You'd be surprised. I've already seen a handful of comments here of people saying they bought the $20 one.
I'd never buy them either but there are a lot of groups of people who will.
- Young children who don't yet understand the value of money and just ask their parents to buy them, who oblige once or twice.
- The same young children whose parents foolishly let them buy things themselves
- Adults with plenty of money who don't care, it's an easy alternative for them. Like rich people and parking fines, that's just how much it costs to park there to them. AKA the whales.
- Adults who don't have plenty of money but who are psychologically hit by FOMO worse than us, and just cannot resist.
- Adults who just think "It's only $5, just a cup of coffee right, why not?". Or even "Hell I just got paid today, that Merc is nice, I'll just drop the $20 for it". They think that several times, it all adds up.
As I've said before, make no mistake in thinking PD just slapped all these mechanics together at a whim, and priced the MTs at a whim. They didn't. We know how these companies work in this regard, they put a LOT of time and research into what will work and what won't. Why isn't there a 1M credit MT? Why not a 20M one? Because they've worked out that the prices they've got now will work best. Same with the FOMO elements. They've decided on what is just the right level very carefully.
Will many people buy a $200, 20M one? No. Will they buy a $20 one 10 times over the course of a few years? Yes.
EDIT: Like this guy, for instance:
Right now, a lot of people are rightfully mad at Polyphony Digital with how things are with the game. Some people are even boycotting. However despite all the anger and controversy, will you keep playing the game? Personally...I am going to keep playing because despite the issues, I am still...
