Magnitude 8.0 earthquake in Mexico triggers Tsunami warning

Tsunami warning

Do you have a source for the tsunami warning? Four hours ago the NWS were saying no tsunami was expected. The earthquake's big enough news on it's own.

From a geological point of view it'll be fascinating to see if it was caused by the incredible pressure changes across the plates.

it was STRONG. And long. Looong. By far the strongest I've ever felt, to the point that you couldn't really stand still. The entire neighborhood went dark, stuff creaking... yeah, freaking scary.

Fortunately, we're all good here in Mexico City. In the south of Mexico things didn't go too well, as there are already reports of severe damage in about 4 states and 6 deaths so far.

Related to this are the reverberations in the Earth's magnetic field caused by impacting CME's following from a series of strong M and X class solar flares. The quake and tsunami that destroyed the Fukushima reactors occurred under similar circumstances. It could even be speculated that additional energy is imparted into the hurricanes by spaceweather events.

If you're talking about the theories of the reddit guy then they're interesting but only for how often he predicts M8.0 and nothing happens. He's strictly a correlation guy.

I don't use reddit - tho I did read and contribute to their thread about True Detective a few years ago. :D

edit: Mysterious green flashes - earthquake lights - seen and videotaped over Mexico City during 8.1 quake. Similar lights have been noted during the Fukushima event and others.

I've just looked up every X-Class flare in the 21st Century. There are 42 of them.

6 were followed within 3 days by an earthquake measuring 7 or more on the MMS scale:
X2.8 11th December 2001; MMS 7.1 12th December 2001
X10.0 29th October 2003; MMS 7.0 31st October 2003
X17.0 & X5.4 7th-8th September 2005; MMS 7.7 9th September 2005
X2.7 5th May 2015; MMS 7.5 5th May 2015
X9.3 6th September 2017; MMS 8.1 9th September 2017

The other 36 were not. Similarly, only 5 earthquakes measuring 7+ on the MMS scale were preceded by X-Class flares. 239 of them were not, including both of the 9s at Sumatra and Tohoku. Incidentally, you refer to the Tohoku earthquake above (March 11, 2011) as occurring under 'similar circumstances', but there are no flares of any kind for more than seven months before it and more than a month after it, much less M or X flares.

Only one X-Class flare was followed within 5 days by a Category 4 or greater hurricane in the Atlantic:
X10 29th October 2003; Michelle (4) 3rd November 2003

Irma formed as a category 4 and then category 5 hurricane a day before this week's X9.3. The remaining 31 Category 4+ storms (including Irma) did not form after an X-Class flare, and the remaining 41 X-Class flares did not precede a Category 4+ Atlantic Hurricane.

For Pacific hurricanes, I've only found Juliette (which formed before an X-ray flare, but strengthened after one) in September 2001 and Kenneth (which formed five days after a barrage of four X-ray flares) in September 2005 of 48 Category 4+ hurricanes that could be associated with flares. A further storm, Hurricane Fausto, weakened after a flare.

So the percentages are:
14% X-ray flares preceded MMS7+ earthquake
2% X-ray flares preceded Cat4+ Atlantic Hurricane
5% X-ray flares preceded Cat4+ Pacific Hurricanes

2% MMS7+ earthquakes preceded by X-ray flare
3% Cat4+ Atlantic Hurricanes preceded by X-ray flare
4% Cat4+ Pacific Hurricanes preceded by X-ray flare

"Earth's magnetic field is still reverberating from a CME strike on March 10th."
...from the March 11, 2011 edition of spaceweather.com

@Famine
Thanks very much for looking up all those events!
I'm not suggesting that there is a one-to-one correspondence between space weather and earthquakes and/or hurricanes.

What I am suggesting is that there is an under-appreciated and as yet unquantified relationship between space weather and Earth's weather. I've been following the science news from NASA's solar and heliophysics research for just a few years. They have published that the Sun and Earth are part of a spaceweather system and one of their decadal goals is to learn more about this.

14% X-ray flares preceded MMS7+ earthquake
2% X-ray flares preceded Cat4+ Atlantic Hurricane
5% X-ray flares preceded Cat4+ Pacific Hurricanes

2% MMS7+ earthquakes preceded by X-ray flare
3% Cat4+ Atlantic Hurricanes preceded by X-ray flare
4% Cat4+ Pacific Hurricanes preceded by X-ray flare

A perfect job.

