I was semi-inspired by our RedDragon to post a thread on the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). Chances are, I may not be updating this thread too much and passionately describing this new league, but I will have this thread up for discussion of the NWHL. According to Wikipedia, the NWHL was founded in 1999 and ceased in 2007.

The NHWL consists of only four teams:

* Boston Pride
* Buffalo Beauts
* Connecticut Whales
* New York Riveters

I'm pretty sure with more interest, this league will expand. Maybe we'll see more Midwestern teams and maybe some Canadian teams. Canada does have its own pro women's hockey league- the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL). Who knows? Maybe there will be a team in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area playing NWHL hockey.

For more on the NWHL, visit http://www.nwhl.zone/ . So if anyone want to discuss NWHL hcokey, here's your thread.

[UPDATE] edited the main page link to the NWHL.

Cheers for starting this thread:tup: I'm planning on following the NWHL as closely as possible tbh. Really excited about it starting :D

Right now my team would have to be the Pride :bowdown:

The first games of the NWHL occured today as the Buffalo Beauts hosted the Boston Pride, while the New York Riveters visited Connecticut to take on the Whales. Both games featured the same ending scores as Boston defeated Buffalo 4-1 and the Whales beat NYR 4-1.

Next Sunday the Whale heads to Buffalo while New York has their home opener against Boston

Yesterday was the 2nd weekend of the NWHL season as Boston traveled to New York to take on the Riveters while Connecticut went to Buffalo.

The Pride stayed unbeaten with a 7-1 thumping of New York while the Whale also kept their perfect season alive by winning 5-2.

Next Sunday the Beauts play host to Boston while Connecticut travels to New York to take on the Riveters. Expect another post then! :)

Poking around Twitter, the NWHL Women's Outdoor Classic ended in a 1-1 tie. The game was at Gillette Stadium, home to to the 2016 NHL Winter Classic. Great for these ladies to showcase their skill on such a great stage.

The game between the Boston Bruins at the Montreal Canadiens had its own auction to help out Denna Laing of the NWHL's Boston Pride. Auctioned items included things like autographed game-worn jerseys and other material. Laing was paralyzed during the NWHL Winter Classic. The Bruins said they would donate over $200K USD to help in Laing's recovery.

I wish Denna Laing the very best in her recovery. Very cool of these two rivals to come together for a cause like this.

The Boston Pride are the inaugural champions of the NWHL. They won the Isobel Cup over Buffalo Beauts in their playoff series to become the first champs of the new NWHL. All congratulations to the Boston Pride. Poking around Twitter, I saw the Isobel Cup, and it's a pretty nice looking trophy. Not as lovely as the Stanley Cup, but quite lovely.

Speaking of Twitter, I read a tweet stating that the NWHL has expansion plans. None of those in the United States, however- these two expansion teams look to be in Toronto and either Montreal or Quebec City. I don't know my Canadian geography too well, but I do know it is around those ways. I do think other established hockey cities will eventually get teams. Because I mentioned RedDragon being an inspiration for me to make this thread, I do hope to see an expansion NWHL team represent the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

Recent fantastic, amazing NWHL news is that Buffalo Beauts player Harrison Browne is the first out transgender athlete in pro sports. He is listed on the Beauts page properly with his name and his teammates and the league is being as respectful and amazing as possible. He has said that he is waiting until after his professional career to medically transition and has not started HRT at this time :) I'm super excited and hopeful that there will be an AMAB trans player drafted soon in the NWHL

This is great to see! Congrats to him, and best of luck. ^-^

I was thinking about this league and bring it back for discussion. The National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) has some games coming up this weekend. I edited the main link in the opening post to the NWHL to reflect its new URL.

Word has it the National Women's Hockey League will have its first non-American team in the 2020-2021 season. A new team in Toronto will be the sixth team in the NWHL. The other five are all American teams (Buffalo, Minnesota, Boston, Connecticut, and Metropolitan).
