I thought I’d install Colin Mcrea WRC 2.0 (for PC) again + the Microsoft Force Feedback Wheel.
Alas none of my 5 PCs have Win98 anymore and Gates doesn’t support the wheel (drivers) anymore since 2002, thx Bill.

So I debate with myself, do I buy a PS2 or not. That actually went through my head for a couple of weeks. I quizzed colleagues on whether to buy Xbox, PS2 or Nintendo.
The Nintendo look a bit childlike so that idea was scrapped immediately. My hate “love” relationship with Bill decided in favour of PS2.

So there I am 30 May 2005 in a toyshop, big yellow box in hand containing a PS2 boxed together with GT4. For good measure I also throw in an 8Mb backup card and box containing the remote a 2nd DS2 and 8 Mb.

No idea what I’m letting myself in to. I find out after installing the hardware and firing up the DVD.
Oh my gawd, this controller should be called an uncontroller.
Next day I buy myself a Logitech DFP.

I’m sure I will get the hang of using a DS2 somewhere in the future, like I had to learn using a mouse in the dark 80’s.
For now though the DFP in 200 degree mode works like a charm. 900 degrees is too much work!
I have no knowledge of GT1, 2, 3 etc, no experience at all, a real novice.

Oh f :censored:k, what ????, you mean I have to take exams to compete in a race. But in RL have a motorbike and car license, for over 20 yrs, and I’ve taken various expert driving courses for both. I even went for my racing license recently.

Oh well, I might as well start somewhere so I “ace” all National B and A tests on my first try. Yeah dream on. :indiff:
No way sir, some take me ages to get just within the reach of bronze. I look at the times I have to beat to get silver and gold. No way man, I’m never going to reach that level of skill.

I remember a license test where I had to steer a Merc SLK 230 (old type) through 2 bends.
Jeez a wet towel handles better than this piece of s**t. Hit the brakes and nothing happens, I plough in to Belgium before it decides to react. I turn the wheel, and I can hear the German under the hood muttering “I vill not zurn ze wiels fur u, Dutchie”.

In RL I actually own and drive a new model Merc SLK AMG. It definitely handles much better than the PS2 version. Other GT4 cars I really like but they still made my life hell as I tried desperately to get Bronze.

Then I found this forum and spend hours going through numerous posts in search for the help I desperately need.
Some posts really helped me out, thx guys.
I particularly found the R3 button tip (switch on blue red stripes) for national A and B tests very helpful. This helped me to score silver on quite a few exams, and I even got 1 Gold. Wow !

The slaloms with the Beemer were, correction are, a nightmare, don’t think I’ll ever Silver those.

The coffee breaks are fun (for bronze). Till now I really don’t understand how you guys can Gold these.
PD please give me a snowplough with 20.000 hp and a very wide plough and I’ll turn your effing cones in to dust in 2 seconds. I’ll score diamond ! Go suck on Gold you w**ker.

Then there’s the Gymkhana track in Driving Range (I don't mean the one in coffee break), what am I supposed to do here. I see some cones laid out in a circle, that's it, yeah now what. Definitely help needed here. (Famine to the rescue ?!)

I have now completed B, A, IB and IA and have 15 driving missions under my belt and 50% of the specials licence.

For me quite an achievement but then I’ve only been playing for 6 weeks. I have a very long way to go till to get to some of the levels you lot are. But patience is on my side.

I returned to National test A6, the sponge Merc. Only to see if I can score Silver this time around.
I must admit that having played more of the game and bettering my skills have definitely made this Merc easier to handle or …………PD have switched my PAL version of the DVD for an upgraded one when I wasn’t looking or “ze Kraut zezided zo leve me alone”.

In the early races I was really happy to beat the AIs in an eight-nine point race.
Now a 25-35 point race is my new benchmark. So yes, I’m definitely improving.

