Wich car should I pick for this race?
I feel like a very unusual car, just for fun.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Maas

I believe someone somewhere used the Ford SVT Lightning truck, that's fairly unusual.
The Ford Focus is probably able to win this race, doing it in an FF-car might be fun.

Yep, the Lightning and Focus RS are both capable in stock form, as is the Lancia Stratos, but that's only if you're insane. Indeed, there are an awful lot of "unusual" cars that can win and give a close race - others I thought of from browsing the car list, but can't guarantee either success or a good race, because I didn't test them, are the Buick GNX, Chevrolet Silverado SST, Nissan Skyline GT-R Pace Car, and Trial Celica. If you're interested in classic cars, I'm sure many American muscle cars are capable, and maybe even the Jaguar E-Type.

The trial celica will win, if a Focus RS would. ;)
So will the pacecar.
But... I am insane, so maybe a Stratos will be exciting...

I don't recommend it. One of the very best 200 A-Spec point drivers had this experience. :scared: Or so he says; I've never quite believed everything he's claimed...

You know, without the Opel Speedster in the field route_66 would've had a much easier time of that race. :sly:
That's why lineup fishing can be important.

Check out Post#7 in this thread for a complete list of AI opponents for this race, along with their power ratings.
Also click the link for the pit strategies too and you should be able to work our which cars your ride of choice is competetive with.

Supposedly the Alpine A110 1600S '73 has been able to win this race in stock configuration too, but I'd imagine that'd be against a weak AI lineup.

Depending on what you're thinking of trying, you should try to aim for a competetive AI field, but bear in mind that some of the AI "Rabbits" turn out not to be, due to useless pit strategy. The Renault Clio, one of the NSXs, the Ford Focus and to some extent the Opel Speedster all fall foul of tyre wear issues by trying to go one lap too far on worn tyres with disasterous consequences!

I've used a stock Spoon Civic here to win the race with an FF drivetrain and it was staggeringly enjoyable. 👍

Feel free to run some ideas (cars and AI lineups) by us here and I'll let you know what I think your chances are as I've got a pretty extensive knowledge of who is fast and who isn't having spent a long, long time fishing for a lineup that I could beat for 200 points in a stock used Acura Integra. (Sadly I never found it despite over 24 hours of trying. :grumpy:)

Do you plan to run a stock car, or will you add modifications?

I will run it stock, without any modifications.

I thought about a Lotus, an Elise.
I thought it would be a fun race against the wannabe Vauxhall.
I also thought about the Lotus Carlton and the Mercedes 190 Evolution.

I'm tempted to have a go with a standard Focus RS in a week or two against the Opel. I've been doing time trial competitions on another forum so hopefully my skills are now a little better for it. I've got exams and coursework to do at the moment but I've been wanting to try this race for while now in a FWD car. Only concern is front end tyre wear as we all know how GT4 is concerning wear rates with front drive cars.

I'll do some practice runs mid next week and see how my times are before doing the race on the Saturday or Sunday.

Perhaps this post will help?

He doesn't mention tyre choice, but from my experience with the Spoon Civic you can get away with S3s on the rear as they'll still not wear nearly as quickly as the S1 fronts that you'll have to run in order to get near to 3 laps between pitstops in an FF drivetrain.
S1 fronts on the Civic started to go reddish around Galgenkopf on the 3rd lap of each session, but the pit time at Nurb' is short in relation to the amount of time that the AI can, and do, lose by trying to push their tyres 1 lap too far.
Take tyres at every stop, select to take fuel but note how much has been used and stop refuelling immediately. Do this for a couple of stops and you should be able to calculate how many units (and leave yourself a safety margin) you need to run for a 3 lap stint. Once you drop below that threshold on the gauge, only fill up to that level (plus the safety margin you're allowing.) The AI always fills up to maximum at every stop, but you can gain a little time by not refuelling at all during your first 3 or 4 stops and then only topping off the fuel you actually need from there on in. You'll also benefit from marginally quicker laptimes while you're light on fuel. 👍

Another car just popped into my mind; the Mazda 6.
I'm convinced the MPS can do it, but maybe, just maybe the 5-door version can do it?

I can't excess my PS2 for a week or so, so can one of you guys please check this?

Thanks in advance!

Unmodified I doubt it.
The Mazda doesn't have near the right Weight to Power ratio (what the game actually displays instead of Power/weight ratio! :dunce:) to cut it for this race.

Actually, what am I saying? Maybe it does.
I've also done this race in a ~260HP 4WD stock car.

