Oh my gosh! I'm listening to some tracks from the U2 Pop album ... how did I miss this when it came out? INCREDIBLE!!! I'm going to buy it for myself for Christmas. And maybe get a couple other new ones to get my collection back up to snuff.

There is a short bass solo on the Smashing Pumpkins "Zero" single. I forget what song it is though. It's instrumental ... "This one's for Johnny" or something ... man it rocks! There's also a cool base solo on one of the middle songs on the second CD of the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness album. I think it's XYU, but I'm not sure.

Instumentals are my favorite. Intstumental rock ... I love the sound of the music, but the singers are usually stupid. If they'd just shut up and jam, life would be so much better.

Well, I saw Phil Collins, and then Pink Floyd, so I figured they cancelled out.

Some of his early stuff was okay - 'In the air tonight' (the original version) was a great song - very haunting.

I'm trying to think of what's in the CD satchel in the car:
- Radiohead (best band in the world, just amazing, groundbreaking stuff)
- The Doves (check this CD out, fantastic guitar songs)
- REM (am I the only guy in the world who liked Up?)
- Sigur Ros (Icelandish band - stunning album. No idea what they're singing about - fairies and stuff, apparently)
- U2 (Pop is classic, light rock - but I prefer their stuff from around Zooropa - but The Joshua Tree and Unforgettable Fire are fantastic)
- Low and Dirty Three - two bands that got together for an album 'In the Fishtank', great country feel, reminds me of that cover of 'Sweet Jane' by Cowboy Junkies)
- Faithless - bit out of character for me, I normally steer away from the DJ and electronica, but I like this guy
- Midnight Oil - go the Oils!!!!!
- Ghostwriters - project band of Rob Hirst, the drummer from Midnight Oil - regularly play at a pub 100 metres from home
- Coldplay - the song 'Yellow' from their album 'Parachutes' always makes me nearly cry
- Jeff Buckley '- Last Goodbye' does make me cry
- Soundtrack from 'Deadman Walking', especially the songs with Eddie Vedder and Nurat Fateh Ali Khan
- Elvis Costello
- Neil Finn (ex Crowded House)
- Tim Finn (Neil's brother)
- Assortment of classical

Just a brief summary...!

What ticks me off in music? (let me get my asbestos underwear) - manufctured pop that seems to fill the top 50 - just manufactured, soulless rubbish, no depth. I really don't understand what people see in - it's like they missed the whole point of music. I really think music should provoke thought or emotion, it's like a common language.

I agree that manufactured music sucks, but it can still provoke thought and emotion. My thoughts are "this sucks", but my emotions can be excitement, motivation (is that an emotion?), maybe a thrill. Some of it is good driving music. But manufactured love songs? I don't think so ... they're not writen for anyone, so they have no soul of their own. Boys 2 Men, Back Street Boys, Spice Whor.. I mean Girls, New Kids on the Block ... it's all a bunch of rubbish.

Now Pearl Jam, Blues Traveler, Hootie and the Blowfish, Nirvana, Weezer, Ben Folds Five, Smashing Pumpkins, ... there are some guys writing about something they care about.

How about female musicians? Who are your favorites? I listen to a bunch, personally ... Elastica, Dido, Natalie Merchant, Sarah McLachlan, Jewel, Garbage, Bjork, No Doubt, ... I just really like female voices. I like them better than male voices.

i like Jack Off Jill some what

What is your favorite guitarist of all time?
Its a toss up but i am going to have to say................Kerry King

I must admit I hadn't factored in anger at the actual music in my comments!

Just leaves me cold - I just think it's rubbish.

Now:
Pearl Jam- great band, although I think their later stuff's really good, bit more mellow. I love 'No Code'
Blues Traveler - sorry, never heard of 'em
Hootie and the Blowfish - just don't do it for me. 'Artificial indie', although they do write a catchy line
Nirvana - I really miss Kurt. Tortured, hard to listen to, but ultimately so rewarding. 'Smells like teen spirit' - that opening guitar riff, how can you not bang your head. God I love that song. 'All apologies' - great song. When you look back it, it was always going to play out the way it did.
Weezer - love their stuff, (yes, I liked 'Mollusc') - I know they did 'Undone the sweater song' but did they do that 'Haircut' song. Great slacker stuff. New album sounds pretty good.
Ben Folds Five - yup, with you on that one, and his solo album's good. Did you know Ben Folds lives in Adelaide, Australia?
Smashing Pumpkins - Great stuff, loved 'Adore'

Not much to argue with there.

You know what I didn't list, and I love the album - Icky Mettle, by Archers of Loaf. 'Web in Front' is a classic, but I have no idea what it's about.

Another artist I love is 'Smog' - great lyrics. 'Dress Sexy at my Funeral'. Fantastic.

i'd have to agree on the female voices thing......but for me, U2 is still the best band in the world .......if you think about it, all their music is about peace, love, and God with the exception of a few songs (Discotheque) .....i think Bono writes some pretty intense songs and sings with alot of passion and meaning .......if i was on a desert island and could have 1 CD to listen to, you know it would be The Joshua Tree ........and if i could have 2 then i would also have Achtung Baby (i think ONE is the best song ever .....many musicians have admitted to crying the first time that they heard this song) ............."Walk on...you got to leave it behind"

Yeah - they had a really 'golden' period with those three albums, Joshua Tree, Achtung Baby and Zoo Station where Bono was writing some of their best stuff - their experimentation with grunge was, for me anyway, probably their most successful guise.

