Memories of Spyro

Well I think it's about time we get a Spyro thread here on the forums. :) Like the_cobbinator's thread on "Memories of Crash Bandicoot", if you have played any Spyro games before and want to discuss the sweet memories you have had with them, this is the place to go. :)

Well for me, some memories I have is playing with my cousin once at my house way back in my really early days of gaming and him forgetting to take Spyro the Dragon back home with him. :P So when I found out it was still there after he left, I played it like there was no tomorrow! :D Got pretty far in the game but I never saved it because I was too young to understand how to use a memory card. I eventually had to give it back but I still enjoyed playing it. :)

Another memory I want to share is I remember playing Spyro Season of Flame on the Game Boy Advance (yes I do have a Game Boy Advance despite my username) the last day of school before Christmas and finally beating it after nearly 10 years of owning it. :D It was one of the best days I had in years! :D

What's yours? :)

So this is that Spyro thread that you thought of not too long ago.

Alright, I have some fond memories of playing the original Spyro with my father when I was 6 and when I was introduced to the wonderful worlds and what lied within each one. One of my favorite memories from that time were the theif chases.

Egg_Thief_STD.png

This creepy-looking, little bugger was a pain in the butt to catch, but at the same time just fun to chase with their childish taunts and child sounding voice. What really caught me off guard was finding out that they came in more than 1 color when seeing the red & green ones in the level "Tree Tops".

I also have a good memory of watching my friend's brother play through the "High Caves" level on his Playstation and playing Ripto's rage with another friend on her playstation such as the yeti in a level that I couldn't remember the name of. All I know is that it had Monks and Goats in it.

Actually I had been meaning to create this thread for over a year now, I just haven't done it until now. :P

Ah yes I remember that thief! :dopey: It was a pain in the butt to catch indeed. It used to creep me out when I was younger, but now I just laugh at it. I remember in Spyro Year of the Dragon on the level Molten Crater, when you go to one of the areas, there were 2 thieves you had to chase, one without super charge turned on and one with. I remember one of the characters said he would turn on the super charge (or whatever it is called) so you could catch him easier but in truth it only made it harder. :P Lots of memories I could share for Spyro Year of the Dragon but I just can't pick one right now. :P

Is that an actual close up of the thief by the way?

I still play the original trilogy till this day.
I was just recently playing the 3rd game a couple days ago.

Ah yes, I could never catch that red thief when I was little. The supercharger made things too difficult by making the thief faster and spyro was a bit hard to control with the supercharger in play.

Anyway yes, that's a picture of the thief from the original Spyro game manual. It was a creepy surprise when I saw the screenshot for the first time when I was 6 years old.

Yes. Yes. YES.

Many memories with that song right there! :D I remember the greatest hits version of the Dino Mines song had a similar tune, especially in the beginning.

My point exactly, it was too hard to catch with it on. The red was indeed the worst on any level.

Wow ever since I was 7 I always wondered what it looked like up close, now I know! :)

Who here remembers this dirt bag?
Moneybags.png

If you don't remember this guy, you obviously didn't play it enough. ;)

I used to try to find different ways to get around him, I managed to do it once on Spooky Swamp. I can never forget watching the cutscenes of him getting beat up. :P It got even better when you get to chase him down in the end after defeating the sorceress. Man, you just don't find good games like that anymore.

"Moneybags: I hope you appreciate this favour I'm doing in letting you out.
Sheila: That's decent of you mate. No hard feelings right?
Moneybags: Right. After all, I'm just doing my jo...
[Sheila kicks him]"

Moneybags didn't seem that bad in Spyro 2, but in Spyro 3; he became so much worse in terms of his atitude and greediness. Which made it all the more satisfying when you got to chase him at the end of Spyro 3. XD

I used to love Spyro games as I was growing up but there was always one problem with them that I never understood. After playing for a while I'd feel really weird, almost sick. It wasn't until I was older and connected the dots between this and other similar games that the camera was giving me motion sickness. It happens to me in any game like this with an actice camera and I also can't play most first person games.

It's a shame, because they were fun games but when I tried to play them again a few years ago it still happened, motion sickness after an hour or two.

Wow, I was just thinking of that moment right before you posted it and next I know you post it. :P

I never played Spyro 2, but you are right about Spyro 3, he was extremely greedy, but it's excusable when you can beat the living crap out of him. :mischievous:

Knock on wood, he actually had a stroke of generosity in Spyro Season of Flame for the Gameboy Advance. ;) He generously gives all your gems back at the end of the game surprisingly. You will never find that in Year of the Dragon.

Wow never heard of such things happening before, man that really sucks, Spyro games were some of the best games ever created. :indiff: I guess blood and gore doesn't isn't always what makes people sick these days.

I remember Spyro Year of the Dragon had the ability to adjust the camera settings and I wonder if that is in any other Spyro titles. You should give it another go and try changing the camera a bit and see if it works for you. ;) These are some really fun games to play, even now. ;)

Yeah I tried fiddling with the camera in them when I tried playing them again a few years ago as an adult. Didn't help. As I say it's a shame because they were great fun to play as a kid, not too childish and devilshly difficult towards the end of each one but yeah, can't play 'em or anything like that.

