Ha, my first house was a volcano also! I made a cave in the volcano though.

I liked having a cave home, gave me much more room, and it's easier to hide than a giant factory/compound. For the sake of Tekkit, I built a compound with separate buildings doing separate things.

Wrong, it's a modpack with tons of separate mods in it. You can use it or not, your decision. All vanilla minecraft elements are still there.

You will have to download it, but it has its own launcher so you can still play on normal servers also.

Like dr slump said, you don't have to use all of the tekkit stuff you can pick what you want to use. I choose to not use a good bit of the stuff because I think some of it takes away the fun of gathering resources.

Anyway Matty96HD is my Minecraft name 👍

Also, would iPhine headphones with the mic on them work as a temporary mic for my computer? I was thinking of just plugging them into the input slot.

No it won't work that way. You'll need a headset with separate mic and earphone connectors.
