La Sarthe 24 hours too easy?!

Hey guys, remember me?

I really like this thread, and I'd like to contribute a bit also. Since I'm a big Mad FinnTuners nut, I think I'll try my hand at this with the Nissan. It will actually be my first A-Spec of a 24 Hour Race.

(Note: this next paragraph is a big jumble of math. If you had struggles in algebra class in high school, please do not read this next paragraph as I don't want to clean exploded brains from the floor.)
So, anyway, a couple days ago I started looking into this, did a quick couple of laps as a test run against one of the line-ups and found I could be competitive. Once I did that, I did a little bit of mileage testing, and, sadly enough, will have to pit at the end of every sixth lap. But that won't keep me down. After calculating a little more, using around 20 seconds as a variable for extra time put on pit laps, and a lap time of about 3'34.000, I found I'll make somewhere around 58-59 pit stops. Then, I went to figure out what lap times I'll need to turn for a goal of around 400 laps using the following formula:

(58 * (x + 20)) + 432x = 86,400

(86,400 is 24 hours in second form)

so, I solved it and got 213.1 seconds each lap, meaning all I have to turn is an average of 3'33.100. obviously there's a few problems with my equation, such as the true time added each pit stop, and the fact that the pit stops are directly affected by how many laps I turn in the 24 hours, but it's close enough for racing purposes and I don't really want to perfect the equation.

I'll probably start my racing this coming tuesday. Sadly enough I won't be writing a full race report (I'll get bored with it), but I will try and get a few details down from my race and post it.

Ahhh, I see... I shall experiment further with the Viper GTS-R then (I love that car anyway) :D

I doubt you'll get anywhere without fully tuning it, but it is indeed a fun car to drive.

The bug only exists on La Sarthe II and I don't use the red bits either - I stay within the rule of OLR (two tyres in contact with a driving surface, never going wholly beyond the white lines or rumble strip where it exists). It's not always possible to be that precise every lap on a 24hr race, but I do try :D

Yep, I didn't think you would be a corner cutter. But as for the bug, although it may not exist on La Sarthe I, the fact remains that, going by what you said about only needing to complete 396 laps with the R92CP in the field, NTSC AI seem to be faster here. D-N's data backs that up, as does this:

(AIs never push the LMPs beyond about 200-205mph unless in a draft)

NTSC AI limits their speed to about 216 mph unless in a draft. I doubt this accounts for the entire difference, but it's certainly a big chunk.

Anyway, I hope that chassis wear and the inevitable mistakes don't jeopardize your chances of winning in the ZZII, considering that it isn't all that much faster than the AI.

And Belisario, you should be able to win in the Nissan. However, you will need faster laps than you calculated, because a pit stop at La Sarthe costs you nearly forty seconds.

Hmmm *punches a few numbers in a calculator*

210.2 seconds; 3'30.200 lap times. I can probably do that after a few more days of practice, my best consistent laps have been around 3'30s, and depending on the line-up I wont need 400 laps (although I'm going to try not to get the easiest line-up). I have a feeling it will still be really close because that nissan is pretty unstable (although I'm starting to learn what it likes and what it doesn't).

thanks for the tip :)

Where does the number 432 come from? Shouldn't that be 342 if you're aiming for 400 laps?

Edit: Nevermind, I did the calculation, and realized you must have used 342 laps, so the above was merely a typo..

As for the Cien, I remember reading a race-report at some point of someone using that car to win the Fuji 1000-race, which IMO is harder than the Le Sarthe-races. Even dug up the link: Cien at Fuji
If it can win there, it can surely do Le Sarthe.

In my hour test I had one lap that was a 3'51, because I crashed at Mulsanne Corner, Indianapolis AND the entry to Porsche Curves, and I still managed to come out ahead after the hour. I reckon I can afford one completely cacker like that per hour :D

2 day double-post :D

The stock Viper GTS-R is pretty sharp but ultimately not fast enough. I've done several laps testing with one equipped with Turbo Stage 3 and... to be honest it's touch and go. You'd need to run the entire race without a single mistake - and I mean without a single mistake - with the cheater field I encountered (Pescarolo C60, Audi R8, Bentley, Nissan R390, Panoz) but I reckon with a slightly sharper set-up than the one I was using you could pull it off. Only 167 A-Spec points though :(

With the NA Stage 3 (855hp) or the Turbo Stage 4 (940hp) you should be able to be competitive with the quicker cars. Haven't got round to testing it though.

Famine, I wouldn't call yours a "cheater" field at all. If you're willing to look through more lineups, there are better AI grids than that one because the Audi is easily the fastest non-Group-C car and you have two relative slowpokes dragging down the points. Depending on what you wanted to do, you could either find a field of all LMPs (no Group Cs and no snails) or one that looks similar to yours but which replaces the Audi with a different LMP. It's true that fields like that don't come up that often, but if you're going to spend 24 hours doing something, what's an hour to ensure you give yourself the best chance and the best reward possible?

I'm currently in the midst of the Le Mans 24 hour enduro, at the Sarthe 1 (chicaned).

I selected the CLK GTR race car, up against the likes of the Bentley, The Audi R8, The BMW V12, Nissan GT1, and i can't remember whose the other one :P

Anyways, i raced the car stocked, no oil change, SH tyres, stock settings (I tried Ducks' tuning, but with the std controller, it understeer way too much to my liking, so i just opted to race it stock, w/out any tunings).

The car pits every 8 lap, handles pretty well, i'm going into the 4th hour today, have about 1'45 sec lead over the BMW and the Audi. Points for A spec is 157.

I actually find this race pretty challenging, because as we all know, the CLK isn't really the best handling car out there. My laptimes are pretty consistent between 3'30-3'32. So i hope this helps anyways :)