I'm not the only one though: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.266516-Poll-Video-Game-Induced-Motion-Sickness

Most recent game I got it with was Tomb Raider (reboot), but that wasn't too bad to stop me playing.

I don't like first person shooters anyway but it still sucks that I can't play pretty much any first person game (Couldn't play The Stanley Parable for more than 20 minutes recently, and no chance with Mirrors Edge!), or any 3D game with a fast moving camera.

@Samus
Well that's too bad, but I can understand the possibility of getting sick from playing games like that.

On a smiliar note, the moving camera of the Spyro games do really annoy me sometimes and the camera angles can really make an disorienting experience for me. Not just this game, but other platformers too and sometimes in the cases of the 1st person games I play.

I really do hate that for you, Spyro games always were and still are some very awesome games. 👍 They always where pretty easy and fun for all ages! :D Like any game of course, it does get a little challenging at some points but it isn't frustratingly difficult. ;)

Well Call of Duty certainly isn't the game for you, especially with all the blood and gore it has along with violate stabbing you see in the game. :scared:

I am surprised Crash Bandicoot hasn't done this to you because there games are pretty well know for having fast moving cameras.

I love the OP for starting this thread.
Well thank you Zyla! :D I knew it would be a great thread for people to post there precious memories they have with Spyro. :)

I am curious to know yours. :)

Well, let's see. I'm very fond of the first Spyro (Spyro the Dragon), as it has one of the best OSTs and the best worlds. My personal favorite being either Wizard Peak (amazing music in this level), or Alpine Ridge. Those big yellow things are terrifying, like, even now, they freak me out. The level that scares me the most is Misty Bog. *shudders* Those rabbit/tree things that chew you up are just... no. scary k

It's not necessarily only fast cameras, also the way they move and rotate the game world I guess, the combination. Crash was fine because the camera only went forwards/side to side and the world itself doesn't move/rotate like spyro and most first person games.

As a kid I just played through it not knowing why it happened but these days, knowing what is causing it, I can't play them.

I have to say this, Gnasty Gnorc is probably the most pathetic boss I've ever dealt with in a video game. He runs away the moment I can fight him and he only takes 2 hits before being defeated.

Well, he runs to make it last longer (it's also somewhat challenging to catch him, too), and it doesn't take much to defeat him because the game was made for kids, mostly. Either way, the level is fun and nostalgic for me. The music is awesome too. :)

I wouldn't exactly let that Spyro being a kids game be an excuse for Gnasty being weak considering how much more difficult the final bosses were in the 2nd & 3rd games.

Which yeah, I still say that Ripto is one of the most difficult bosses I've dealt with in a video game. With that said, I'm definitely not ready to take on the games made during the original nintendo years.

This song takes me back, to when I first played this level being surprised at the giant spider-like bugs that inhabited the caves you first see.

Those bugs were a pain, at least until I got kissed by Fairy with the blue dress.

Another odd memory of Spyro for me is that I remember enjoying even the 4th Spyro game "Enter the Dragonfly". A lot of people don't exactly enjoy that game due to its many faults. I however ignored most of them and found enjoyment in the levels. Plus, that game managed to catch me offguard when I was introduced to "Thieves Dan". I mean, what the heck?!
There's actually a Spyro game where there's blue thieves that you don't chase.

I had that game for the PS2 when I was younger, then my brother decided to give it away to a game store for money. Still bothers me to this day.

One thing I remember from Spyro Season of Flame for the GBA is their were these fire pixies you had to chase around on a level called "Gypsy Roads" and freeze all of them with your ice breath. I absolutely hated them! They moved around so fast and they unfroze so quickly, I eventually gave up trying. I beat them a few years ago finally, but unfortunately I lost my save game a while back and I will have to redo the whole game again.

Luckily I have Wii set up now were I can play GBA games on it. I dread dealing them fire pixies again, but hey, that will give me a chance to relive a lot of old memories from the game as well as make some new ones, all on a bigger screen! :dopey:

Kind adds some ambition to it if you ask me.

Those kissy fairies always made me blush when I was a little kid. No idea why. I love that level though, and the music.
I remember Spryo Year of the Dragon had one of them as well on a level called "Frozen Altar" I think. It pretty much had the same character model as Zoe, but with blue skin and different color clothes. I remember on that level, she gives you icy breath. She had a really sweet voice and she also blew a kiss as well. I still think that's kind of cute. :D

What? :odd:

Yes, in Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, you don't chase any BLUE thieves. Rather, there's a whole level (as said in my previous comment) where you help them save their home. There's red thieves you have to chase of course still, but not the blue ones.

I wouldn't know because I never played that game. Those theives still seem sketchy though, if they betray you later in the game, it will not surprise me.

Ah, Spyro... What beautiful memories it brought in my childhood. It was my second favorite compared to Crash.

I had Season of Fire and Season of Ice on my old GBA. And if I recall, there was a demo of the PS1 game if you do a cheat code in Crash Bash.
