Irrelevant, right? Wrong. The Korean ratings board, who has a surprising record of accuracy, revealed that it has rated a new collection of Metal Gear Solid called The Legacy Collection. Here is the screen grab of the rating page:

What is included in the collection? If Kojima's image is of any indication, it will be Metal Gear Solid, 2, 3, Peace Walker and Metal Gear Solid 4. Also of note is that the Snake on the upper left(I am assuming that it is the MGS one), is of HD quality. So will we see Metal Gear Solid 1 in HD? Only time will tell.

Source!

Top right is definitely MGS1, Snake's haircut isn't as messy as it was in MGS2.

If mgs1 is included in this collection, I hope it is the original version (or a HD remaster). If it's the twin snakes (GameCube version) then no thanks.

@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN
Checking.

And I'm with you F1, if it's an HD re-release of MGS1 I'm hoping it'll either be in it's own engine with better textures (though I'm quite sure that's impossible) or a modern engine with most of the controls disabled, first person shooting and a moveable camera would make the game far too easy like The Twin Snakes was. Also TTS was just ridiculous. If it's not an HD re-release then I most likely won't buy it, unless some awesome extras are added such as, I don't know, MGS1's VR Missions disc.

If it is HD MGS1 that's great but kind of annoying they didn't get it done for the HD collection that I already own. I'm not going to buy all the other games again just for that in HD.

I'd happily admit I'm a sucker for MGS. If this is just the PSX version of MGS bundled with the HD Collection and the updated MGS4 I'll probably pass, but if it also contains soundtracks, MGS HD or MGS: Integral/VR Missions... I'll be all over it. If it's reasonably priced.

I really miss the detective missions in VR Missions, and that one with Genolla, that was hilarious.

See?

The dark ones and the first person ones were the worst. Then you go the combination of the two. Ugh!

Oh man, agreed.

Do you remember the ones where you had to destroy targets with grenades? They started off easy enough, pretty much like real life grenade ranges, but as you went up in difficulty you had to cook them juuust right because the targets would be floating, moving and appearing/disappearing. I think. It seemed that way anyway but I haven't tried them since Substance first came out.

I also seem to recall one where you had to rescue a bowl of ramen from a whole load of enemies and they gave you a PSG-1, but obviously to get a good score you had to use the PSG-1T, which was even worse because if you didn't get a headshot they wouldn't stop for a good 10-20 seconds or so.

And on top of all that, the controls really weren't very good!

Yes please - not having MGS in the HD collection is always what put me off.

The biggest worry for me with regards to an HD version is: Will they give in and give MGS an updated control scheme, or will they stay true to the original and give it deliberately gimped controls? I can't think of a single game since the PSX days that had a fixed overhead camera, left/right aiming (with auto up/down) and the ability to look through the player character's eyes, but not shoot from that view. I imagine today's audience would react badly to that, but all they'd need to do to make MGS an absolute walk in the park is allow first person aiming. I mean what happens when you come up against Sniper Wolf? Would they just stretch the corridor to make her impossible to see without a scope, put an invisible wall up in front of her which disappears after you go traipsing off to get the PSG-1 or would they just allow the player to kill her with a pistol almost immediately?

The Twin Snakes was criticised for this, so maybe they wouldn't repeat the same mistake, or maybe they'd add an option for 1998 controls... Then again I could be overthinking it completely. Maybe this isn't even going to include an HD remake!

I played them again with the HD collection, I doubt i'll ever finish them all. Yeah one of the latter grenade one has yuo using the launcher and you have to aim about 50ft down at a huge area with moving boxes. Could never do that one.

The controls issue would be an interesting debate but I think they probably would leave them basically the same. I remember playing the Gamecube version and it just felt so weird having basically the MGS2 controls and even things like lockers. It was just wrong.

That's weird, not enough that Kojima is making new MGS he also needs to revive old games ?? What is the reason?

Money :grumpy:

MGS for ps1 has this magical feeling and no HD version is going to beat that.

There's no such thing as too many Metal Gear games.

Edit: Kojima did say with the Fox Engine he wants to re-invent the entire MGS series...

Maybe I can shed a bit of light on the game, seeing as Konami has formally announced it today.

The collection will include all eight Metal Gear games released to date:

Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid VR Missions
Metal Gear Solid 2: HD Edition
Metal Gear Solid 3: HD Edition
MGS3 will include MSX versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker: HD Edition
Metal Gear Solid IV: Trophy Edition

The collection will also offer two Ashley Wood graphic Novels.

“We wanted to give Metal Gear Solid fans the opportunity to experience the series from beginning to end, all on one console,” said Tomoyuki Tsuboi, President of Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. “With the collection’s multiple titles, players can truly see how Metal Gear Solid evolved into the critically acclaimed and beloved franchise it is today.”

The collection will be made available in June for North America and South America.

Well it looks like I have to buy it since I said I would if it had VR Missions in it. I suppose I'll have to force feed my HD Collection to my brother who has somehow managed to avoid playing a single MGS, but my MGS4 was a limited edition so I'm keeping that. And my copy of MGS, missing the manual and in a cracked case though it may be, has a fair bit of sentimental value.

Edit: Missed the North/South America bit. Hmm.

I was kind of hoping this would be coming out on next gen consoles. I can already play all of these games* on my ps3, so there isn't much point in buying this.

*apart from mgs1's vr missions.

From official MGS FB page :D

We're proud to announce that METAL GEAR SOLID: THE LEGACY COLLECTION will be coming to PlayStation 3 this June! This is the premiere way to experience the series with METAL GEAR SOLID 1-4, Peace Walker, VR Missions, and the Ashley Wood digital graphic novels all in one exclusive package. "Like" this if you can't wait to relive the MGS saga from start to finish this June!

Strange how they are making this a Sony exclusive when the last collection was on Xbox as well.

I assume it's because they already had a version of MGS for PS3 on the PSN and MGS4 was exclusive. I doubt they wanted to try to port MGS4 to the 360 at this point.

For the HD Collection, MGS2 and MGS3 already had Xbox ports to work off of. I guess Peace Walker probably took some conversion effort though.

The only thing wrong I find with that Legacy Collection Poster is that Solid from MGS1 is holding the wrong pistol. Where's mah Mk. 23?
