Stanley Cup Champions for Pittsburgh or one more day for San José? The answer is... one more day. The Sharks won 4-2 when Pittsburgh Penguin fans were all outside like it was New Year's Eve. Unfortunately, that would-be championship celebration will have to wait. Them Sharkies will bring the series back to San José. It was the first period that was the offensive explosion. Sharks scored two goals early before Pittsburgh QUICKLY scored two goals within 22 seconds. Another goal was cashed in by San José to end the period. Then add an Empty Net goal late in the game, and the Sharks took down the Penguins.

So get ready for Game 6 in San José this Sunday night. The Sharks have to win again for this series to go the seven-game distance.

RIP Mr. Hockey.
Gordi Howe passed away today at the age of 88.
Considered to be one of the best to ever lace skates up.
A legend. A hero. A great man.

God must be stacking his fantasy draft this week. 2 incredible humans pass through his gates.

I hear tomorrow that "Doc" Emrick will have his own look at the life and times of Gordie Howe during tomorrow's broadcast of the Penguins at Sharks game. You know that is going to be must-see TV. I'm sure there will be at least some kind of tribute to Gordie Howe tomorrow night.

I was looking around the NHL's Facebook fan page. There were so many touching comments looking back on Gordie Howe. Just about a majority of the comments were along the lines of "he was a kind and great guy, not to mention an excellent hockey player." Still sad Gordie Howe's no longer with us. His spirit and his insight will surely live on.

Let me share this video with you all. If you haven't visited the Detroit Red Wings' YouTube channel, check this out:

Touching tribute, to say the least.

Will the 2015-2016 season end tonight? It will if the San José Sharks fail to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight in the Shark Tank. Penguins at Sharks. Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. PIT leads series 3-2. Will we have Pittsburgh hoist the Stanley Cup, or will we see the Sharks' season last one more day?

Enjoy tonight's action!

After sixty minutes of play in San José, the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the San José Sharks 3-1. This victory gives the Penguins a 4-2 series win. And more importantly- they are your 2015-2016 champions. Lord Stanley's Cup goes to the Steelers for the fourth time in their history. San José made it interesting, but couldn't do enough to suppress the Pens. So San José will have to try again next season to have another chance to play for the Stanley Cup. And look- everyone's favorite... Gary Bettman!

Had the Sharks won tonight, Game 7 would have been on Wednesday in Pittsburgh.

And so ends another season of NHL hockey. All congratulations to Pittsburgh, but also full credit to the San José Sharks. Raise the beautiful Stanley Cup high into the air to show the world. One last thing... check your rear view mirrors, Pittsburgh- 29 other NHL teams want to take your spot next season. You know- the Stars, the Bruins, the Canadiens, the Wild, the Blues, the Flyers, the Kings... same old same old. Consider yourselves warned, Pittsburgh.

Well, they did it!

Something feels so satisfying after watching every second of the playoffs, and hopefully next year is just as great.
Heck yeah! The Pens bring Lord Stanley's Cup back to Pittsburgh!
Whether they did it tonight - or game seven, I am glad they got it. The Pens fought pretty hard to get this far.

Pens and Caps was one of the best series I have ever watched. It was back and forth, and even straight-forward sometimes. Tight, but heavy checking. Incredible goal scoring.

Tonight. It all paid off.

For the Sharks, a great run they have had, no doubt. Did they deserve the Cup? Sure. Any team that goes this far deserves the Cup. However, I feel like they only had one obstacle. The L.A. Kings. And then a half-sized obstacle, the Predators.

All together, great job to both teams. And the Sharks fans are rude as hell. Don't be booing the while time during the presentation of the Stanley 🤬 Cup. [/Rant]

The Pens' no name D have done it again, limited the Sharks just two shots in the 3rd period, it was a total domination.

A lot of people probably don't agree with writers decision to give Sid the Conn Smythe but I think he truly deserves the trophy.

I think the move to Pittsburgh reinvigorated Phil Kessel because he doesn't have to be "the guy" like he was in Toronto. The guy deserved to have a cup with how talented he is, and he finally got one.

:grumpy:

Now I'm gonna have to deal with the insufferable Pens fans again....
Try living here, surrounded by people that only support a team when it's winning. So congrats to the ones that stuck by a team when it was drawing 12k, you have earned the right to be a bit insufferable.

Mike Yeo is joining the Blues as an assistant coach for Hitchcocks last year next season, and he's taking over the Head coaching job the season after. Kind of surprising they announced it this far out.

He will at least get the benefit of having an extra year with the players. The players knowing that should also help the transition to Yeo since they already will know their coach once it is his time.

Steve Simmons? He praised Kessel and said the Leafs need a leader like him to lead their young squad in his latest column. LOL Typical Toronto media, they make me sick.

Let met share a few news notes in the NHL...

* It is being said that the expansion deal in the NHL is going to be rewarded to Las Vegas. I think I read there is a $500M USD fee for an expansion team to be in Las Vegas. It may be possible the team may play at the new T-Mobile Arena or maybe someplace else. This is much more of a fee than when the Columbus Blue Jackets expanded, which was about $80M USD at its time. Here is a post on Yahoo! Sports regarding this: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ap-source-nhl-settles-las-vegas-expansion-163652886--nhl.html

* The Anaheim Ducks have re-hired Randy Carlyle as their head coach.

