It's amazing how much you remind me of my good friend Pete. He travels the US West Coast and has similar experiences. You didn't by chance used to be a Rescue Swimmer for the Navy?

Ah, orange trees. I'd like to have fruit trees in my yard, but I fear the pests would be unbearable. Banrock Station looks like a pretty cool place. You'll have to take me there when I come to visit (:

Well, air travel to these regional areas is a bit of a pain in the arse here. One of the major carriers here (Ansett) collapsed last year and took a few regional airlines with it.

Air travel between the state capitals (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and so on) is good, but flights to regional centres are generally once or twice day, in small planes, and expensive.

So that, combined with Australia's bizarre personal tax rules, mean that we tend to drive to these places. It's generally cheaper to drive rather than fly/hire a car, we need the miles on the car for tax purposes, and you can take more stuff. You just need to take an extra day or two of leave to cover travelling time - but it does mean you see the country from the road rather than from the air (with your nose in a book, or half asleep leant against the half closed window).

And no, I have never served in any form of military capacity. I just like driving around! :D

Everyone in Australia: You've seen the picture, now start looking for him!!! Someone has to find him, ... Sydney's not THAT big! And how many people have Liberty RX's? So if you're in Sydney, and you see one of these cars, look at the driver!!! If it's Vat, intentionally ram him. Tell him M5Power told you to.

He looks like Jack Nicholson.

By the way, the pictures were fabulous (personifying the American stereotype of Australia: Flat, dry, and hot).

Every other person in Sydney has a blue Subaru Liberty RX!!! You saw that photo of the carpark at Maroubra Beach!

I've watched most of The Simpsons episodes!

Is that directly from The Simpsons?

Yes - Sideshow Bob Roberts - when Sideshow Bob was mayor. Remember - it was a play on the Jack Nicholson 'A Few Good Men' speech.

Sheesh!!
