Well, I thought I'd give a bit of a recap from my experience at GT Academy 2013 UK finals.
Firstly, a massive thanks to everyone involved with organising the event; HPS Jardine staff, Sony, Nissan UK, Silverstone, BRDC clubhouse staff, the Film crew, driving instructors and all the other people who make the whole event and the national event at Silverstone possible.
As mentioned earlier in this topic, I only managed 18th and got in as a reserve, and that took a lot of time for me. Having been away from GT5 for so long due to a broken PS3, my wife bought me a new PS3 slimline to enable me to try and qualify on the GT6 demo.
I naively assumed any events on the day would be carried out on GT6, but it didn't take me long to feel comfortable with GT5 again. Getting used to it, I finished 19th in the first time trial, then 14th, then 12th in the super-pole. It was very tense, but I had successfully finished 14th overall and advanced to the next day - I had already well exceeded my expectations! đź‘Ť
The pedals were a slightly different angle but very easy to get used to. The wheel though was very different, especially the shift paddles. I am used to keeping my hands in the same place on the wheel, so shifting when turning meant that with the static paddles I didn't get used to it. They also require a bit more effort to pull to get a gear change from. But no hardware issues for anyone that I could see so perhaps it's the right choice for such an event.
I did quite well on Day 2 first event, finishing in 14 place, but it wasn't to last long as the next combination of grand valley and the touring gtr just didn't suit my driving at all and I unfortunately finished 13th while the top 12 went onto the finals.
Whilst gutted, I was then didn't feel so bad when I saw how much the top 12 wanted it. A lot of them had put in a lot of effort into fitness that alone meant I did not deserve a top 12 position. I believe the top 12 were the best top 12 of the day...I was very, very happy with 13th!
I stayed the whole time and whilst I didn't see the driving, media or part of the fitness tests, I shouted as much encouragement to the final 12 as I could during the press ups and the bleep test.
Very impressed with everyone and still a bit dazed to have been involved in such an event where everyone was so good. Gutting for the guys who didn't make the final 6 but that's life and motorsport is no different.
Can't wait to see hot GT Academy unfolds