The City Courses still give me headaches, there are too much Neon signs, buildings, lights, and blond babes in the pits distracting me from how the track runs. In NY I keep hitting the barriers at the end of the long straights. At Opera there seem to be permanent road works going on, 1 of the straights is halved in width by some red-white skirting boards. When do those ‘Frenchies’ ever finish this work, or can they be found sipping wine and consuming croissants, whilst eyeing the French lasses.

PD please install big signs “WARNING END OF TRACK”, “TURN LEFT (or Right) xxx degrees”.

In SS5 there are no / hardly any streetlights so I have no idea whether turn left or right and therefore have cost that city a fortune in road barrier repairs. Which idiot runs races in the night.

My car dealers love me because after every race they can sell me a new car cause I crashed the previous one in a race in attempts to win it, no I’m exaggerating there, it should read in attempts to stay on the d*mn track.

Some courses are in Reverse; why ?
I faithfully follow the white painted arrows on the road, as I was taught in RL so many, many years ago. So the arrow points left and I turn left and meet a barrier, which my car loves as it can wrap itself around a lamppost doggie style.
Turns out I should have taken a right turn instead.

This game has infiltrated in to my life in such a way that I wonder if I’m still sane.
Thankfully one of my colleagues also plays GT4 so I can vent some of my frustrations on him.

It’s now mid July (RL) and I’ve covered > 1800 GT days. I couldn’t figure out how that worked, weird 24hour clock PD must have, now I know.

I didn’t have a particular game plan but having completed 47% of the game I find myself developing some quirky habits.

Most cars I own are black except for some of the ones I win in races. Probably some thing in the back of my mind playing with me, most of my RL cars were, are black too.

If the 2nd hand dealers don’t have a black version I will buy new, I own all 4 ‘famous’ black cars, why I don't really know, and have > 9.5 million to spend.

If my bank account is at level X before I start a race and I need to buy a car and some upgrades I will continue playing the race until I’ve at least won back what I spent to enter the race and to get the Aspec points. Then it's Bob's turn.

At first I fitted the racing chip and exhausts, turbos etc, not all at the same time.
I never use NOS, for me that’s cheating. If you want to use it fine, I play my own game.
Nowadays I gain much more pleasure in beating the AIs in as near as standard car I can get away with. Much more fun in winning a race by 0.3 seconds than by 2 minutes. A win is a win whatever the time difference.
It definitely keeps me on edge.

My “impressive” stats at the moment are:
47.7% completion Gold 1 Silver 22 Bronze 51

Machine skill 94, Course skill 82 and battle skill 80, Wins 52%. Aspec 6462 and Bspec 8181.

What I don’t like about GT4 is that in some races 4 out of 5 AIs are more or less equal and 1 car seems to be ‘overpowered’.
E.g. 4 standard VW Lupos and 1 VW Golf V16 GTI Turbo Evolution 20 4WD.

If I join the race with my “superior” skills I either need a “F1 car” to beat the effing Golf, scoring a measly 1 point or I turn up in a standard Lupo, beating the other 4 and never get the 9 points because of the Golf ^%$^%$*^.
If I enter with a Lupo my win% goes down, if I back out get a better car, one that gives me a fighting chance, my win% goes down as well.

It would be nice if GT5 gave you an idea of what the competition is going to be like upfront so I can decide what sort of car I need to make the race interesting.
Edit: thx again Famine for pointing out the Preview in one of your posts.

I also have difficulty in reading the red coloured texts on my TV. No it’s not the TV (100Hz 34inch widescreen) and it aint my eyes either. I know it means trouble but difficult to find out how much trouble I'm in.

PD please change this to light yellow (or something) in GT5, DO NOT USE RED!!!!.

I’ve have yet to master cars like the Nissan R92something, They’re way too fast for me.
But hey, I’ve only just started. Bob seems to be quite happy with these though. Well he does have more points than I have.

I’m sure I’ll be able to handle these later on. The licence test 1 lap on the Nurb with the Merc I finally got bronze (<10 minutes). Now I can run the track in 8.40 in a standard Beemer M3. Yes I still near-total the car 4 times in 1 lap. It keeps my car dealers happy though. Thank god it’s not real money.

