I've never even played Peace Walker before, looking forward to it. Finished my first run through MGS2 last night, deciding whether to run through it again to do the things I missed (dog tags etc) or go to MGS3. I didn't really like 3 the first time around, be interesting to see if I like it more now after playing 4, which was also quite different from 1 and 2.

I too need to pick up MGS4 again, but I also have to complete as much of, well, all five of them as I can. I want to complete all four on Extreme (I've built myself an autofire controller to deal with the strangulation bit in MGS2, which is the only reason I never finished it on anything harder than Hard back in the PS2 days) and finish off as much of PW as I can stomach, I wouldn't be surprised if I give up before I S-rank the Extra Ops bosses. I don't know why but as much as MGS frustrates me (always with the general cheapness of some deaths and the fist fights at the end, though MGS3 wasn't too bad), I always come back. No other game has ever made me want to persevere like that, I really don't know why.

Edit: My list of preference goes MGS3, MGS, MGS4, PW, MGS2. That's not to say I dislike 2, I just really like the others. I wish they'd add trophies to MGS4, that would definitely motivate me to play it more than just wanting to. I'm pretty sure that makes very little sense but I can't think of a better way to put it.

After playing MGS and MGS2 I had got very used to what MGS was, primarily sneaking around built up areas with a clear path from A-B and getting around. I wouldn't say it was easy but it felt natural, sneaking around buildings. When I got 3 I just didn't get on with it, I didn't like the wide expansive setting and with the viewpoint given found it very tricky not to get spotted, whereas in reality you have much better vision all the time, without having to switch to 'first person' view.

MGS4 again, I just didn't like most of the settings, they didn't feel like fun places for a sneaking mission although the main viewpoint was a big improvement because you could actually see more going on. I got through 3 once and enjoyed 4 the more I played it but the mission back at Shadow Moses just reminded me how much better that kind of setting was.

MGS2 was a bit odd making the Snake mission a small part of it and setting the bulk of the game on a rather dull, generic hub system but I still enjoyed it because it was a good backdrop for me. Plus it also had this hilarious line:

I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hara-Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!

Still cracks me up however many times I hear it. If I had to rank them it'd be MGS, MGS2, MGS4. I'll add in 3 once I've played it again because it's been a long time. PW as I say I've never played.

My order of playing goes: MG, MG2-Solid Snake, MGS, MGS2, MGS4, MGS3, MGS Portable Ops, MGS Portable Ops +, MGS PW, MG Ac!d, MG Ac!d 2.

@SimonK-

I love all of that Japanese quirkiness in the Metal Gear games. Plus all of the easter eggs they put in.

In order of playing I went MGS > VR Missions, MGS2 > Substance, MG Ghost Babel on the Gameboy Colour, MGS3, Ac!d, Ac!d 2, Portable Ops +, MGS4, MG, MG2, PW. I was listing my order of preference before though.

I have a load of surplus staff who would really help a new player, at the moment it's a few B rank Intel staff, one C R&D and the rest are all C Intel, pretty soon it'll be half B Intel and half C R&D, if you guys want to take them then please do, that way I can keep room for new recruits and start saving up another batch of Intel and R&D guys.

Speaking of which, does anyone have any idea what the MGS2 Easter Island statue figurines were about?

They were enemies in many Konami games like Gradius, Parodius etc.

I got my copy when it came out for ps3, still haven't opened it rofl

Played Pw on PSP and Vita, MGS2 on ps2 when originally came out, and MGS3 on ps2 last year.

Soo many games, not enough time.

I want 36hours days with still 8 -10 hours of work time, 10 hours sleep time and the rest for leisures

Wow, having only owned the normal version of MGS2 originally I didn't realise how much stuff was added with substance. So many extra missions and vr levels, keeping me going for hours. Some of them are really tough but also teach you a lot of tricks.

Think it's going to be a while before I even move onto MGS3. Trying to get platinum is tempting.

Well all I can say is good luck with that, the VR missions get seriously difficult when you get to MGS1 Snake, those missions are possibly the most difficult piece of videogaming I've ever seen in my life! The level before that is quite tricky too, I think that's Tuxedo Snake. I'm going to go back to the VR missions eventually, I'd love to be able to say I've completed them all.

The snake tales are a good sesh to do on mgs2. The monster one is odd

I loved those, they were great, the fact that they were a bit lazy actually made me like them more for some reason. MGS2 Substance on the PS2 came with a skateboarding mode too, it was basically Thrasher: Skate and Destroy (I think that's what it's called?) but with one map, Big Shell, and you could play as Snake or Raiden. There were Gun Ciphers you could destroy and a few other things to do but I can't remember it all that well now.

I was a little disappointed that MGS3 didn't include the nightmare mini game nor the Ape Escape mode, but I got over it by playing MG and MG2 instead. They were surprisingly good, if a bit annoying in that you could quite often exit a room to find a guard looking right at you in the next area.

