Multiple Screens

A long while back there were rumors the PS3 would support multiple screens, so that games like GT5 could have multiple views.

Does anyone know if this is still a possibility?

It's possible if you connect 3 PS3's with each other, which is pretty expensive.

It's not the same as a true peripheric view but it comes close to the real thing. I hope it's going to be possible in GT5. Looking at the left and right view, I think it's not going to be possible with the dashboard view or PD has to modify the right and left LAN view

I can see how it works, I just can't see why. Sounds (and looks) a bit like a waste of money to me, unless you and your mates joined together to connect your consoles and TVs.

It's absolutely not a waste of money. :)

It works perfectly with GT4. It's so much more realistic to play with 3 monitors than with only one. The sense of speed is much higher because the surroundings (on the left and right sreen) are flashing by. You can actually see the entire track as you're driving, so it's so much easier to turn in at a hairpin. The replays are a lot more interesting to watch etc...

:)

As much as I like the idea of having three screens, you can't do anything about the overlap between screens of the frames of the monitors.

Ideally one large widescreen monitor would be the best bet.

Sorry, but a thousand bucks for each PS3 and however much it costs for each screen purely so you can see a little to either side of you when you're racing?

To me that's a waste of money because you're not really getting much more for all the extra dough you're putting in ...

Just think of the folding@home power of three PS3 though? :D

If someone gets 3+ times the use out of their system because of the three screens, then technically yes, it's worth the extra money.

Or 3 beamers. :dopey:

Do you race?

That's your opinion. Not mine. I don't regret one moment that I spend all that money on three ps3's and three monitors. ;)

It doesn't bother when you're playing. You don't even notice it. :)

Huh?

Does GT5P work on that multi screen setup? I guess not at moment right?
EDIT: Update: kikie's pic was made to show how it "might" look:

I think that if someone reallywants to and has the $$ to, then someone can have 6 PS3s and screens. There's the front three views, and there's the back three too. For those who haven't notice, you can look towards the quarter panels at the back, as well as through the back window. And of course, the front, and two side windows.

Yes, it does work. Look more closely at kikie's pic in post #7:
I have to say that I didn't use LAN settings to achieve what you see in #7. It is just a photo of how it "could" look in GT5 if it supports surround gaming. It's actually not a surround image at all. Just 3 cars at the same place on the track with the middle monitor viewing the centre view and the other 2 => left monitor = looking left. Paused each game and took the photo.
=>right monitor = looking right.

It is not surround because it's not possible in GT5p demo

Sorry if I misled you.

One thing how do you connect the PS3 up
Read this:

https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showpost.php?p=2787320&postcount=201

You need a router or a switch, cat5 straight cables and connect the ps3's through the router or switch with eachother.

Looking at your photos of GT4 kikie, you don't get that "overlap" I mentioned above. I didn't relise you had "faked" the GT5P demo photo above with the "overlapping". So I'm guessing in the final game this won't be a problem, and it will look similar to that of the GT4 images in the other thread.

To try and minimalise the amount of screen border between each screen, you could set the two side monitors back a touch so the the centre one over lapped them slightly reducing the width of the screen frames a touch. I've done this at home with my dual monitor setup. Every little helps :)

As for being a waste of money or not. If kikie has the cash to spend on this setup, then good on him. If I could justify it, I'd get a three screen setup as well.

We could do multiscreen in GT3 and GT4. So, there's no fear we'll be able to do the same in GT5 (maybe even in GT5: Prologue). It will cost, but racing was always expensive sport.

Thanks for the advice! Never thought about that. I'm going to try it later on. + REP

:)

I did what you suggested and it's perfect. Thanks!

Ah, well you get extra credit for making it look quite good. :)

Like others, I suspect GT5 and possibly even GT5:P will have multi screen LAN support.

BTW: Great idea overlapping the screens, and it also looks better with now that you have less toe-angle on the outside screens. 👍

I hope GT5 prologue (and GT5 ofcourse) will have surround (visual) support. The question is; which part of the game will support surround gaming? In GT4, you can only use it in the *arcade* section and without AI.

I hope GT5P and GT5 will support it in simulation mode and online as well.

Oh, also, I found a solution for my disproportioned image. I've set the PS3 setting at 720p and the cars look normal. You can hardly see the difference between 720p and 1080p.

You can hardly see the difference between 720p and 1080p.
That would be the case since your monitors are so small (or unless you sit very close to them).

Good to hear you fixed the issue. 👍

But they are not small, I guess. They're all three the exact same size => 24 inches. I can see the difference when I look at the numbers on the dials (or white letters in general). With 720p they are not as sharp and white as when I use 1080p.
