Latest Fifa/Madden. Games of that ilk.
I wish reviewers came down harder on basically roster update games.

Think Madden/Fifa have averaged 9/10 for the last few years for doing nothing.

FIFA'11 was horrible too. Can't speak for Madden, didn't purchase it this year. Although I will say that I liked that they focused more on improving the gameplay for '12, and less on features. Whether that worked or not, I can't say, but I remember reading it.

All the first person shoter games are way overrated. They are nice with good graphics, explosions, flishy flashy stuff but in the end it's the same bloody thing from how much, 15 years? I mean, the same thing from Doom, Duke Nukem 3D era just with better graphic, and multiplayer. I'm not saying fps can't be interesting but they don't have the "WOW!" effect anymore. At least racing games are taking advantage of steering wheels and rigs so the situation is quite different.
For fps it's time to move into Virtual Reailty or something like that. LoL :)

Another one for me is Metal gear solid 4, it's like marmite, you love it or hate it.

Didn't press the right buttons for me.
I won't moan about the long cut scenes as that's well documented. The game play felt awkward and old hat.

Suppose Nathan drakes smooth moves and human emotion has upped expectations another level now too.

Probably gonna get flamed for this.

Black ops was the best COD in my oppinion, mw2 was ok but nothing special.

Black ops is whole different expierience in 3D so dont dislike the game until youve used it to its max.

I didn't like black ops, I like the MW3 series, especially the story line.

MW3 made everything come together, it was amazing.

Fable III is the most overrated game I've played in years.

How anybody gave this travesty anything above a 5/10 is beyond me.

Call of Duty as a series is overated. I know many others mentioned it but it is overated. MW2 was horrible. I mean the series doesn't completely suck but it us the same thing year after year

I doubt you've even played them all. Your calling COD 1-8 overated. Unless you had an xbox or ps2 you probably havent even played COD 1 or 2.

COD and the majority of sports game simply because 90% of the time they're practically the same game (except for the occasional year where there's a big change in the game-play).

Call of Duty 1 and 2 were great but after that, the franchise went downhill pretty fast. The newer CoD releases are just about the most overrated games, to date.

Also, Fallout: New Vegas. It's great in a lot of areas, but it sucks so badly in others that I seriously can't see how it's ever gotten such high scores, even though I don't think of it as a very bad game, or anything.

Fable. Seriously, the whole franchise. Maybe I'm just not into Peter Molyneux' games, but the Fable franchise has always, in my opinion, gotten more praise than it deserves. All this talk about your decision impacting the games so much and whatever, and it never felt any different than any other game with some different, scripted in-game story paths.

Gran Turismo 5. I know, I gotta get some flak for this, but it just didn't live up to its predecessors, nor is it demolishing its competition like it should be.

Crysy 1 and 2. Those games seem to be primarily tech demos, really. They've got some nice gameplay elements here and there, but what they're famous for is their looks and that's it. I just don't like this "graphics > gameplay" mentality these games have seemingly been created with.

GTA IV, Saints Row 2, Black Ops, and a few others. All are good but they could have been better.

There are a few franchises I never really "got", like i've not enjoyed any NFS game since the PS1 days (loved 1-4 and the Porsche one wasn't bad)...Hot Pursuit 2 on the PS2 was kinda odd, and since then, all the kinda "street" ones they did and a couple since, i've played demos but I just really dislike the feel of them, the physics just seems really poor, it feels like driving a tank or a hovercraft.

Liked the cinematics of the recent demo of The Run but other than that, it also sucked. Both the cars just felt really unresponsive, I felt like i was spending 80% of my time desperately trying to keep the car away from the edge of the road.

Another franchise I never got is God Of War. I like a degree of freedom in such games, and love to explore, but those games seem to be all about set pieces, like playing a part in a movie. That concept can work, but not so much when it's dressed up as something else.

I also bring this back to physics, I like my third person games to feel kinda solid, where the main character feels literally steady on their feet (Tomb Raider being a good example) but GOW and so many other games nowadays, your character feels like a sprite, having little real interaction with his/her surroundings, often running on the spot, running against obstacles and bouncing off of them etc. Often the animation seems pretty poor too, it's all a little manga-style and less than immersive for me.

Still, different strokes for different folks!

I agree with you there. I never got into G.O.W . Never got into mass effect either.

The xBox360 online experience for the original GOW game was one of the greatest things I have ever experienced. I will never forget it.

I think your going a bit drastic here. If you'd like to come play Battlefield with me playing like you did with Duke Nukem 3d it'd be one miserable experience. War games now are turning into a virtual reality game with how immersive and realistic they are becoming. Racing is being innovative by bringing in steering wheels??? I had a wheel for GT3 and how long ago wad that? With BF games you can use a joystick to pilot a jet or helicopter, parachute out and use a gamepad to drive a tank and then switch to keyboard/mouse to shoot somebody. They've pushed gaming ahead a lot more than people would like to give them credit for.

