An escaped monkey surprised shoppers when it showed up at an Ikea store in Canada wearing a fashionable coat.

Shoppers snapped photos of the dapper-looking seven-month-old Rhesus Macaque after spotting it in the Toronto store's car park last Sunday afternoon.

Photos of the animal in its shearling coat went viral after being posted on Twitter.

The stylish monkey was reportedly brought to the store by its owner and left in the car while they went inside.

But Toronto Police Staff Sergeant Ed Dzingala said the "smart" animal figured out how to escape its crate, open the car door and make its way to the store's customer pick-up area.

Security guards cornered the scared creature until animal services arrived to collect it.

Officials told CTV News that the monkey's owner had come forward and had been charged with having a prohibited animal.

That's one smart monkey. You know you have to put a lot of that IKEA stuff together, you have to be pretty swift for some of it...must be good with tools...

Owners thought process: "I need to go to IKEA. Should I take the monkey that I own illegally? Yes, yes I will. I'll just leave him in the car. No way he can get out."

WTF?
