Metal Gear Online

I think the game is great. It's like they took the view of socom, the cover system from gears of war, the combat from gta, the stealth from splinter cell, and the aiming features of all those games and cod4. I haven't had a shooter make me feel like i was there like this one does since socom 2. There are endless stats to look at, and a very deep clan feature. I imagine in the full release there will even be clan tournaments. Thats something i have been waiting on forever. At least I hope there are clan tournys. Any way I can't wait until the full release. I didn't even know there was a beta until I opened the dvd i was sent with the preorder, I even had it for a week before i opened it on the 4th. The only reason I ordered it was because there really isn't anything else to buy for the ps3. Needless to say when I played the beta i was pleasantly suprised. I welcome the change of pace from all the other shooters that have came out in the last couple of years.

We all just kicked out, since they're 'updating the server.' I hope this is the surprise Konami was talking about. No more lag? New maps? New weapons? New characters? New games?

I also now have 5 skill points! How did that happen?

How many skill points do you have?

I hate everything about the way this game feels. Im trying to force myself to get used to it, because everyone seems to think its amazing, so I must be missing something. When Im aiming at someone to shoot them, I cant even tell if Im hitting them. The running is sooo slow. The controls seem soo blocky. I just dont get what people find in this game.

I'd assume the majority of the people who enjoy it, enjoy it because it's not a run and gun grenade spamming first person shooter.

Just a theory.

Yeah, I agree this could be the main reason.

I presume you like it then? :P

And the probably enjoy it when people charge you with a shotgun, stand in the middle of doorways to re-load and go out to "mark" their kills, leaving them wide open to sniper fire. You know real Halo-esque stuff. Some idiot on another forum I'm on was doing the latter, going to teabag the people he KO'd and then was whinging loudly about it whenever he got shot because he broke cover. To him, all the n00bs who didn't know how to play the game and were camping needed to be kicked off the server and "real gamers" needed to be involved. Everyone tried to explain the concept that it's a stealth-based game, but did he listen?

To me, that was the one thing that could ruin Metal Gear Online: people taking one of the greatest gaming experiences ever created and violating it no end.

I thought Konami did an OK job providing maps for all types of players. The typical "run and gunners" had Blood Bath (BB) while we snipers had MM and a combo of both for GG.

Obviously, my favorite was MM, once it came available. It's too bad morons and idiots ruined most of the fun at this map. It took a lot of ending games and searching for the right room to play a decent MM game.

Well, yeah, it was a step in the right direction to cater for all types of gamers, but the question is whether the gamers themselves will recognise that. Sure, it'll play out such that certain maps will be favoured by certain types of players, but will the right types of games be played on those maps?

Maybe I'm just paranoid ...

G.T

I enjoyed it a lot man, quite frankly it's the best team oriented 3rd person shooter on the market. The folks on NeoGAF that I played with were amazing, and it was some of the best fun I had ever had.

It's a shame that I'm currently temporarily stationed in Oklahoma and don't have access to a good connection, so my online gaming has been put to a sudden halt. But, at least I get to ride around in a blackhawk from time to time and unload on folks with a mounted M249.

Solid Lifters - Good to see you're finally getting a bit more into online gaming. If you really want to enjoy MGO when it finally hits (well, the 'starter pack' that will come with MGS4) I suggest you register at NeoGAF now, so your account may / may not be activated by the time the game is released. The folks over at NeoGAF are great to play with, very team oriented, and always respectful (well, the majority of them who play MGO at least).

I'm already a member, plus I tried to join one of the clans, and did for a few days, until I got kicked out when they found out I was already in a different clan. I told them that other clan never met anywhere, but they didn't care.

I often played with a guy called MO GUNZ. He was the only legitimate (didn't cheat) level 10 player I ever played with. He was that good.

*bump*

Now since I am guessing that many people here have this game and some may also be playing online, perhaps anyone can give their thoughts. Just had a few games myself and it seems pretty fun.

[edit] I have changed my mind about online mode, its pretty poor to be honest. Few maps poor controls etc. There is little stealth taking place at all.

Shut up. Just shut up.

I take back everything I said, now that im familiar with the controls (having beaten the single player), I find it a lot more fun.

Can somone (people) with Good connections create few servers? 3vs3 4vs4 and 5vs5 I think its best #s for best team play, and NO lag, no chaos going on. And make it a GTP servers with password. That way all of us from GTPlanet can enjoy this wonderful tactical shooter.

Can someone confirm MGO being region locked ?
How about disc and game IDs changeable if you buy or rent another disc later?
What are that konami IDs good for anyway?
Thanks in advance.

Sloth = dies a lot to headshots
Rat = falls for lots of traps
Eagle = lots of kills via headshot
Crocodile = lots of kills (not headshots or knife)
Jaws = lots of kills with the knife
Frog = plays capture mission often
Dove = tends not to kill one's opponents
Tortoise = uses the cardboard box a lot
Night Owl = uses ENVG a lot
Snake = plays Sneaking Mission often
Flying Squirrel = rolls around often
Bee = uses the s-plug to get SOP data often

Just in case you wanted to know.

BUMP

Wow, is anybody actually playing this? I haven't since too many cheaters came online to ruin the fun a week after the game was released.

