Lancer Evo 8.5

So the next evolution of the Lancer is nearly upon us. The 8.5 has an expected release date of February 2004. Get your name on the waiting list now!!

Not to clear on the improvements over the old version, but if my Japanese translation skills serve me correctly it should have a 41kg weight reduction over the old model. The one pictured looks like the RS version to me, but I stand to be corrected.

Images from 'Best Car' magazine, Japan.

So chaps, what do you think about this...?

I like it. Cant wait to see some numbers on it. I got use to the look and like it now. Mostly due to the kid down the block who drives by my house in an 8 every day ...

We still won't get it, so why bother? What's the point of coming back to Canada, Mitsubishi, if you don't sell the most important car in your lineup? Tossers.

If they sell it in the US, I guess it would be a fair trade off. Since people from the US have to go to canada to get cheaper medicine, you guys have to come down here to get the better Mitsubishi :P...

I'd rather have a 6 or.....any other Evo EVER.....but you know if Mitsubishi makes $$ off of kids with bad taste....more power to em.

Couldn't ageree more...My one dream car of all time..not a Bugatti not a mclaren....a TME Evo VI like that GUY WHO HAS ONE ON THIS THREAD WHO SUCKS!!! BURN!!!!!! no j/k

I dont like the looks the Evolution is Evolving into. I would much rather take the looks of a V or VI. The front bumpers were more "jagged" w/ side vents, and the hoods were more agressive.

i like the evo 8's front, but i dont like its whole rear, the rear window goes down too steep. i like the evo 6's rear better, the tail lights look better too.

I'm excited about the Lancer line - Evo surpassed expectations, which scares the hell out of me because Japanese companies still have no idea how many Americans will pay for something like this ('02 WRX tripled Subaru's expectations, remember, and that was after years of US begging to get the car). In 2004 we're getting a small wagon Lancer in both a base and "Ralliart" trim - Ralliart model sedans and wagons will have a 162hp 4-cylinder, and start around $18000 which carries some of the Evo's kickass value. 2004 Lancers will also get an average redesign to incorporate some of the Evo's styling cues and capitalise on its success.

(PS - 12-year-old members: we've seen it with the 7-series, Z4, WRX, and now the Evo - not only does the GTPlanet community not care about your stylistic opinons, but the manufacturers and the buying public care even less, evidenced by the huge sales figures for all of those cars. Can't you tell your parents what you think and then just shut up?)

I like it, and if it's lighter than that would be great. It seems the Evo keeps getting larger, So if it's lighter that would be a step in the right direction. I prefer the Evo VI TM edition, but I like the nose on the VIII.:D :D

M5, would you stop reffering to the 7 series, the majority of the GTP community who replied to that in the new 5 series thread said they liked the 7 series styling, you're just pulling these GTP opinions from your azz.
As for the WRX, I always liked that, never once did I say it was ugly, so your whole indirect comment towards me in that area was wrong too....And the Evo 8 continues to NOT look better than any of the prior evo's, but infact much worse...."evidence are the huge sales figures"
Maybe if America got some other versions of the car they wouldn't go out and rush to buy the first one availible would they? That's why the WRX sold so well, because it was exclusive...Same for the Evo...So don't act like the public thinks it's the best looking car on the market, or the best looking evo, because there are plenty of people who would rather have a 7 than an 8......

(-PS- To the people who need to stop trying to hard: Stop trying to be a martyr, the evo 8 doesn't have better stylings than prior evo's and you know it, so you can stop trying to make seemingly infantile remarks to boast your own opinion on why some have sold and some havn't.)

You obviously haven't heard of a little thing called Opinions. ;)
I agree that the Evo V and VI are better all around cars ( lighter and better lookin' ), but don't jump down peoples throats just because they like the styling of the VIII.:odd:

You're right. In fact, I've only heard favourable things about it! Nothing bad yet!

Yeah, and nor was the comment towards you. Learn to read.

That's why the WRX sold so well, because it was exclusive..

Didn't have anything to do with performance?

Same for the Evo...

Agreed. Performance is not a factor. Just 'exclusivity.' Despite having about nine competitors. Sounds really exclusive! 👍

No - actually, your own opinion dictates the 8 is worse than previous models. That isn't fact. And quite being so ****ing pre-occupied with styling. Guess what? It's a minute consideration when buying a car. And that's my opinion. Don't like it? Boo-hoo. Nobody cares.

It is though....M5...Show me one test where the 8 beats the 7......I just want to see ONE.......Because the #s sure as hell don't lead to the 8 beating the 7.....

As for the LOOK of a car being a minute consideration....Why deal with a M5 then? you can get better for 70,000+ that don't look as nice, but perform alot better

According to Mitsubishi themselves....The Evo VIII weights 3263 lbs.........
the Evo VII weights from the neighborhood of 3050-3090...I've yet to find an official Number.., so with that 200+/- lbs and the Same HP, (Foreign model of course, USDM makes less 5 less HP......271....And 9 less ft lbs of TQ, than the Evo VII......So from the looks of it, the USDM Version has NO chance of beating the Evo VII)

200lbs heavier, with the same #'s, same tire sizes same tires same brake sizes same rotors....Sounds like a better car to me

-sarcasm-

Check the European version.

And before you say 'we dont live n europe...... we live in usa' let me just point out that without an Evo 7 in the US, the Evo 8 has no predecessors with which to be compared. The European Evo 8 has both the Evo 7 and Evo 6 for comparison, and it trounces both of them.

No you can't.

Yeah that's true, I read the review comparing the EVO8 to the New WRX Sti in Topgear Magazine. They said the handling had considerably improved over the previous evo and a whole load of other stuff. Oh and that the 7 had a rediculously small gas (Gas? i'm pandering to you ****ing guys, it's ****ing Petrol) tank. The 8 is an improvement over the 7 and this is coming from the country that has seen a fair few evolutions of the Lancer.

ok....I've compared the 2....And the Evo 8 is still heavier than the 7 with the same power...so explain to me how it's better...seriously..

as for your whole "before you said we're not in the UK" I take offense to that, i've never once used such an ignorant argument I ALWAYS take into consideration the difference between countries, so I don't know what you're leading on about.

Check 'torque.' And any acceleration statistic out there. And whatever comments about handling you can find. It's better. :)

i've never once used such an ignorant argument

I'll be the judge of that...

ok, so you're telling me that those 7 ft lbs of torque are enough to make up for the 59 lb difference from the Euro model 8 and the Japanese model 7?

I still don't see how that shows how the Evo 8 trounces the evo 7..........still waiting for some proof

I've seen two reviews stating it, plus MistaY's. Believe what you wish - you aren't right.