Here's a good article with a similar examination of the question.

Earthquake lightning. Here's an easy read, here's a more in-depth one.

It was absolutely spectacular from an aesthetic point of view. And absolutely terrifying too.

The whole thing must have been terrifying, glad you're safe!

Good finds. I've been looking at these sorts of articles for a number of years, for they are indeed fascinating.

"The possible coupling mechanisms among lithosphere- atmosphere-ionosphere (LAI) have been suggested in many publications"
- from your in-depth source paper.

NASA takes this two-way coupling notion seriously - all the way up to the Sun, out to the fringes of the heliosphere at roughly twice orbit of Pluto and back again. They have a large number scientists and engineers, a large budget and a dedicated decadal plan involving many missions to study the Sun-Earth connection within the overall workings of the solar system. The study of the Sun-Earth connection is not the most glamorous question NASA works on, but it is one which ranks highly in their dedicated and budgeted 10 year plan of things to do.

One day we may understand the mechanism of periodic ice ages afflicting our planet - hopefully before the next one arrives!

edit: Your source paper also mention the vertical electric field between the Earth and the sky. Elsewhere I have read the height and strength of this electric field varies greatly as a function of the time of day. Diurnal, I believe, is the term. This phenomenon has a number of potentially interesting implications.

We too, live on the "rim of fire". I dread the "The Big One", coming one day to the Pacific NorthWest. We also have volcanoes in addition to the recently erupting Mt. St. Helens, all of which will one day erupt again. The closest to me, Mt Rainier, erupted a few hundred years ago sending a lahar (mud flow) something like 50 miles towards the suburbs of present day Seattle. When that happens again, scores of thousands of people will be in its path, risking death. In the 70's, a lahar in Peru was said to have taken some 70,000 lives.

Hope you are doing fine, old buddy . . . heard that Mexico got hit again right now.
Trying to sort out the real video from the fake . . .

This looks like it could be real serious. Building facades have fallen, and fires may be breaking out.

Damn, I am not from México City but have lot of friends there and I am on vacation in Europe, fortunatelly all of my friends are ok but it Is heartbreaking, even More at this distance when seeing all the videos and photos :(

  • Central Mexico earthquake kills dozens
  • Strong earthquake comes on anniversary of devastating 1985 earthquake

(CNN)[Breaking news update, posted at 5:02 p.m. ET]

At least 42 people were killed in Morelos state in a magnitude-7.1 earthquake that struck central Mexico, according to a preliminary report issued by the governor.

77 dead confirmed at the moment.

I feel so bad about being so far away at the moment :(

Quite the seismic event, certainly. Event Though Mexico City canexpect such earthquakes, it's a lot of energy to expect structures to absorbe when it happens. @Cano I hope you've been able to keep safe, and I hope our Mexican members have made it through this major earthquake.

We have a guy from Mexico working in our department right now. We get a lot of workers from down there that come up here for extended periods of time to train or help with the work load. (Nissan proving grounds) Our plant down there is in Aguascalientes which is a good distance from Mexico City. He was just showing me videos from full buildings collapsing in MC. People just standing out in the street watching them fall.

I am fine, thanks everyone that thought about me. Family, friends, all fine.

Fortunately for me, the earthquake caught me in a very luxurious hotel, in an event I had to go to due to work. The building was designed to withstand 11.x movements, so I had it "good". In fact I did not believe it felt so strong until I watched first hand videos of people literaly falling on the ground because of the movement; while I was evacuating the hotel, I was walking perfectly normal.

Unfortunately, the wife was not there and she lived it in all its horrifying swing, told me she almost fell on the ground herself. Ran outside without her keys, so she had to wait until I arrived to get in the house, along with two of our dogs, the third one ran inside the house behind a closed door, so poor Money had to endure the trembling all alone.

Now for the facts: 121 deaths so far, several collapsed buildings in 6 states, a lot of people still trapped. The city is completely collapsed movility-wise. yes, it was a hell of a day.

Glad to read you are ok bro!

I'm currently in Toluca and experienced the very same swing your wife felt, I almost lost balance during the whole thing.

The city is completely collapsed. I wish I was home with my family :(

Working over there? And everyone ok on your side?

I'm on a training course here for the whole week. I'll return to the city on Friday.

Everybody is fine: family, friends, coworkers, and even my crazy ex is ok.

Glad to hear man. Wait until you come back, the city is devastated.
