Legendary Name Celebrates Comeback

The classic slogan "Nur Fliegen ist schöner" ("Only flying is more exciting") went down in the history of advertising, and applied to a car which has become a classic itself, the Opel GT. Now the Opel brand is reviving the legend with a new sports car that echoes the successful concept of its predecessor. The new two-seat GT features an exciting design with sharply cut lines, rear-wheel drive and a potent four-cylinder turbo engine with gasoline direct injection. The new roadster will celebrate its world premiere at this year's Geneva Motor Show.

The career of the original GT began with a bolt out of the blue. When Opel presented a two-seat sports car at the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show it came as a complete surprise, especially as the GT was a total departure from the prevailing design trend in Europe at that time. The curvacious lines were inspired by a new style of US-design, the so-called "coke-bottle shape". The styling cues included a low front-end with pop-up headlights, pronounced rounded wheelarches, a narrow waist in the area of the doors, and even shapelier rear wheelarches ending in an abrupt tail-end. Over 100,000 units were produced between 1968 and 1973, and the GT has since become a coveted collector's item.

The Saturn Sky is going to be the same car as the new Opel Speedster and Vauxhall VX220... I dont think a regular production car is all that special, espically when its available on both sides of the pond...

...I think the Kappa structure was designed to be both left and right hand drive just like the current platform that resides beneath the Monaro/GTO...

My god, just like with the original this is a total surprise. I woulda thought they'd leave the GT in the past now they have the elise-based VX220 (and the VX Lightning concept that shoulda been produced by vauxhall cause it looked sweet!). Kinda looking forward to see what it looks like when it is unveiled at Geneva, many manufacturers are going nostalgic these days, I wonder if Opel have stayed true to the original GT.

There will be a Opel version of the Sky - but since GM can't be arsed to build a RHD version the UK, Japan or Australia won't be getting it. I've read reviews of it and they say it's crap, so its no real loss.

What reviews were you reading? The Solstice, the same car as the Sky only with Pontiac badges, got pretty good reviews here in the US as a compeditor to the MX5. Although the Solstice isnt quite as good at the track (mostly due to a higher weight and slightly less tuned suspension), the Pontiac came through as a great value and really one of the first new American cars to be excited about in a while.

The Sky hasent gone into production yet, but the changes between the two cars will be somewhat minimal mechanically, but the exterior and interior will change a lot. They havent been particularly solid in whether or not the Sky will be sportier than the Solstice, but I would assume that it would be the opposite. The new direct-injection 2.0L I4 that pushes out 260HP is supposed to be available on the Sky when it is introduced, but I dont know if that is on the "regular" model or the Sky Redline...

People arent really to keen on a sporty/expensive, vauxhall/opel car. The Astra VXR isnt selling well at all even though its the most powerful than its main competitors by quite alot of hp.

People are ignoring it for the golf gti and focus st.

Sorry, i ment to say Solstice!

The review i read was from Evo magazine's US correspondent who went to the launch - he said it had zero steering feel, and gave it 2 out of 5 - as low a mark as any i've seen in that mag. He felt so strongly about it that he even told Bob Lutz just how much he hated it at the launch party.

Evo doesn't like the new Miata either. They're very picky in terms of steering feel, so while they may have a point, for 90% of the rest of us, it might be okay.

Bu then, most reviewers pick the Miata over the Solstice for steering feel anyway.

The VXR is an Astra. It may be very capable and hardcore, but the GTi gives 90% of that capability while still being supple and composed, while the ST probably has 95% of its track ability, while still having excellent suspension damping.

Can't wait to see a direct comparison between the Focus and the VXR on track.

...Funny that EVO Mag hates the MX5 when it seems like every other review I have read have said it is the best Miata, er, MX5 yet...

Same can be said of the Solstice. While it isnt nearly as "sharp" as the MX5 in terms of handeling, the extra power and the somewhat softer suspension setup give you a car that is useable both as a daily driver and a weekend track car... People love to have sportier cars like the MX5 and Solstice here in Michigan, but with the road quality so poor, we generally will pick a softer car because we dont want our kidneys shaken out of our sides when driving to work.

There's also the very real possibility of bias. Look at how CAR and EVO will rave when a new British model is released. The same can be said for the American mags and their take on the Solstice.

As for the NC Miata, I've read a fair amount of reviews that've said it isn't quite what it used to be, that Mazda has tried to take it too far upmarket. Though, any direct comparison has seen the Miata on top. Next year, it'll hard to argue with a 260hp Solstice, though...

Actually, EVO ragged on the Miata in their recent Car Of The Year contest, where a French car won the budget comparo (Clio Trophy, with the BMW M3 CS as a runner-up) and an American car won the supercar comparo (Ford GT).

They did the testing for the COTY over a number of days, with six or seven different drivers giving subjective scores for the cars. And the EVO guys drive hard... sometimes a bit harder than is sensible.

A lot of testers may have praises for a car at 8/10ths, but when you take the car all the way, things may be kind of different.

Like I said. What's horrible for them may be okay for most drivers, and what's merely mediocre may seem great to others who don't push as hard.

C/D said of the MX5 Miata in a recent comparo:

"Like the gen-one and gen-two Miatas, the MX5 still possesses a lot of suspension travel, no doubt the principal reason for it compliant ride... Insist on the $500 sport suspension, which includes firmer tuning, Bilstein shocks, and a limited-slip diff...Still, the MX5's structure isnt quite as quiver-free as the Solstice's, and the suspension remains somewhat nervous at the nose. Espically on rough pavement, the front tires hunt, theres a little too much bump steer, and tracking is just okay...The MX5 remains a kind of adult gokart- connected, direct, agile, and visceral, without being rough. It's components work in a BMW-like harmony, fostering a smooth, fluid driving style."

People avoid the Astra VXR because they'd all torque-steer into a tree.

Yeah UK publications are a bit biased when it comes to something british like aston martin and jaguar. They dont seem to be biased when talking about tvr however. Its probably because were the only ones that get TVR's.

oh... I love how there's dual exhaust on there and the whole thing looks cleaner than the US version... Thank GM. Great job as always.

have to say I like the tail on this a bit more than the one on the Sky...

:dopey:
damn, if that is the new Opel GT then I hope it shows up in the UK, that thing looks nice.

If we do get it in the UK it will be LHD only. I can't see why Vauxhall would bother trying to sell it, the VX220 wasn't a great seller but it was a great car - a lesser car with the steering wheel on the wrong side is hardly going to sell more.