Anybody see the female german Racing driver 'beat' Jeremy Clarkson's RL Nurb record lap of 9m.59sec in a Jag. She was in an Ford transit van and ran a 10:06 lap (RL) on the (UK) Top Gear program. Wow.

I don’t have the NTSC version of GT4 so I will miss out on the Hot Rods, (are these any fun?) I’ve got Old Muscle Car race instead. (I hate loath the superbird or whatever that “car” is in the driving mission, the one with an oversized Subaru rear wing, looks like an shopping trolley)
I don’t seem to have Premium Sports Lounge race either.

Still to learn, 52.3% of the game, what LMP and JGTC stand for.

Anyways I’m gonna sign off now as I have a race to win (or not).

Yours truly,
A GT4 convert.

Dude, you need your own comedy sketch, your post made me laugh alot, especially about the germans. One you get the hang of it you will be golding this licenses. Welcome to GTP and welcome to our obsesion.

Excellent post, its great to see a new member do something other than post a load of single line threads that have been covered before.

Hope that we can help you out with any way you need, and I look forward to your future posts.

LOL! Glad to see you're getting the hang of it now.

Welcome to GTP, thats some post there took me a while to read it all. Don't hessitate to ask if you need help but be sure to check the read this threads at the top of the thread list some of thoes can be invaluable.

Hiya AMG_SLK & WELCOME to the Planet!
FANTASTIC read especially for your first post! So much more refreshing than what we've become accustomed to the last few months. 👍

"GT" IS an "Addiction" so just admit it if you haven't already & join in the Fun!!! ...O.G. :D

 still laughing! lol.

Anyways I realized that you are using 200 mode and in 200 mode in this game, the game still thinks it's in 900 mode and it makes strange things happen in this game (like rediculously fast responsiveness and turning the wheel to lock at 90 degrees is the actual lock on the car which causes plow understeer). Try putting the wheel back in 900 mode and only turning it 90 degrees or so either way. Because if you turn the front wheels too far you overcome traction and all the steering in the world won't help you. The key is too SLOW THE **** DOWN for the turns so that you don't have to turn it like that. You'll actually be faster in the long run. Who knows you may get a few gold medals. (I got them all hehe)

Also instead of turning the wheel more when you start losing front grip, try just letting off the throttle and maybe using a SMALL AMOUNT of brake to slow it down until it regains grip.

Oh yeah, and BRAKE IN A STRAIT LINE. This is very important because most cars absolutely will not turn while braking.

And as for the Gymkhana, haven't you ever heard of Autocross? I do it all the time in real life, and that course is very realistic as to how confusing and tight they really are.

Hello DUTCHIE!! 👍 :dopey:

Yeah I can understand your troubles with GT4, its not easy when you never played GT1, 2, 3. But play it with a FF wheel, it so much more fun and more reallife!

I hope you have the patience to learn the tracks and "feel" the cars than you will enjoy it very much.

Try to think as if you are driving in a real car, braking steering etc. Begin with a slow car and learn the tracks then try to get the limits out of the car in the bends. After that take cars with FF, FR, MR, RR. and learn how they react to your inputs.

"Every" car in GT4 drives different thats the X factor why we all love this game I think.

I also have difficulty in reading the red coloured texts on my TV. No it’s not the TV (100Hz 34inch widescreen) and it aint my eyes either. I know it means trouble but difficult to find out how much trouble I'm in.

Use an RGB cable. this will solve that and the image will be sharper!

Good luck in mastering GT4! 👍

Or a s-video, indeed the best improvement is for the red + orange colurs getting better defined!

Have fun with GT4!

Oh and consider yourself lucky to be able to discuss gt4 with a collegue. I switched jobs, no one at the new job understand the enthousiasm of a nearly 40 year old playing a game and buying a steering wheel for it :(

Thx guys for the responses, although I must admit some of the hints provided obviously are not available in licences, only in races but I’d figured that out anyway.

