Makinen on Subaru team?

Um, yeah - you might want to pop a helmet for the upcoming response from the forum - the guys here are fairly up with news in the WRC...

There was a pretty big deal made about it late last year with Burns moving to Peugeot, and Subaru suddenly discovering they had a clause in his contract preventing him from leaving - got a bit nasty there for a while, especially with Makkinen coming in. The deal was signed in around September/October I think (pretty much as soon as Tommi got his hands on the Evo VII WRC car I think!)

I feel sorry for the car signwriter.

'No, it's T Makkinen and M Hakkinen, not M Takinen and T Hakinen!'

I did check the date of the post, thinking it was another bumped thread!

Then I noticed the quote, encased in Mitsubishi logos, in Evolution Racers' sig: "Speed is nothing without handling."

And I thought, that either would be nice for the new Evo VII WRC!

On a serious note, it seems that Tommi is continuing his run of crashing out while being shown the way by Solberg. I wonder if we could see a "shock" retirement at the end of the year...

Interesting theory - I really thought he'd kill Solberg, but Solberg has taken the step up this year. I doubt Makkinen would give it away, but I imagine Subaru would be less than impressed with the return on investment so far.

I'm surprised Burns has taken so long to settle at Peugeot - or have they just been supersmart with their young recruiting?

No, absolutely. And it's clear-cut that it's Makinen at fault in most of the shunts, rather than the car. In fact, it's like they're playing each others' roles: Makinen the impetuous youth, failing to exercise any judgement, and Solberg the experienced hand, getting everywhere with poise and speed. I think Solberg might be the next Carlos Sainz: always quick, always consistent.

This is an interesting one. Everyone wants to drive for Peugeot, it must be a really unsettling place to work. Plus, Gronholm's really on it this year, which can't be helping. I sense something of the Williams management team in Peugeot: you know, all pally pally on the surface, but actually not really giving a rat's ass about the drivers. Quite destabilising really.

Also, let's not forget that World Champion he may be, but Burns really isn't that good. I mean, he won his WC in a year when he won one rally, and three other drivers won three rallies each. That Burns should win overall sure is one ****ed up result in my book.

Please excuse the vitriol, the above paragraph is almost certainly coloured by the fact that I think Burns is a complete knob!

It didn't come out at all in your post!

I had suspicions he wasn't absolutely top line that year - it was an unsual one with a lot of crashes and retirements (and if we're blunt about it McRae probably threw away the championship in the last couple of rounds with some silly crashes).

I'm still not decided by Gronholm - I thought he fluked a brilliant car in 2000, but towards the end of last year he started to show some real speed, which was impressive given Ford and Subaru seemed to catch up at the start of the year, and as you say he's been very impressive this year - there's probably a couple more titles in him, assuming the Peugeot-Citroen group stay interested in WRC.