Well COD1 was PC only originally until they released it on PSN and Xbox Live recently. I've played all of them except MW3.

The tank /helicopter /fighter whatever you find in nowdays fps it's far from realistic, for instance Black Ops when you "pilot" the Sr-71 Blackbird, you just press 2 buttons on the pad and that's it. In Battelfield you have lots of cool intro videos but at the end of the day with the F-18 it's all about pressing "Y" button for this "RT" button for that and you are flying. I can't see the realism and virtual reality you are refering to. Todays steering wheels are much improved and racing simulators are a new experience now compared to some years ago. I agree fps are still interesting but I can't see where all this massive hype come from.

I wasn't talking about COD. Try out Arma on PC, especially Arma 3 which is soon to be released... Incredibly realistic and it is a virtual reality. Your virtually becoming a soldier and war is an exciting thing for a lot of people who haven't been there.

Fallout new vegas I thought did not get as much press as it deserves. I really enjoyed it :D Was not as good as 3 but still good :)

Think you meant to post in the under rated thread matey.

FIFA, It's never been better than PES but people have suddenly decided it is out of nowhere. I can't remember ever losing a match of FIFA vs CPU on the 2nd hardest difficulty, the sweet spot for Football games.

GTA IV , Saints Row 2, Black Ops, and a few others. All are good but they could have been better.

Really? GTA IV got 10/10 from IGN and 10/10 from OPM UK. Though it is a little overrated. Fun to play though. 👍 :)

Easily its Madden. Thankfully the last few games have been noticed as not having any new features and seem like simply "just a game being released yearly because it has to be."

To me GTA:IV was overrated too. I never really got into the story and would groan every time Niko would talk about wanting to change his ways and then 5 minutes later you're killing everyone. Then there were the other annoyances like the cover system and the cell phone calls every 2 seconds. Also, the story felt weak compared to past GTAs and the handling on the cars always felt odd to me. Still not a terrible game though but I definitely don't see why it got such critical acclaim.

Got to agree that GTA4 was overrated, it never got me the same way San Andreas did. Sometimes great graphics seem to be at the expense of gameplay :(

Sometimes when at the top the only way you can go is down.

Still a great title with a lot to do offline and an online addition to boot.

Vice city being the choice for me. I'm not into this HD remake malarky but that would tempt me.

Madden NFL and Halo series' are always the first to come to my mind.

I've always wondered why they didn't just do a roster update via a patch - hell, I think they could charge $20 for it as DLC.

Scratch that, I know why they don't do it that way but until sales go down, there won't be any reason for then to change...

Not sure about Crysis really, I mean the gameplay on those games was pretty solid regardless of its graphics (Specially the first Crysis, there are pretty good moments in which the player gets to decide how to proceed giving it a good sandbox approach without compromising the experience, unlike COD and the latest BF iterations).

Apart from that, I have to agree with that Fable bit, is just so amazingly overrated considering the vast superiority of some western and Japanese RPGs these days.

Other overrated game I have to pick is Gears of War 3, I really liked the first GoW because it was still somewhat interesting and at some degree original, but GoW2 and GoW3 are just silly, I mean the storyline in those games is mostly broken, the mechanics are the same and the whole style/theme doesn't go away from the brown-ish colour filter. Yet somehow it gets the somewhat good scores considering that is basically the exact same things with a few new thing like the playable locust hordes, I never give importance to scores but that game should be lower than whatever 8s or 9s reviewers give these days to big budget games.[/Rant]

In my opinion COD4 was the best in the series, and they have become a little stale since as there has not been a dramatic improvement year on year. But if you compare MW1 directly with MW3, you will notice there are significant differences (Whether they are all improvements is debatable). The only thing that is mostly the same is the graphics. All COD MW games run on the same basic engine and follow a storyline set over a small number of years, so there are going to be big similarities by default.

Grand Theft Auto 4 was probably the game I felt was most overrated. A massive disappointment.

I thought GTA4 was widely regarded as a disappointment? It was neither as in-depth as SA nor as ground breaking as GTA3, it was just an average game if you compare it to the high standard set by previous games. But as a stand-alone game, it was excellent. Too bad it had the GTA moniker attached which gave it far too much hype and expectation.

Well COD1 was PC only originally until they released it on PSN and Xbox Live recently. I've played all of them except MW3.

I believe COD1 was on the PS2 also, probably exclusive at the time. My Brother has 3 COD games for the PS2; Finest Hour, Big Red one and COD3.

One game I find overrated is Halo 3, but I could never quite put my finger on why. Maybe I prefer the more realistic shooter, but Halo 3 just didn't do anything for me. I can't judge it based on the previous games as i've never played them. As a new player to the franchise I just couldn't see what all the fuss was about (This was when it first came out).
