LongbowX's Gallery

Hi guys. ^^

Recently, I thought "isn't it odd that I run the competitions, but don't have a gallery on here?". And so, here we are.

I've had my D-SLR for a little while now, since December 2007. I've seen some slow improvement since that time. I will start off this first post with some of my favourite shots over the last little while (the last few months, mostly), but for my next updates they will be event shots from the various races I attend. There will also be shots of other things, besides cars, occasionally.

I would love to get your feedback on anything, there are so many brilliantly talented people on this site.

This was actually taken last year at the ALMS race. These are two Acura LMP2 cars entering Corner One.

Also at the Vintage festival, there was this lovely Super Seven.

A WRX STi after it rained...and we had to clean up the inside of the car because we had left the moonroof open. It poured for less than 10 minutes...

Good stuff - like the E92 gear lever (because it reminds me of my own car).

👍

I've been wondering when you'd have a gallery. You always enter really nice photos into the comps. I love your style and your composition is excellent.

And I also always wondered if other people wondered. XD

Thank you very much for the encouraging words. ^^

Yeah, yeah, stop the sweet talking to eachother and start posting nice pictures! ;) :P

I really like your shots BTW, they have a certain grittyness to it that's very nice. 👍

WOWSER!!!

These shots are epic!.

I love the R8 cap, the CSL front, the Jag and the WRX shot! I also love the tones of the LMP2 cars.

With the CSL and the R8, did you add the vignetting in the PP? It looks awesome on both acounts. 👍

Do tell, what sort of hardware are you running? (or is that a trade secret?) I've never seen a need for some more lenses, but after seeing the Shelby and all of the close up shots, I may need to start looking on ebay in a while - or raid my parents collection.

Great stuff :)

About time

Very nice start to the gallery. The 'stang shot is brilliant. Great detail, fantastic composition and good lighting. It really stands out. The other ones are fantastic as well, really great stuff. 👍

This is a very impressive start to your gallery, Longbow.

Out of the bunch I'd have to go with the R8 fuel cap as my favourit shot. I personally loe B&W, and I really like the vignetting in that shot, it reminds me of a Top Gear camera shot 👍

Great stuff!

Thanks. ^^ I've always enjoyed grit, so it makes sense. I am such a fan of film grain -the texture is lovely.

Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed my attempts. ^^

I did add some vignetting on those two - and I think I did on the Jaguar shot a bit too. I go overboard on it sometimes... I tend not to do very much PP. But sometimes I enjoy the look of it. Actually, the first shot of the GT-350 is the most PP of all. I generally don't do that much - I pretty much generated all of the left side.

My hardware is not a secret, I have...nothing special. It's all in how you use it. From the Automotive comps, you know I have a Canon Digital Rebel XTi. It's served me well so far, even with some of its limitations. As for lenses - I have nothing special at all. Just the kit lens (18-55), and a 70-300mm that was part of the package when buying it. And that's it. I have gotten a Circular Polarizer recently, so that may help a bit. I actually wish I had more lenses, so who knows. I might some more....eventually.

Yeah I know, eh?

I liked it enough to heavily fix it, which is unusual for me.

Thank you very much for the encouragement. ^^

It does resemble a Top Gear shot! They always love vignetting. And so do I. Black and white is always amazing, as well.

Thank you all again for your kind words and inspiration.

Ah...see, I was wandering around with just the 55-200 fitted. Granted, there were situations where the closer focus would have been nice. I could do with more zoom than the 200, but I'm not going to spend any more money on the camera untill I get my eye in more (I promise :sly:) (plus I've still got to clean my sensor:nervous:).

You, sir, have one steady grip to take those shots so sharp. One of the main things I'll freely admit that I need heaps of work on.

Again, great job :).

I try not to switch the lenses too much. I switch to the 18-55 when I visit the pits and such (it's sometimes difficult to get into a position where you can get the whole car in at 55mm), and then use the 70-300 for when I'm taking shots of the track. Also, one thing that's nice about Mosport raceway is there are lots of great angles you can get - if you like walking. And I could probably get away with a 200mm lens for most of it, but I'm not sure what it's like at where you visit. Getting a lens when you think you're ready for it, is always a good plan. My camera's sensor is a bit dirty too, I think...I don't know when I'll get it cleaned.