Looks like Konami decides NOW is the time to do something about it.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Konami-Takes-Action-Against-Metal-Gear-Online-Cheaters-104004.shtml

The Metal Gear Solid franchise is one of the most popular Japanese-made series of all times. Being the brainchild of famous game designer Hideo Kojima, all of the titles found within it have pioneered the stealth games and introduced a level of storytelling never seen before.

In recent years, besides the eagerly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots title, which would finally bring to an end the saga of the series' main character, Solid Snake, Konami also launched Metal Gear Online, a PlayStation 3-exclusive multiplayer-only title, in June last year.

Taking place in the Metal Gear universe, the game delivered a pretty interesting experience, featuring a wide variety of modes, including the classic deathmatch and the team deathmatch ones, along with rescue, capture, or other stealth missions.

However, while the release became pretty popular, it was unavoidable that some people would take advantage of glitches in certain maps that would allow them to easily kill their opponents. After receiving a lot of complaints from the victims of such users, Konami finally decided to take action against them.

The Japanese company announced a few days ago that 113 users that had been drawing advantages from the glitches in the title suffered the consequences of their actions, despite not detailing what specific action it took against them.

“Konami has a firm policy regarding cheating in Metal Gear Online,” a statement delivered to all of the players of MGO read. “It will not be tolerated. In keeping with this position, we have taken action against 113 accounts participating in prohibited behavior. The role of the gaming community in keeping Metal Gear Online free of this type of activity cannot be overstated. You are the first line of defense. We encourage you to report instances of prohibited behavior and ask that you provide any evidence you may have regarding these events.”

Konami did the right thing, as people who derive benefit from glitches and ruin the whole experience of other players don't deserve to be called gamers. Hopefully, this will deter any other individuals from taking advantage of the problems found in the game.

Duh! Too little, way the hell too late, Konami.

Just a heads up... the PSN store recently made available a 1080p video trailer for the MGO SCENE Expansion, and the PlayStation blog posted more info about the expansion pack as well as several screen shots:

Metal Gear Online – SCENE Expansion Release Date and Details

Posted on Mar 6, 2009 by Brandon Laurino // Konami Online

Hello all – We’re happy to announce the official release date and more details about the SCENE Expansion pack for Metal Gear Online. SCENE will be available separately for $9.99 and offered as a bundle with the second MGO Expansion pack, MEME, for $14.99 as well as all three expansion packs – GENE, MEME, and SCENE, for just $17.99 on March 17, 2009 via Metal Gear Online’s in-game shop and Konami’s shop. All will be available for purchase using the PlayStation Network Wallet (as well as PayPal, in addition to the previous payment methods). The pre-order period for SCENE starts on March 10, 2009, and will run up until release date. And remember, all players who pre-order SCENE will receive the special “cardboard man” head gear for free!

I know many of you are curious to know each of the new special character’s (Raiden and Vamp) weapons and abilities, as both characters display incredible talents in the Metal Gear Solid 4 single player campaign. You’ll be happy to know that many of their same abilities will be available in Metal Gear Online.

Raiden is quite agile, can run very fast and uses a High Frequency Blade. Much like in the single player campaign, he is best at close-range hand-to-hand combat. He will be able to jump to high places where ordinary soldiers would need a co-op boost, and can also fall from high places and land without taking damage. Naturally, he can use his High Frequency Blade, which can be used to deflect frontal attacks when drawn, in addition to attacks. He can also choose to use it in a non-lethal mode, by using the back of the blade. He also will have Throwing Knives available, and can headshot other players by using them. He also has a special VISOR that, when in the closed position, will be able to detect traps. As he does not have nano-machines implanted into his body, he will be unable to use the SOP Link, SOP Destabilizer and the SOP system information gathering skills such as scanning, etc. All SOP related abilities and affects are therefore nullified when using this character.

Vamp, master of knives, is agile, runs incredibly fast and excels at close-range hand-to-hand combat, especially when using his Combat Knife and Throwing Knife, which he can use to headshot other players, like Raiden. He will be able to jump to hard-to-reach places, fall from high places without taking damage – but will be able to utilize the SOP system and fall victim to it, unlike Raiden. His unique nano-machines will also make him seem immortal, every time he is defeated during the game, he will be resurrected in the same location.

There will also be a new game type opened to all MGO players: Solo Capture (SCAP). SCAP is a FREE-FOR-ALL Match with no team divisions. Capturing the Kerotan frog will make that player’s timer begin to decrease. The player who can keep possession of the Kerotan frog the longest, and allows their timer to reach zero first, will be the winner. If a player who isn’t holding the Kerotan is killed, no points will be awarded, but that player’s timer will be reduced.

Also included in SCENE is a great deal of new gear that you can use to customize your character, including the Bikini Outfit, Clown Face Paint, Haven Trooper Uniform Set, Resistance Uniform Set, Hockey Mask, Mohawk Wig, Short Cut Wig, Shirtless, and Robbie (Silent Hill character).

There’s still a lot more cool stuff in SCENE yet to be revealed, stay tuned to the PlayStation.Blog for more updates in the coming weeks!

You can check the link for the all the screen shots... but here are just a few that caught my eye:

Bunnies and clowns? Everybody's nightmare coming true.

I just don't see any reason to get this. I never play the game anymore. I wish they had this sooner and did something about the cheating way, way sooner.