The new stuff's good, great pop-rock - I suppose after writing that stuff you'd want to write some reasonably light stuff. 'Beautiful Day' is pretty superficial, but they've put it together so well you can't help but get caught by it.

Hey, now THAT's a good idea. I'll pass it on to my radio DJ friends.

"If you were stuck on a desert island with a solar powered CD player, what one CD would you take with you?"

I'm all about some Joshua Tree. But if you toss into the equation, "What one person would you want to have there with you?", it would be a girl of course, and the CD would probably be the first CD from Decade, Jacopierce's 'best of 10 years' album. It's got some good love songs.

Or better yet, make your own. What 75 minutes of music would you put on it? Hey, now there is a discussion worth having!

I've got a 60 disk CD changer so all my CDs are in all the time, and the bands are together. So I just start on Vitalogy and let it run through Yield. I haven't bought the last couple of albums yet, guess I should get on that ... I love just about everything Pearl Jam has released. I rarely skip tracks.

Blues Traveler is pretty darn cool. John Popper (lead singer) plays harmonica and guitar. He's a big dude with a big heart and writes some really good stuff. He also jams with other bands quite frequently, so he's spreading the world about his own band. I love it when members do crossovers. It gets both fan collectives together, and they start sharing interests.

Hootie and the Blowfish ... maybe I'm attached to them because the 9th grade girls sunday school teacher used their first big album as background music for a video she made of her class's outings. 20+ babes that all happen to be my friends (:

Nirvana, we'll all miss Kurt.

Weezer, Weezer for me goes back "My Name is Jonus", "Buddy Holly", "In the garage", and "Only in dreams". The new stuff is ok, but not real high on my list. You're right, it's good slacker music (:

Ben Folds is FREAKING AWSOME. But same as Weezer. Good start, not impressed with the new stuff. I need to pick up the solo album though. I didn't know he was in Australia! That's another reason I need to go live there a while.

Smashing Pumpkins haven't released a bad album. My favorite songs are "Frail and Bedazzled", "Obscured", "Bury Me", and the traditionals... 1979, Today, Disarm, ... yadda yadda. You know you've arrived when you get the title "Rocker" Billy Corgan. (:

I don't listen to Archer's Loaf. I guess I should, every says they're awsome. And I've never heard of Smog. What kind of music is that?

- No, I liked Up too.

- I like Radiohead. "The Bends" and "OK Computer" are awesome, but "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" are a little too heady for me...if that makes any sense.

- Jeff Buckley 0wnZ j00. :)

hell yeah dude, Master is probably one of my favorite songs ever, i like metallica's softer stuff the best though.

as far as what everyone has posted

U2- eh so so, i like some of the edge's guitar stuff
Blues Travler-oh jeez

Anyone listen to Vai or any body like him?

What about blues?

Yeah, they're tough albums to get into, but they're worth it - I've pretty much had Amnesiac on repeat play in the car for the last month, there's one or two tracks I can't get into but the rest are great. I rate 'The Pyramid Song' as one of my best songs this year.

Kid A's probably the more approachable of the two, but again not the easiest going - it's not the accessible guitar of OK Computer, that's for sure.

They're exploring new areas - gotta respect that...

I respect it, I just don't enjoy it very much. I gave both albums more than a few listens (I bought them both when they came out) but I just never got into them. :( Oh, well.

I wasn't taking a shot - I know exactly what you mean. It happens sometimes, and if you don't enjoy the music you really get no pleasure from discovering the album.

I got that with the Smashing Pumpkins album 'Machina/the Machines of God' - loved 'Adore', just couldn't access Machina - it gets a spin occasionally, but I don't really listen to it, it's just background noise. I'm not critical of the album, just doesn't speak to me.

Yeah - that wasn't a bad album - but I do wonder if there was a double album's worth of material on that.

I haven't had that out for a while - must dig it out of wherever it's stored(ah, the joy of moving).

Wow, this became a rather popular thread. And everyone's posts are long. Cool, just what I wanted out of GTPlanet (:

I've also been listening to:

Mighty Mighty Boss Tones
The Rentals
Beck
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Queen
Sister Hazel
Toadies
Bush
Stone Temple Pilots
10,000 Maniacs
Jeff Buckley
Counting Crows

The Toadies first album (Rubberneck) was INCREDIBLE. "Tyler" and "Possum Kingdom" are amazing songs, and the rest of the album is pretty awsome too.

The Rentals are a spin off from Weezer. I like The Rentals better than Weezer too ... but it was the same deal with just about any band ... their first album rocked, but the second was a bit of a let down.

does anyone listen to Dream Theater?
I am pretty sure if you arent a musician its kind of hard to get into them because its more technical than an actual emotion, its almost like learning what the best can do aka the guitarist, that man is just a beast on the guitar, i suggest just downloading some songs if you want to listen dont buy a cd because you may be disappointed, a lot of crazy stuff but wow is it sooooo good.

How about older stuff?

Favorites-Zeppelin, Doors, Hendrix, Beatles,Who, Cream etc.
