Before the Lancia Stratos was officially entered in the World Rally Championship it had some brief success at the famous Targa Florio race in 1973 with Sandro Munari piloting a Group 4 Stratos to second place of the legendary race, being edged out by a Porsche Carrera RSR by just 4 minutes.

The car was built on the early Prototype version of the Stratos that featured Marlboro colours and managed to complete 11 laps of the legendary circuit in 7 hours and 30 seconds (the Porsche did it in 6:54:19) and was only used for this event before a dedicated rally version was built for the World Rally Championship based on the Stratos HF.