Sti04 - LMP JGTC, and all the while I’m thinking
Lame Motoring Person and
Joint Gathering for Tuning Cars.
Thx for the explanation.

Zonekill K2racer - RGB cable, alas no TV input for that (scart only) and S-Video installed early June. Maybe I need to sit closer to the TV.

Other suggestion was made to read the threads, I do, I spend as much time surfing these as I spend running GT4.
Something a lot of other members should do before posting “How do I xxxx questions”.

You should see the stack of printed pace notes on my passenger seat. GameFAQ helped out a lot as well. I only wish there weren’t that many one liners on these forums. One of the reasons I’ll probably never get to a level where I can post my own Avatar.

Old_Geezer – as mentioned above, I fully agree with you, too much one liners, are they perhaps trying to get as much P-points (post points) as possible to be able to get an avatar ?

I remember seeing a post on which car to use in K car competition. If he’d used search I’m sure he’d found the answer. Also some youngsters seem hell bent on getting thru GT4 in record time. To them I’d say enjoy the game and try out everything, show some patience instead. Ah if only I were young again.

Rsmithdrift, actually I do break in a straight line as I was taught in RL race licence training. Problem is though I still break too hard. Some faqs say break to 50 mph for bend x and go thru the bend, I brake but usually too much, I’m down to 45 mph.
900 degrees, I may give it another shot, who knows.

Ok, ok enough ranting from Grumblebear. :grumpy:

:P Benjii wants to know about my Driving Missions. Here goes.

So I’ve completed whatever I needed to do to please PD and allow me in to Mission Hall. Can’t remember exactly what it was but must have been some serious ass kissing.
(It was a while ago and I don’t want to be reminded of that painful period)

DM 1: Deep Forest and Fiat 500.
I settle in to my 100% adjustable leather armchair, sorry I meant drivers seat, pull the dashboard towards me, adjust the pedals so they feel comfy, put on my racing shoes (=socks) and humbly  ask PD if I may start DM1.

Sure enough, I’m expecting some sort of Skyline test (there are way too many of these in the game) and I see this pitiful Fiat 500 in front of me pulling away, I haven’t reached the Start line yet and my view is in most cases set to steering wheel only, so I have no idea what I’m driving.
(occasionally I use hood view, car view is impossible for me, feels like drunk driving)

I crash in to the barrier with laughter :D as I see the 500 taking off at an incredible speed of 5 mph and have to restart the game after 5 minutes of .
PD, I thought this was a proper racing game. I want my money back.

Seriously now, it takes about 8-10 attempts to actually pass the bug on the inside and then crawl up the hill in 4th gear at a snails pace but I beat him/her to the finish line. YES !!!
A-specs improve by 250.

DM2 Grand Valley Beemer.
No special news to report here, had to restart several times to beat the guy/gall in front of me.

DM3 Cote d’Azur (or Monaco as I know it) in some sort of old Italian rustbucket.
:banghead: AAAARRRGGHH, I hated this test, have run it over and over for ages. Finally I got mad :mischievous: and ploughed in to the bugger at the bottom of the hill.
I was penalised some seconds but made it to the finish line. As soon as I stopped I got out of the car, took the jack out of the boot and casually walked over to the other guy. Turns out he works for PD. I beat the **** out of him.

DM4 Seattle
Nothing adventurous there, but I did need to consult my pace notes to find the correct braking point. (And no they ain’t easy, I have to try these tests at least 10 times if not more)

DM5 High Speed Ring
Nothing adventurous there, 250 Aspecs achieved.

DM6 Tsukuba Mazda MX5 (or Miata in other countries)
I used to own an MX3, never had the 5 though, overpriced by my standards.
I don’t like this PD car at all, behaves like yellowbird, throws out it’s tail. Don’t worry I will try to master these cars later on in PD life.
So fair to say I didn’t particularly like the test but aced this one too eventually.