Panning is practice. And I think I've gotten better - I might post a few more from the Vintage event later today. But I used to not be nearly as adequate. You'll only see yourself improve, as long as you keep trying.

I'm glad you enjoy them. ^^

EDIT: I was going to post some, but now I feel they aren't up to snuff. So they will have to wait. I'm really...particular when it comes to posting things...

So, I am back with a second update of some other things than cars. But I think I will post some of those soon. I had a little impromptu photoshoot with a new CTS-V yesterday.

I stood outside in the cold earlier this year with my friend while we were waiting for a concert. And I snapped this.

I took this at a greenhouse near my university. My friend tells me I shoot flowers in a "macabre" way. Hah.

softwhitebyvolpediraven.jpg

This is another from the greenhouse. I thought these were interesting as well. ...But I have no idea what they are.

Just in case you think I'm going soft with all these flowers...here is a Black Widow spider.

All of them are great. The The colours are interesting on the flowers. I really dig the last flower shot as the lighting is spot on. And that spider is badass!

Thanks so much. ^^ I highly agree, that spider is awesome

That last flower shot: they look like attacking snakes. :)

Haha. Yeah, I see that. They aren't though, and I'm really wondering what they are called now...

The second & third flowers are really good. Your track shots lose a little too much detail in the blacks for my liking. Good work though.

I think that is more due to my lack of PP skill at that point. The last two were from last year, and I think I would edit them differently now than I did then. I think the first shot is fine, I like it a little dark. For comparison I'll put up this, it's the same last shot, I just edited it quickly this morning, but I think it looks better and probably more to your liking.

Yes, that's much better. Cameras often overexpose the blacks when shooting cars, so I find I have to bring in the black level to get proper blacks on the tyres. Your second process of that shot has a lot more interesting detail in the engine area, and being able to see the blurred maker's name on the tyres helps the sense of motion.

I'm beginning to notice that, yeah. I think this version is heaps better. I should probably just replace it on my opening page.

Thanks so much for the feedback, I appreciate it very much. I'm glad you like this one better. ^^

Cool pictures you have, and quite a nice dark feel to them 👍

Thank you very much. I'm glad you like them. ^^ I enjoy that dark feeling.

I thought I would post this - which I was considering to be my Automotive Competition entry, but I decided on the TVR instead. I don't really ever see TVR's here in Canada. Not that I see many 4.2 E-Types either....

I thought I would take this opportunity to tell people I am attending the American Le Mans series this weekend at Mosport, and if anyone wants me to snap any particular cars taking part in that race, I will gladly do so. Of course, in order to request - it has to be done before tomorrow morning. I will leave around 10:30 am (EST) so try to say before 10. In any case, I will probably have at least one shot of the particular car of your desire. If you want me to try for a wallpaper-worthy shot, I shall try. And you can have the shot (full-size), if you wish. ^^

There are the BMW M3s, the Corvettes, the Porsches, the Ford GT, a Viper and a Panoz in the GT2 class (There is also Ferrari [F430GT], but it had... problems in practice. It might be racing, or it might not be. So...no promises on that one. ). And among the LMP1/2 cars are the Acura, Mazda - and various others such as the Radical team.

I've never done this before, I don't even know if people would be interested in me doing this - but I am willing to give it a go.

Thank you. ^^

EDIT: Since no one has requested anything, I will do what I was thinking to do in the first place: do a car feature - post the best photos of each specific car. ^^

EDIT #2: I have many good shots from today, and the car/team/driver feature will go ahead, I think. If you have any preference as to where I start, let yourself be heard. Thank you. ^^

Here is a short update before more car shots with some photographs I took earlier this year of two different toads. The one on the red tulip didn't behave (that is one of 2 shots I managed to take before it moved) and the one on the yellow tulip was most cooperative.

My yellow flowered friend.
