The regular season is over. Playoff teams are gearing up for postseason play while the non-playoff teams will try to figure out what's next and how to improve for next season. If you're welcome to assess your team(s) at this point, feel free to do so. Here is my Texans' assessment...
I have used the analogies of "blown engine," "leaking oil," and even "blown tires." How else can you describe a season where so much is expected of you, yet you fail on almost every fathomable level? That describes the 2013 Houston Texans with their 2-14 record. Many locals (myself excluded) felt this was the year the Texans will just waltz their way into the Super Bowl. But before you can make the Super Bowl, you must first make the playoffs, and we (obviously) didn't do that this season. Those Super Bowl hopes were true for... only two games. I figured we'd lose at Baltimore. However, I wasn't expecting the team to constantly lose game after game. There were plenty of games I thought we should have won- vs. Seattle, vs. Indianapolis, vs. St. Louis, maybe even at Kansas City. Many games for the Texans were decided by 10 or fewer points during this losing streak.
When Matt Schaub had that string of interceptions returned for touchdowns (pick-sixes), it was basically time for change. Enter Case Keenum. He could do nothing to reverse Houston's losing ways, but he certainly provided looseness and versatility. I'd say he was a damn good QB despite not winning any games. The most frightening moment this season was when Gary Kubiak collapsed around Halftime of the Sunday Night game vs. Indianapolis. Kubiak would later be fired once the losing streak hit 11 games. Wade Phillips would take over as interim coach.
All in all, the 2013 Houston Texans are a talented team that found failure and ways to fail to lead to a 2-14 record. We were 2-14 back in 2005. This 2-14 really feels bad because the talent was so much better in 2013 compared to that woeful 2005 season. Trouble just seemed to find the Texans often this season. I felt this season was more like a curse rather than a talented team simply not producing. It isn't like the 2013 Texans are still the expansion Texans- these are boys who became men starting with the 2011 season. I like this team moving forward. Sadly, the record- and even the effort in certain games this past season, doesn't show positive progress.
It's the worst Texans season ever in my view. This is a worse 2-14 than the 2-14 in 2005. There is promise things will get turned around. But... we'll be back to watching the playoffs rather than being in them. Those are the sad state of affairs for Houston's NFL team. How about yours? Congratulations to all teams who made the playoffs.
