lbs... pretty damn light, maybe I just need more and more practice. It was my first time, anyways.

142.5 ish here so I'm pretty light especially for my height.

edit: I notice a lot more difference in the karts hp and tires than I do weight differences. The time difference between karts is as high as 4%, that's not acceptable for spec racing.

What is gokart racer?

Not sure if they have something like this in your area but this will actually give you a much more relevant experience that you can use to train for GTAcademy. The karts are much, much faster, tracks are way bigger, and it's more like a real circuit, not surrounded by barriers like you are indoors. I ran at Cameron a few years ago and it was quite fun, quite well organized and the rules made it very safe as well. It was cheap back then, not sure about now. I think I paid around $550 for an entire year, which included 10 race weekends (practice, 2 heats and a main). All I needed was a helmet, gloves and leathers which I already had and neck protection. The indoor electric karts are fun, but nowhere near as fast and the surface doesn't really mimic real outdoor grip levels, tire heating etc. You can actually draft pass too.

Watch the brilliant over/under pass at 4:15 and then using the whole track at 4:30 for better exit speed and a pass on the following straight:

Jeez, looking at that video makes me want to race too:lol:. Long drive for me though, 3.5 hours:ouch:

3.5 hours is a long time. I want to race  GKRs karts aren't electric ^. Theres Sonoma raceway, but I'm not sure what their program is like.

These karting places are great. I have one near me in Newark called Pole Position. This wasn't the first time I have ever been to karting place but it was a lot of fun.

They started me out in a slower group and then moved me into a faster one. I probably did 5 or 6 races altogether and I was slowly working my way up to one of the regular's times. Unfortunately, it gets expensive really fast so I try to stick to virtual practice.

They have leagues here that meet regularly and they dial the karts up to maximum and then do bracket style elimination. The track layout is never the same every time I go which is good for testing different techniques I suppose.

"Blow your socks off".

I thought this expression meant that forward acceleration would so great, that your socks would be left sitting on the pavement at the spot you were in, prior to said acceleration being applied - no association with reverse direction IMO - LOL :-)

Aerodynamic drag.. but yeah deceleration could do that too.. lol