Best thing to do would be to check the WPR of the Mazda, I'm not in front of GT4 at the moment, but I believe it's about 5.2 - 5.6 off the top of my head (probably wrong though!) and I do know that the Mazda has an appetite for front tyres that is scary.

If you can pick a suitable AI field you may get away with it.
If I recall correctly, the Audi S4, Merc CLK, both Holdens, the Lancia, the Fiat and the Alfa are about the weakest contenders here and the Renault will make a complete hash (losing about a minute & a half) of every 4th lap rendering him less of a threat than he first appears.

Almost any car from 150-350 BHP in stock form is pretty mutch unusual way to complete the task. (In my opinion)

MadMax

It was mentioned above but I ran it in a stock SVT Lightning (with oil change). Provided a very close race against the EVO, I ended up winning by little over 1 second.

How was that on tires? I can't imagine the rears lasting too long in something like that.

Only if you tune it. It's definitely a great-handling car, but it's not powerful enough to beat the tuned up opponents in stock form.

I ran S1's all the way around for the entire race, except when both me and the Evo had to pit with 2 laps to go, then I put S3's all the way around.

Rear tires held up pretty good. It was the fronts that wore out first. Still able to make it a full 4 lap run on tires, unless I was really pushing it during the run.

Uhm some other possible candidates:

Audi A3 (tuned)
Audi S4 (tuned)
BMW 330i

Smallhorses?
Thanks! :)

Uhm, Have you done any of your own research or are you just hoping we'll do it for you?
Have you looked at the WPR of any of these cars?

The only cars I can truly vouch for are the 4 I've driven here and I can make rough guesses based on cars with similar drivetrains and WPR ratios to those that I've driven.
If you're going to post possible cars, at least put their specs up too, that way I can have an educated guess at your chances. ;)
Simply putting "(tuned)" isn't much help. Sure an A3 with NA3 or a big turbo will win this race, but it won't be "unusual"!

Specs for the cars:

2003 Audi A3 3.2 quattro:

Stock HP:262 @ 6,300 rpm
Stock P/W Ratio:5.706
Stock HP:262 @ 6,300 rpm
Torque:247.94 @ 3,000 rpm
Stock Weight:1,420 kg // 3,124 lb
Tuned Weight:1,207 kg // 2,655 lb
Drivetrain:4WD

Which Audi S4 are you talking about? 2003 or 1998? Here are the setups for both of
them:

1998 S4:
Stock HP:264 @ 5,800 rpm
Torque:294.23 @ 3,600 rpm
Stock P/W Ratio:5.720
Stock Weight:1,510 kg // 3,322 lb
Tuned Weight:1,253 kg // 2,757 lb
Drivetrain:4WD

2003 S4:
Stock HP:363 @ 7,000 rpm
Torque:317.74 @ 3,500 rpm
Stock P/W Ratio:4.573
Stock Weight:1,660 kg // 3,652 lb
Stock P/W Ratio:4.573
Drivetrain:4WD

2005 BMW 330i:
Stock HP:272 @ 6,600 rpm
Torque:232.32 @ 4,000 rpm
Stock P/W Ratio:5.607
Stock Weight:1,660 kg // 3,652 lb
Tuned Weight:1,377 kg // 3,029 lb
Drivetrain:FR

Maas, power to weight ratio isn't the only factor to consider. 4WD cars are generally not good choices because of their extreme front tire wear. Really, this thread is a bit pointless by now and could go on endlessly - what you need to do is just pick some cars you think are "unusual" or "intriguing" and do a lap with them at Nurburgring. Compare those lap times with ones you find in race reports on this race, and pick the car in which you think you will enjoy yourself most for the four hours, whether it be for the fun of driving the car itself or for a close race with the AI. In the end, it's you that's doing the race, and you need to decide for yourself what produces the "best" race.

No Austin, I know that.
I wasn't the one, neither was anybody else, that was concentrating on WPR.
I also know about front tires wearing down fast on 4WD cars.
That's why, for every endurance race I do with a 4WD car, I buy a VCD and place it to 40.
That makes it more of an FR car.

But, you do have a point, this thread is gone out of hand.
Mainly because I don't have a PS2 at home for now, and the Car List Guide isn't finished yet.
So. It's a lot of guessing, and I'll have to wait for my PS2 to come back.

Kill this thread please.

That's actually quite interesting. The Lightning isn't 4WD, so I'm curious why that would be the case. Modelling error?

The Lightning isn't 4wd, but it's still a pickemup truck, with most of its weight on the front wheels.

Or it could be driving style.

I'm not sure why either, but there are certain FR vehicles that CHEW front tyres.
Just ask anyone at SFGTP2 that drove the Ford Falcon XR8 '00! ;)