* When I found that video on Gordie Howe posted earlier in this page, I saw some interesting comments. Someone noted that if the current arena in Detroit is Joe Louis Arena, the new arena should be called Gordie Howe Arena. And you know what? I actually think that would be a very cool idea. I'm just unsure as to what our resident Red Wings fans here on GTP would think of naming the new arena Gordie Howe Arena.

* Finally, I want to offer my best wishes to Dave Strader, play-by-play commentator of Sanji Himura's Dallas Stars- who was recently diagnosed with cancer. Hope he'll be able to fight through it.

I just wanted to share these news bits while folks in Pittsburgh are probably still partying hard over winning the Stanley Cup.

[UPDATE] If the expansion Las Vegas team get the funds, the team's first season will be in the 2017-2018 season.

Had the Sharks won on Sunday, tonight would have been Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals in Pittsburgh. So for this post, I will allow you all to discuss some of the best and worst moments of the 2015-2016 season of NHL hockey. I invite all of you to discuss some of the different moments of this season. Maybe talk about what you are looking forward to for next season for your favorite teams and players.

Here are a few musings of mine to take a look back at this season...

* Maybe the thing I think of most is how the Montreal Canadiens had an absolutely ballin' start... only to fall apart like a badly built car.

* Let's go from one Original Six team to another- AnthonyD1993 and Joey D's Detroit Red Wings. Despite adversity, the Detroit Red Wings still managed to make the playoffs for the 25th successive season. They had a real physical series against Tampa Bay ranging from hostility to bloodied faces. Making the postseason 26 straight seasons is going to be tough once the 2016-2017 season rolls around. I think their coach moved on to the University of Wisconsin. So if you fancy Big Ten hockey, I'd surely want to see how the Wisconsin/Michigan rivalry shapes up in hockey.

* Keeping up the Original Six talk, Boston wished they could have done more to help their playoff cause. Unfortunately, they didn't make the postseason.

* I do think the New York Rangers had a great season and a talented lineup. Could they possibly do more to maybe go further into the postseason than they did this past season?

* RedDragon and Northstar's Minnesota Wild had an up-and-down season. Mike Yeo got canned as coach, and yet the Wild still managed to make the playoffs. Maybe with more star players, they probably could have stood a better chance against the Dallas Stars in their first-round match. They still did quite well playing on house money. The future seems bright for Minnesota. All I wonder is if the Wild can parlay that into a deep playoff run next season or some season in the near future.

* I am thinking if the Philadelphia Flyers are going to be any future threat, Shayne Gostisbehere will have to be that next-level player. And you know nothing hurts than seeing an in-state or near-state rival win the championship. So you bet the Flyers will want to give the Penguins something to think about for next season.

* Ken Hitchcock will coach one more season as he's currently with the St. Louis Blues. In a stacked division like the Central Division, the question will be on kolio's Blues can still deliver and maybe improve upon this past season. St. Louis missed out on the Stanley Cup Finals after a wild series with the San José Sharks.

* What was most shocking to me was how not one single Canadian team made the postseason. This was the first time in a few decades that no Canadian teams qualified for the postseason. The last Canadian team to win the Stanley Cup was the 1992-1993 Montreal Canadiens.

* Both Florida teams did quite well this past season. The Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning both had fine seasons. Both have had to deal with the New York Islanders in the postseason. Omnis' Miami Dolphins were defeated by the Islanders in the first round. However, the Islanders couldn't beat the other Florida NHL team in the second round.

* How far did you have the Washington Capitals advancing? This was a great team that was not great enough to (seemingly) waltz their way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Alex Ovechkin was still money in the bank for the Capitals.

* In the 2014-2015 season, it was the Chicago Blackhawks that won it all. This past season, they were knocked out early. The big factor was mostly about stuff like Patrick Kane's issues off the ice. At least this incident wasn't as bothersome as (to use another sport)- D. Rose of the NBA's Chicago Bulls. Still, you can't fault the Blackhawks' Batman and Robin tandem of Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.

* All congratulations to the Pittsburgh Penguins on winning Lord Stanley's Cup and hoisting it high for the world to see.

* Finally, and most of all... I'd be remiss if I failed to recognize the lives we've lost in hockey this past season. Certainly remember lives like Ed Snider and of course- "Mr. Hockey" Gordie Howe among many others whom we've lost this season.

That was a pretty big start. What are some of your memories of this past season? How would you look back on this past season? What are some of your thoughts about next season? The floor is yours!

The Redwings are expected to announce tomorrow that Pavel Datsyuk won't be returning next season, to the wings or any team in the NHL. He's going to finish his playing career with his family in Russia. He was a stud.

Pavel Datsyuk was quite the player. He provided great service for the Detroit Red Wings. Best of luck to him in Russia.

Yeah, good luck with Yeo as your coach @kolio your younger players will hardly get any ice time and if they make 1 mistake will be replaced by an older player who is worse than them

Isn't the draft on Friday?

Breaking News: Frederick Anderson goes to the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 30th overall pick this year and a 2nd round next year.

What's everyone's take on this? I feel like the Ducks should have gotten more from this deal. At least a 3rd as well if not more

Edit: I know it's a game, but this has to be one of my proudest moments. A 99 overall John Scott

Yep, Patrick. I still think Seattle should have gotten an expansion team, but congratulations to Las Vegas. I guess their would-be rivals regionally would be the Arizona Coyotes or maybe even the Anaheim Ducks. Then again, there is a certain ring to it to have a cool hockey team in the heat of Las Vegas.

So you folks in the Western Conference will have one more team to deal with when the Las Vegas (nickname/nicknames) begin play.
