meh ... can't really like that car, totally uninspiring for me, even with the best photographer taking the picture and working on it. There's no "soul" in the SLS.

I've always loved the SLS AMG. That car is absolutely beautiful. What I loved most about the previous Safety/Pace Car was that sweet engine roar. Beautiful car!

In what sense?

I mean, Mercedes probably just offered to supply a branded-safety car and medical car which the FIA accepted possibly so that they could have a consistent safety car driver as well. It just made sense the same as when the FOM decided to swap from using to local broadcasts to making and selling the broadcast themselves.
If a different manufacturer offered to produce a safety car and paid for the privledge, they would no doubt get the chance too.
Before Mercedes, there was no standard common safety car, it was just whatever the circuit had, perhaps not always up to the job (though a safety car has relatively low requirements).

There's no special link if thats what you're asking, at least not as far as I know. Its just a simple contract. I guess no one else wants to or has the money to pay for such a contract.

I think Mercedes/AMG have held the role for some time, it surprises me that the likes of the big supercar brands don't bid for it; for the sake of managing the F1 cars when required. I suppose the only other brand whose adverising it might benefit is Volvo.

Well, they probably have multi-year contracts and I think Mercedes clearly have a good relationship and a large interest in F1 because of their successful races teams and now their engine supply.
Also, its only been in the last 10 years that the safety car has become such a marketing tool. Mercedes were just first there.

Just found this.

It's the ninth generation AMG and the fourteenth year of supply. At the bottom of the page is a list of all the cars used over the years.

I guess something else to consider - is that Merc not only have a seriously quick set of Saloons - but they also have a set of seriously quick Estates for the medical car...

So - whilst it would be pretty cool to see a Lambo as the pace car... you'd still need a different car brand to provide the Medical car - although - I guess that if it's lambo you could have an Audi RS6 or something...
