Alright, here's the deal. I'll be acquiring my learner's license in a few days. Given the following, what car would you guys recommend?

I need a car that:

A) Runs.
B) Has body kits/chassis customization available.
C) Has at least a 2000cc (preferably V6+) engine.
D) Can conceivably keep up with the massive population of Asian boyracers around here. I.E., Supras, MR2s, FTOs, GTOs (3000GTs), etc.
E) Has readily available parts (i.e., no cars from 1950).

To give you an idea of what prices are like here in New Zealand, the average 2000cc 2-door sports coupe, used, costs around $5,000 USD. Lowest price is around $150 USD, highest is around $80,000 USD (for a Ferrari).

Go for a Skyline or older Commodore. Even though almost all older V6 Cdore are piles of ****, likewise for some Skylines, they will be more fun to thrash than some econo box

Yeah, I'll be buying it with my own money. :D

There are Commodores here, but no Satrias....unless it goes by a different name. The Mitsubishi 3000GT is called a GTO here, a few other cars have different names (like the Ford Taurus is a Ford Falcon here).

Regarding the Skyline, here's an ad for one, what do you guys think:

"Skyline 1990, s/w, 3 lt, auto, all good tyres, white in colour, 300,000km, work been done on motor, new wof/reg $850 ono"

That's about $450 USD, btw. 300,000km seems a little high, though...

Buy an 80's Lancia Delta Integrale Turbo

Should be around your price range. It will do 0-60 in about 5.5 seconds and handles like a dream.

damn those are sweet cars. to bad they weren;t here in the states

Sheesh, I got my learners 6 months ago and didn't get a car. But I did have a car that I could use, that I have to share with my sister.

But the car I'm looking at is a Toyota Soarer/Lexus SC400-300. The SC400 is a 4 litre V8, the SC300 being a turbo'd 3 litre I6. The turbo'd I6 puts out a little bit more power then the V8 does, but they're both around about 240 HP stock, if I remember correctly. But they're about $10,000 for a second hand '91. Keep a look out at http://www.autopoint.co.nz
and http://www.trademe.co.nz - if you want to buy over the net...

:)

Thanks for the links, Cobraboy...I'll keep an eye on those sites. :D

I'm actually thinking about getting a Skyline....they don't look too bad, for a cheap car. The innards aren't horrible either.

I wouldnt go for a turbo for a first car. Arent their insurance really high?
Ill stay with a V8 Commodore.
Go and check out that Skyline

If you could only hide the turbo ;). Thats kind of what they did with the Muscle cars here in the 60's and 70's. The Manufacturer would intentionally put a lower HP rating on the engine to lower insurance costs...

Im not really sure what cars are available in new zealand, and how the sc series is different there. But I think the sc300 here is not turbo'd, maybe it is. Anyway, an insane setup is the sc300 with a 5spd tranny and motor swapped from a supra.

dorifto

In regards to your guidelines, the SC300 current does not have too many kits (a decent one from Veilside that I liked), and the car itself can keep up with most racers on the street. I think you should avoid turbo powered cars as a first car. A second/third car would be a more reasonable time. If you could afford an Integra Type R, it's not a bad car to pick (despite being FF). The shifter is easy to use, and the car is pretty much tuned already. It's important to learn the basics of street racing/driving first in a lower power car before jumping straight into a high powered one (just my opinion). Once you're comfortable with a lower powered one, you can work your way up.

The first rule of street racing is not to do it :odd: :).

The second rule is to go outside in a lightning storm holding a 50 ft metal pole ;)...

You a tough one to please. Why waste the money for the show and no go. If you wanna keep up with those Supra, MR2s, GTOs, Skylines, whatever, you should not waste the money on thoseflashy parts. Make it a sleeper. It doesn't cost you anything and everything goes into the engine. Why just
conceivably keep up
when you can blow them away?

PS, don't be dumb and race on public streets. Do it in a controlled area such as a race track. You'll learn to control the car a lot better there with less risk of killing someone else.

Hahaha, you're kidding right?

Do you know how rare those cars are?

I'm not even sure if they made it out of Europe, let alone New Zealand.

This year i've only seen one HF Integrale and it was a 16v one as well.

Never said I was going to race on public streets. :odd:

There do exist tracks in New Zealand, that's where I'd do my racing. And I want looks AND power, not just looks. Which is why I'm not considering an FTO or an MR2 (they look nice, but they SUCK under the hood).

I'm also thinking of getting a Mazda MX-5 (Miata to you yanks :)). FR, light, small, good power, easy to mod. Good first car for beginner racing huh?

I wouldn't really mind a Holden, the only problem being that I'd have no where to put it ( full garage) and even when my sister does leave, the garage is pretty cramped at the moment (trust my dad to not bother with the garage dimension while it was built ) with a Fairmont and a Laser. So any car I get will have to be small, or I get a motorbike, which I wouldn't mind getting. Ahh! decsions (sp??) !

Excellent choice :D. Mkae sure you drop a second-gen RX-7 engine into it :). Then you would have those ego boosts when you burn some sports car with a guy and his girlfriend in it. If you could pull up next to him and yell out, " How does it feel to get burnt by a sissy car!

"Whats the retail on one of those?
More then you can afford pal, Ferrari
Smoke 'em"

:D. I'll do that with my Cobra when I get it. ;)