Yeah i've read that the MGS1 Snake ones are really tough, only got as far as Raiden, Ninja Raiden so far. 40% complete but I do have the 50 1st places. Surprised myself how good I was on some but the forced first person ones are really hard.

Oh and Snake tales i'm stuck trying to get Emma out of the gunfight, so annoying.

Just digging this back up gently to say that as no one took my offer of free mid-level staff (how DARE you) I ditched the lot and I'm no longer keeping any, but if you want or need some S rank staff (except for combat unit) then let me know, I'd be happy to go Fulton you some or get you to join me on a mission you haven't unlocked yet to do some Fultoning of your own. I have loads of the vehicle capture missions to do now and they're both pretty dull and tense at the same time so I'm looking for other stuff to do while I procrastinate. So far that has involved searching for ZEKE AI and participating in random co-ops while waiting for some ludicrous weapons to develop (including a 3 metre long PTRS-1941 anti tank rifle which is casually slung over the character's shoulder when being carried, a minigun and a fully automatic shotgun, most of which I'll never use). It's starting to wind up in terms of new stuff to find but I still can't put the game down... It's one of the better MGSes in my opinion.

Bearing in mind none of what you just said makes sense to me I'm guessing you're talking about Peace Walker?

Just received my copy for ps3 today. Great memories. The only disappointment is that there are no trophies for metal gear 1 and 2. Would have been a nice touch to get a trophy or two for them. Might encourage more people to experience those two classics.

Well I just stated playing Peace Walker yesterday and I have to say...I really don't like it. Far too confusing and intricate with all of the base, weapons, staff etc. I also don't like how it's split into separate missions with rankings etc. I know it was originally a portable game but I still would have preferred a more classic MGS experience.

Overall really not liking it at all, don't even know if i'll bother completing it.

I was put off it at first too with the whole base building thing, but then I accidentally really got into it and now I've got 100 hours on it and I think I need to start again if I'm to have any chance of getting certain emblems. I wish I could trade all my staff with myself though so I can get a head start... That's kind of putting me off the idea.

Well, that and the fact that it's pointless now anyway, I mean I'll never 100% the game so I might as well try and get the trophies then give up. I mean, one of the requirements for proper, true 100% completion is 1,000,000 camaraderie points, given that I've played some missions where I've gotten just 75 points that's going to take a long, long time! I'm only on about 6,000 as it is.

Yeah, I'm not doing that. I'll get the platinum and move on. Sigh.

The game isn't so hard to platinum as you might think. I will tell you where you can find the best S and A rank soldiers: RnD: Extra Ops 49 (in this mission you will find 2 S-Rank Intel troops) -> Complete Extra ops 91 first; Mess Hall: Extra Ops 46 (in this mission you will find 1 S-Rank Mess Hall, 1 A-Rank RnD, 1 A-Rank Mess Hall soldier and numerous B-Ranking soldiers of various units) -> Complete Extra ops 45 first; Medical: Extra Ops 26 (in this mission you wIntel: Main Ops 08ill find 1 S-Rank Medical P.O.W.) -> Complete Extra ops 70 first and finally Intel: Main Ops 08 (in this mission you will find 2 S-Rank Intel troops) -> Complete Extra ops 27 first.

Another thing, you can trade the soldiers that you have now to exchange with your best soldiers (I only found out about this later in my playthrought), most of the extra ops combat missions are basically the same with some exceptions, for example: different vehicle or more soldiers but it's pretty much scripted but if you need help just search some videos on youtube.

1,000,000 camaraderie points doesn't take too much time to get as you might think, for me it took me 2days and I got the trophy earlier for some reason but you need to play with the same people over and over again for several hours to boost your camaraderie points otherwise you will lose them.

Oh no, I think you misunderstood, when I say '100%' I mean doing everything in the game, not 100% of the trophies. There's a trophy for 20,000 camaraderie which should be easy as that's a little over 3 times what I have, but the insignias for 250,000, 500,000 and 1,000,000 would take more effort. I've maxed out my five teams already (but thanks for the offer to help) and I don't think I have much left to do now, but I've been working on collecting all of ZEKE's AI boards, S-ranking all missions solo and co-op and also maxing out all weapon usage levels, but why bother if I'll never be able to get all the callsigns this late in the game? So, as I'll never completely finish it anyway, I'll focus on the platinum and move on instead.

I liked to story of mgs3 better. And the setting felt more 'stealthy' :)

I preferred MGS2 better primarily due the fact gameplay wise it stayed almost the same as MGS1, adding a first person mode.

Is this offer still open? I need more people for R&D and Intel. So far all my fultoning has resulted in me getting E/D class staff, a handful being B to A.

I haven't played in ages, I think I'll get back on it, possibly tonight. I've heard you can't trade if the rank gap is too big, though, so S rank for D/E might not work out, however we could do co-ops on missions with high rank guys for you to Fulton if you want? I'd have to remember which ones they are, though.

Either suits me. I don't mind.

I'll find out what the best missions for R&D and Intel are and send you an invite if you're on when I am later on, then?
