MULTITASKING 101: Multitaskers on Multitasking Do’s and Don'ts

.............................................................................................................................................

Regarding making the most of your time versus doing nothing sometimes...I'm a carpe diem guy and all that, but isn't there a quote that says "time enjoyed is not time wasted" or something like that? I don't think you can really "waste time" if you are doing something that makes you happy...but then we get into the realm of another thread currently circulating in the Rumble Strip.

And this is what is at the core of the discussion here - in fact as I detailed in the latter part of the OP.

Time is Life. It's not a renewable resource. Like money. Or Water. Or Energy.
We can make money. Drill for water. Create energy.
We can't make time.
Time stands on its own - and what we do with it is what we live. What we are. With whatever we're given.

I know young people, who have terminal illnesses, and will pass before me. I look at them and think - MG, I'm older than you - and yet will possibly outlive you. It's a feeling of helplessness that no power on Earth can change the passage of time. It will not stop, will not pause, will not wait.
It will slow down. It will speed up. But it will constantly change.
In fact the only constant regarding Time is that it will change.
Unlike the unchanging constant of Light.

In between Time and Light, we are caught alive. Multi-tasking furiously to catch-up, get everything done, finish it all, so that we can do everything that needs be done before Time stops, and the Light changes. :)

I attempt to do multiple tasks at the same time often, but in most cases it doesn't work out as well as I'd been imagining myself, especially when I'm totally concentrated on one thing... as far as I'm allowed to remain in state of half-concentration where my attention is not perfectly caught on a single stuff yet(with distractions), some miscellaneous tasks like doing some schoolworks slowly with interval pauses, while browsing on GTPlanet or some other interesting websites on my mobilephone, is still easier and suits me okay, while thinking of other multiple affairs being occupied with one thing is a mess for me, much less to actually put them into action. :(

Now we can text while driving without texting while driving.

Did you know that? :D

Edit: Alright, I'll give the game away: there is an App that blocks and replies to texts one gets while driving.

Some things never change - teens being struck and killed on the road is not something new; we've lived with this problem since a kid distractedly threw themselves under the wheels of cart while chasing a kitten.
But the causes of distraction have changed.
With the burgeoning wealth of technology that teens drape themselves with today, there is even more to distract them as they walk to school. The most recent survey by Parachute/Fedex brings this to light even more glaringly.

"Nearly three-quarters (72 per cent) of those say the driver wasn’t paying attention and a third say (30 per cent) the driver was going too fast.

However, 20 per cent of teens surveyed admitted they failed to look both ways before crossing the street and 8 per cent say distractions with their phone, music or other communication device were factors."

A quick heads-up then - if you are reading this on your tablet or phone while strolling to school or hurrying off to the pizza joint for lunch - look up please, and take steps to keep yourself safe.

The world might be a better place if you survive. 👍

Why kids feel the need to continually browse their devices while traveling on foot is beyond me. Then again, I've little contacts to send and receive text messages from.

The statistics that came to light were about pedestrian/auto mishaps.
In fact, the statistics for pedestrian/pedestrian collisions/accidents/broken bones, etc are actually very much higher.

Apparently today's teens (as well as many young and older adults) have busy eyes and figures on their phones while walking around - and that has led to some really bad connections.

Maybe kids these days forget basic survival instincts of making sure they aren't going to walk into something or into the path of another moving vehicle.

Maybe kids assume drivers are always going to stop if pedestrians cross the road? I notice bratty kids in my area who do this. Seems pretty inconsiderate to drivers.

Even if the pedestrian may not be at fault for being hit, I don't think it's worth taking such a risk for the expense of getting hit. Should always make sure you're aware if you're going to move in the way of another moving object; person or car. Maybe I'm just overly cautious, but when I'm cycling on small roads, I periodically check behind me if any car is coming up. Even if it's a low-traffic street.

A comment on the bolded part: Yes - I have to be specially considerate sometimes to make sure the kid who strolled in front of my car has absolute confidence in my 'adultness' at not making bad things happen.

Yeah, it's a major problem. I was about to go through a stop sign and a woman came running though it with her headphones on and a cellphone literally 3 inches from her face. It's just bothersome for me. Another thing that is crazy is people complaining about phones being too big to properly use while driving. I was in an AT&T store for a reason I can't really remember and I was near a guy that was complaining about the Note series and how it was too big for him to navigate while he was in his car. Another time, my friend started complaining about his phone and his ****ing winter gloves being too thick to use with his cellphone.

I rarely use my phone in my car to drive. If I do have to, I wait till I'm at a red light to respond to whatever text messages I have to, which there is probably a small amount of them. If I'm moving, I don't even bother answering phone calls because that split second you look down to answer or text, you could likely have an accident.

As for walking around on my cellphone, I don't do that much, and I also look both ways before crossing, unlike some jackasses.

Another thing.
I have problems with listening to music really loud in public, but I guess that's because I like being aware of my surroundings.. whatever.

My body has a natural self protection system. Whenever I start to type up a text or something I become unable to make forward motion because typing and walking is impossible.

I can't walk and use a phone. Navigating the screen is bloody difficult for me when walking so sending a text is out of the question. Would I do it on the road? Nope. Because my phone is always in my bag.

When I rode in the past I would use my phone while riding but only to check key map points and check current mileage on a tracker.

If the information I'm getting is credible - there is a Bluetooth glove out now that is a phone; you make that old hand gesture with pinky and thumb at your face like using a phone, and it is a working phone.

I ignore my phone when I'm driving. Actually I tend to ignore my passengers, too.
If I'm expecting an important call I find a place to pull over quick to take the call - I'm in luck if it's the parking lot of a Timmies. Now I get to grab a beverage, too!

This is the same reason I dislike being drugged or intoxicated - I like a very sharp view of my environment. It can be quite tasty when the palate is clean.

A Bluetooth earpiece can fix that problem . . . but then you turn your phone once again into an electronic leash.
Because I have taught people that I will not answer right away, they know better than to yank my chain for immediate attention.

I can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Great feat and something to jaw about . . . but I know a fourteen-year old lad that can do all that as well as carry a backpack, listen to music on his iPod, while both hands are busy with a book of Sudoku puzzles - one holding it, the other a pencil. All this on the way to school.

I've told him if he doesn't watch it he's going to end up with his nose in more than a book. :)

@photonrider on the point about driving: I'm the same when it comes to the cell phone and driving. If I'm meeting up with someone, I call them first, make sure they know where to be, and be on my way.

I ignore my phone while driving. Unless it's going off like crazy then I'll pull over and answer/call back.

As for multitasking, listening to Mory Kante - Yeke Yeke (Hardfloor Remix) while typing this :)