DM7 Midfield
Same as DM5

DM8 Trail Mountain.
Again a horrible test, :banghead: get the guy in the tunnel, pass him and win. So again I consult my stack of pace notes, it reads: break to 50 or so mph. I do, or at least try to, either I hit him or I’m too fast and end up against the right tunnel wall.
After trying over and over I decide to use tactics in DM3 💡.
It works and another PD employee ends up in the hospital :ill:. I’ll send him a get well card once I feel better again. My car is totaled but it wasn’t mine so I don’t really care anyway.

DM9 TR Motegi
Same as DM5
I like this track.

DM10 Sarthe 3 Renaults Espace to overtake.
Aahh good some drafting to do here so I exit the race, drive over to Albert Hein (=Walmart) and buy a couple of crates of draftbeers and have a few. The rest are to share with the blokes when I beat them.

No worries mate. Get in the car, a reasonable drive and gas it down the straight. All I have to do it get behind every one of them and overtake. Easy peasy.
Anyways a couple of minutes down the straight, cant remember my speed but everything was blurry, I think I’d just overtaken nr 3 and bang crash ambulance sirens wailing, I wake up to find myself in hospital.:ill:
The other blokes send me some get well cards and a decent map of the track.
Scale 1:10. So I study the map and find there are 2 chicanes in the track.:banghead:

The lovely blond nurse , whom I’ve taken a liking to explains to me that drafting and draughting  are 2 different things. Turns out she moonlights as one of those pit pussycats (or whatever the right terminology is)

I finally recover from my injuries and visit the track again, this time I will be the BOB (Dutch acronym for Conscious Non drinking Driver). For those who are curious to learn some Dutch it’s: Bewust Onbeschonken Bestuurder.

I’ll walk the track first to see how these chicanes run and attempt to manouvre around them.
To cut a story short after many, many attempts I finally cheat and drive over them. Another 250 gained.

DM11-20
Tried a few times but no positive results yet. Looking forward to see the Jay Leno tank car.
(No please keep me in suspense, don’t post any pictures)

DM21 Slipstream Nintendo game Cubes.
Or was it Nissan something or other cubes. No problemo senor, ace this on first attempt.
PD buy some decent cars please. Effing panel vans. You must be making a fair amount of money off us drivers.

DM22 Slipstream, Honda something.
No problemo senor, ace this on first attempt. No pace notes needed here.

DM24 Slipstream Amuse 2000
See DM22.

DM23 Slipstream Skylines
Hmmm, can’t quite figure out how to gain distance on nr 1. So back to my pace notes, yep that’s what I did so why am I not truly gaining on this car. I see him but still get beaten by around 1 sec or so.
Back to the Forum, I find a video and watch it 2 times. I’m following the same tactics, roughly.
Then I spot the error, I should stay in 5th gear and play the cat and mouse game with a bit more finesse. On my 6th attempt I catch him. Another 250 Aspecs bagged. And a car.

DM31 High Speed Rig Reverse or was is Hug speed etc
A Lotus, a car I have dreamt of when I was younger, pity they’re quite expensive and you don’t find many left hand drives. Having not learnt from DM23 I follow the Elise in 5th place around and fail miserably. So I consult my pace notes. It says wall ride. What ???, scratch a perfectly good car (a car of my dreams? Oh sob). :scared:
So I swallow, apologise  to the guy who lends me his Esprit, and wall ride. Sure enough I make it after a few attempts. The car is trashed though.

DM remainder
Tried a few times but no positive results yet. Near, oh so near but no acing these yet.
But famous words: “I’ll be back”

Anybody see the female german Racing driver 'beat' Jaykay's record lap of 9.59:59 in a Jag. She was in an Ford transit van and ran a 10:06 lap (RL) on the (UK) Top Gear program.

Great post! Really funny
As for the golds on licenses. You should try watching the demonstration :)
That helped me to get gold 22 times :)

Well, welcome to the world of Gran Turismo, the land of frustrating moments and fun. :D

And wow, you should start writing your own book with the amount you've written. :P It was a very good read and it was quite funny too. Actualy hearing someone elses own opinion on such a large scale is quite amusing. We don't often here at GTP get someone like you writing up such a large report on the game.

Keep up the brilliant work. 👍

Then there’s the Gymkhana track in Driving Range (I don't mean the one in coffee break), what am I supposed to do here. I see some cones laid out in a circle, that's it, yeah now what. Definitely help needed here. (Famine to the rescue ?!)
Okay so I found out now :) . Thanks to 50/50. It's to practice drifting. Oh well that should provide some alternative fun. 👍

AMG_SLK, is mission 31 the one lap at high speed ring reverse? its pretty easy, i got it second time, along with the Skyline mission via the help of people here

So is every bump and camber of the Nurburgring burned into every functioning brain cell yet? I'm assuming you WILL have a period where you race on this track almost exclusively, as soon as you get reasonably good at it...

The Yellowbird has yet to reveal its charms eh? (hint: it needs to be on the nurb going sideways nearly outta control over a crest with you with a facial expression of great stress, like you're trying to do a particularly hard ****... I have done this after 15 beers (the yellowbird on nurb, not the ****...), I got a 20min lap, cause I wanted to get back to hospital to see that hot nurse.;) ) Not to worry, give it time to grow on you... :)
Cars will generally become easier to turn when you're more comfortable with the back end losing a certain amount of traction...:D
I say ignore the 'correct' way to race, and just start throwing cars around (looking where you're going out the side window, naturally) to get a good feel for them.

BTW great post. It confirmed a lot of the same feelings I had when just getting the game ;)
A warm and fuzzy welcome to GTPlanet! (eww sorry thats gross)

Chinko, yes it is, I corrected the ommision. It may be easy for you, but did you read my first post. I'm a old old newbie to this. Old Geezer has a few years on me but I'm catching up on him way too fast.

I've only done a hundred laps or so, different cars. I like it despite the casualties. Thank god for the blond nurse.
Oh and some good news on that front :) , but bad for you guys :ouch: . I'm dating her and liking it a lot. I pretend I'm hurt after a race and she dotes on me. :)

Fair Dinkum, one day, but not now, I will let you know how I get on with this car.

Btw I love Melbourne, any chance of getting some vegimite and a VB or 2.

I still plan to retire in Down Under, love the place.

AMG_SLK - Welcome to the game!

And thanks for the most amusing thread I've read since I joined - I know my profile says total noob, but I switched usernames due to a character length limit...still only signed on about a week or so ago, but I've been read a LOT (on a number of sites) and nothing I've read so far has been that entertaining.

I've been racing with a DS2 for a loooong time and finally just got myself a wheel, I'm almost sorry you'll miss the feeling of 'upgrading'...

I wonder if there's a thread somewhere for us geezers that are over 30 (I just turned 36...) - bet at least 1/2 the players/posters are that old...

I suppose this would be how we handle our MR Crisis? ;)

I think the average age would be around 20, there's not thousands of 30+ year olds on here but theres a few who can teach the young un's a lesson or two in Gran Turismo. Check out the rumble strip for a thread like that there might be one hidden away.

There is every chance of getting some vegemite and a few VBs if you really want them.:D Just steal any Aussie's overnight bag (sportsman/tourist/grandma - any Aussie) and it will contain both. Good work on knowing we don't drink Fosters!

Its a cold day so I'm off to the Belgian beer garden thats just a block up the road from me now, I've finally worked out whats good! Tripel Karmeliet (spelling?!) is my favorite beer (kwak is my second fav), until I have something better of course. Its like drinking a steak with the viscousity of honey... Mmmmmm.

Anyway....

I would really like to know how you go with the Yella-bird, its a real love it or hate it car...
:)

T

Zonekill K2racer - RGB cable, alas no TV input for that (scart only) and S-Video installed early June. Maybe I need to sit closer to the TV.

What do you mean?, you dont have a SCART input on your TV??
